Notes: Abstract  Low loss, tunable dielectric materials are important for phased array antenna and other device applications. Various composites of barium strontium titanium oxide (BSTO) combined with other nonelectrically active oxide ceramics have been formulated for such uses. The dielectric constant and the loss tangents of these composites have been reduced to enhance the overall impedance matching and thereby lowering the overall insertion loss of the device. The material has been fabricated in bulk ceramic, thick film, and thin film form to address a broad range of frequency applications. The material fabrication methods and the electronic properties of these composites will be discussed in this article.

Notes: Abstract The unsteady viscous incompressible flow around a circular cylinder is studied numerically for high Reynolds number. The two dimensional Navier-Stokes equation in stream function-vorticity formulation is solved. A fractional step method is used to solve the stream function equation while the vorticity transport equation is solved using a third order upwinding scheme. The computed solutions by the finite difference method agree reasonably well with the available experimental and other computational results at a Reynolds number of 9500 and 4500. These comparisons are for the initial stages of flow evolution when the wake bubble is symmetric.

Notes: Abstract Two procedures for estimating initial states of a production line that ensure the line has a high probability of meeting the specified production target during a scheduled production shift are presented. The problem of determining desirable initial states is important in low variety, high volume production systems such as those from the automobile industry. One procedure is derived from design of experiments (DOE) theory whereas the other uses a genetic algorithm (GA). In the study it was determined that both procedures are straightforward to implement and produce good solutions to the problem. The results from the procedures are compared and their benefits and disadvantages are discussed.

Notes: Summary An exact axisymmetric piezothermoelastic solution is presented for a simply-supported hybrid cylindrical shell made of cross-ply composite laminate and piezoelectric layers. Numerical results for hybrid shells are presented for sinusoidal and central band thermal and electrical loads. The effect of the loading, the radius-to-thickness ratio, the span-to-radius ratio and the number of layers of the substrate on the response is investigated. The interface between the substrate and the actuated piezoelectric layer has been found to be subjected to high shear stress. It has been shown that the maximum values of the deflection and the stresses, due to thermal load, can be appreciably reduced by appropriate application of actuation potential.

Notes: Summary Three-dimensional axisymmetric solution is presented for a simply supported piezoelectric cylindrical shell. The variables are expanded in Fourier series to satisfy the boundary conditions at the ends. The solution of the governing differential equations with variable coefficients is constructed as a product of an exponential function and a power series. The coefficients of terms of all degrees in the governing equations are set to zero, yielding a characteristic equation for the exponent and recursive relations for the coefficients of the power series. Results are presented illustrating the effect of thickness parameter of the shell. An inverse problem of inferring the applied temperature from the measured potential difference has been solved.

Notes: Abstract Powders of lead zirconate titanate (PZT) are prepared by coating a PbO powder with very fine particles containing titanium and zirconium derived from an alkoxide sol. The size of the particles in the coating increases from 10 nm to 100 nm with the increase in the pH during preparation from 3 to 10.5. The powders calcine at low temperature (≃ 600 °C) to single-phase PZT without the formation of any intermediate phase. The tetragonal and rhombohedral phases are found to coexist betweenx = 0.535 and 0.545. Careful calcination of the powders is needed to ensure removal of residual organics; otherwise the residual carbon reduces PbO to metallic lead leading to high currents during poling. Loss of lead on sintering is significantly lower (1.4 wt%) as compared to samples from conventional powders (6.4 wt%). Successful poling of the sintered samples is achieved when the powders are prepared without using sol stabilizers and are calcined without pelletizing. Washing of the powders is not helpful, perhaps because it leads to change in stoichiometry due to loss of material. A dielectric constant of 950 andd 33 〉 190 pCN−1 are easily achieved.

Notes: Abstract In accordance with high incidence of AIDS cases, there is an epidemic growth of its literature. This unprecedented growth of literature calls for serious scientometric study. Such a study will not only help the scientometrists, information scientists, but also will be very useful to the related research workers. With this in view an attempt has been made to analyse AIDS literature published during the period 1976–1986 to identify its international channel of communication, medium of communication, contributing countries, authorship trends etc. This study is based on data printed in a source document entitledCollected Papers on AIDS Research, 1976–1986 published by BIOSIS which is a retrospective bibliography incorporating valuable references to research on AIDS from 9,000 source titles monitored in BIOSIS data base. The findings of this study have also been compared to those ofWyatt andSelf, Filardo andLancaster.
