Description: Seismic models of global-scale lateral heterogeneity in the mantle show systematic differences below continents and oceans that are too large to be purely thermal in origin. An inversion of the geoid, based on a seismic model that includes viscous flow in the mantle, indicates that the differences beneath continents and oceans can be accounted for by differences in composition in the upper mantle superposed on mantle-wide thermal heterogeneities. The net continent-ocean density differences, integrated over depth, are small and cause only a low flux of mass and heat across the asthenosphere and mantle transition zone.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Forte, A M -- Dziewonski, A M -- O'connell, R J -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1995 Apr 21;268(5209):386-8.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17746544" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: The time dependence of the orientation of Earth's inner core relative to the mantle was determined using a recently discovered 10-degree tilt in the axis of symmetry of the inner core's seismic-velocity anisotropy. Two methods of analyzing travel-time variations for rays traversing the inner core, on the basis of 29 years of data from the International Seismological Centre (1964-1992), reveal that the inner core appears to rotate about 3 degrees per year faster than the mantle. An anomalous variation in inner-core orientation from 1969 to 1973 coincides in time with a sudden change ("jerk") in the geomagnetic field.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Su -- Dziewonski -- Jeanloz -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1996 Dec 13;274(5294):1883-7.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉W.-J. Description: The three-dimensional maps of the earth's interior now span regions from the bottom of the crust to the inner core of the earth. Although a wealth of new information on the dynamics of the earth has been discovered, the inner core offers the greatest surprise: it appears to be anisotropic with the axis of symmetry aligned with the axis of rotation.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Dziewonski, A M -- Woodhouse, J H -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1987 Apr 3;236(4797):37-48.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17759204" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Notes: [Auszug] Superposition of the polar shifts computed for 234 large earthquakes (Ms ≥ 7.8) that occurred between the years 1901 and 1970 yields a synthetic curve that closely resembles the observed pattern of variations of the Chandler wobble during the same period. We conclude that earthquakes ...

Magnitudes are overestimated for most of the continental earthquakes, underestimated for mid-oceanic ridges and differences of ...
