    Notes: Abstract We studied patterns of chick growth and mortality in relation to egg size and hatching asynchrony during two breeding seasons (1991 and 1992) in a colony of chinstrap penguins sited in the Vapour Col rookery, Deception Island, South Shetlands. Intraclutch variability in egg size was slight and not related to chick asymmetry at hatching. Hatching was asynchronous in 78% (1991) and 69% (1992) of the clutches, asynchrony ranging from 1 to 4 days (on average 0.9 in 1991 and 1.0 days in 1992). Chicks resulting from oneegg clutches grew better than chicks in families of two in 1991. In 1992, single chicks grew to the same size and mass at 46 days of age as chicks of broods of two, suggesting food limitation in 1991 but not in 1992. In 1991, asymmetry between siblings in mass and flipper length was significantly greater in asynchronous than in synchronous families during the initial guard stage, but these differences disappeared during the later créche phase. In 1992, asymmetry in body mass increased with hatching asynchrony and decreased with age. Only the effect of age was significant for flipper length and culmen. Asymmetries at 15 days were similar in both years, but significantly lower in 1992 than in 1991 at 46 days of age. There were relatively frequent reversals of size hierarchies during both phases of chick growth in the two years, reversals being more common in 1991 than in 1992 for small chicks. In 1991, survivors of brood reduction grew significantly worse than chicks in nonreduced broods. In both years, chicks of synchronous broods attained similarly large sizes before fledging as both A and B chicks of asynchronous broods. In 1991, chick mortality rate increased during the guard stage due to parental desertions, decreased during the transition to crèches (occurs at a mean age of 29 days) and returned to high constant levels during the crèche stage, when it is mostly due to starvation (in total 66% of hatched chicks survived to fledging). In contrast, in 1992, mortality was relatively high immediately after hatching and almost absent for chicks older than 3 weeks (87% of chicks survived to fledging). Mortality affected similarly one- and two-chick families. In 1991, asynchronous families suffered a significantly greater probability of brood reduction than synchronous families, but this probability was not significantly related to degree of asymmetry between siblings. No association between asynchrony and mortality was found in 1992. These results show that there is food limitation in this population during the crèche phase in some years, that asynchronous hatching does not facilitate early brood reduction and that it does not ensure stable size hierarchies between siblings. Brood reduction due to starvation is not associated to prior asymmetry and does not facilitate the survival or improve the growth of the surviving chick. Asynchronous hatching may be a consequence of thermal constraints on embryo development inducing incubation of eggs as soon as they are laid.

    Notes: Abstract Antibiotics can disturb the production of biogas during anaerobic digestion. This study shows a systematic approach to understanding how the different bacterial populations involved in the final conversion of organic matter into methane are inhibited by 15 antimicrobial agents with different specificities and modes of action. The results obtained show the following trends: (i) some inhibitors, such as the macrolide erythromycin, lack any inhibitory effect on biogas production; (ii) some antibiotics, with different specificities, have partial inhibitory effects on anaerobic digestion and decrease methane production by interfering with the activity of propionic-acid- and butyric-acid-degrading bacteria,␣(e.g. antibiotics that interfere with cell wall synthesis, RNA polymerase activity and protein synthesis, especially the aminoglycosides); (iii) the protein synthesis inhibitors chlortetracycline (IC50 40 mg l−1) and chloramphenicol (IC50 15–20 mg l−1) are very powerful inhibitors of anaerobic digestion. The majority of the antibiotics tested lacked activity against acetoclastic methanogens, being active only on the acetogenic bacteria. However, chloramphenicol and chlortetracycline could cause the complete inhibition of the acetoclastic methanogenic archaea.

    Notes: Abstract The toxicity of chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons on acetoclastic methanogens in anaerobic granular sludge was determined using a standardized anaerobic bioassay method. Most of the chloroaliphatics tested were strong inhibitors of methanogenesis. Tri- and tetrachloride derivatives of methane and ethane were the most highly toxic compounds tested, with concentrations of less than 18 mg/l resulting in 50% inhibition (IC50) of the methanogenic activity. Dichlorinated compounds were less toxic, with IC50 values ranging from 40 mg/l to 100 mg/l. On the other hand, perchlorinated derivatives of ethane and ethene were scarcely inhibitory at concentrations near their maximum water solubility. The toxicity caused by chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons was reversible. The comparison of structurally related compounds indicated that unsaturated chloroaliphatics were less toxic than their saturated counterparts. A reverse correlation between the electric dipole moment of these compounds and their methanogenic toxicity is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract We performed a food provisioning experiment in a population of Pied Flycatchers Ficedula hypoleuca breeding at high altitude in central Spain to test if food availability before and during laying determines clutch size. Food was provided to one of two pairs with the same date of initiation of nest-building (15 dyads of subsequently reproducing pairs were thus created). Food provisioning began on the day of initiation of nest-building and ended on the day after the last egg was laid. Although laying date was unaffected by the experiment, clutch size in the experimental treatment was significantly larger. This result could indicate that food availability at laying (1) proximately constrained clutch size or (2) that females evaluated future conditions for incubating eggs and feeding nestlings based on food availability at laying. Reproductive success (proportion of eggs that resulted in fledged young) was significantly reduced in the experimental treatment. This effect suggest that supplemented females were tricked by the experiment into laying more eggs than the number of eggs they were able to incubate with success and the number of nestlings they were able to feed, a source of error in clutch size adjustment which could be common in non-experimental situations.

    Notes: Abstract The polarized Raman spectra of four different beryl crystals were studied at room temperature in the range from 30 to 4000 cm-1. The spectra show significant differences between the samples studied, and corrections are proposed for the reference Raman spectra of beryl previously reported by Adams and Gardner (1974). Type II water is observed in two crystals; the corresponding symmetric Raman stretching band at 3595 cm-1 is extremely strong for an impurity (about 20% of the strongest beryl lattice mode). Another, sharper, band of similar intensity at 3605 cm-1 could possibly originate from a hydroxyl stretching mode. Additional weaker bands are observed around 1600 cm-1 and 3600–3750 cm-1. The first polarized Raman spectra of bazzite are presented and discussed.

    Notes: Abstract The distribution of Fe atoms within the octahedral sheet of a series of trioctahedral micas has been investigated by polarized Fe K-edge EXAFS spectroscopy. Single crystals have been oriented in the X-ray beam with the layer plane at 35° with respect to the electric field vector. At this “magic angle”, contributions to the EXAFS spectrum of nearest cation shells are equal to those recorded on a completely disoriented powder. The average number of Fe and Mg cations surrounding each Fe atom has been determined and compared with those deduced from NMR spectra. It is shown that the distribution of Fe atoms is not random, the deviation from this distribution depending on the fluorine content. The agreement between these independent results proves the reliability of the structural information deduced from EXAFS and NMR spectra as well as the usefulness of these two methods in analyzing the local distribution of cations in minerals.

    Notes: Abstract The 29Si and 27Al nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis of synthetic trioctahedral phyllosilicates 2:1, with tetrahedral ratios Al T/(Si + Al T) ranging from 0 to 0.5, has shown that the ditrigonal distortion of tetrahedral rings (angle α) is the main factor controlling chemical shift values of tetrahedral components in both signals. The increase of ditrigonal rotation angle shifts these components towards more positive values. For each sample, the composition of tetrahedral and octahedral sheets determine the value of α, and from this parameter, the mean tetrahedral Tot angle and the chemical shift values of components are deduced. For a given environment, variations on ditrigonal angle are responsibles for the observed evolution of chemical shift values with bulk composition. The comparative analysis of micas and saponite samples has demonstrated that the location of compensating charge (interlayer and octahedral sheet) does not affect chemical shift values.

    Notes: Abstract  Barley microspore-derived doubled-haploid embryos have been produced in vitro. The development of embryo desiccation technology will allow long-term storage, germplasm preservation and low delivery cost. Treatment of the microspore-derived embryos was essential to induce desiccation tolerance and to arrest further development and plant regeneration. At the concentrations used, a treatment with trehalose was more efficient than with sucrose, and mannitol was harmful to the embryos. Up to 80% of the desiccated embryos produced complete green plants when transferred to regeneration medium, by the application of a 0.6 m trehalose or a 10–5 m abscisic acid treatment to the embryos in the culture induction medium. The morphology of these plants was similar to plants produced directly from non-desiccated embryos.

    Notes: Abstract The thermal behaviour of bovine-brain myelin membrane has been studied by high-sensitivity differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and thermal gel analysis. Spectroscopic results indicate that protein transitions take place between 60°C and 90°C, while thermal gel analysis has provided the thermal denaturation profiles of myelin proteolipid, DM-20 protein and the Wolfgram Fraction. An irreversible calorimetric transition centred at 80.3 ± 0.2°C with a specific enthalpy of 4.7 ± 0.6 J/g of total protein has been assigned to the thermal denaturation of myelin proteolipid and DM-20 protein. The effects of the myelin storage conditions, scan rate, ionic strength and pH on this calorimetric transition have also been investigated. The thermal transition of the proteolipid practically disappears after treatment of the myelin with different amounts of chloroform-methanol 2:1 (v/v), a treatment which is generally used in proteolipid purification. On the other hand, the addition of several detergents to myelin only causes minor modifications to this transition, which then occurs at about 70°C, with a specific enthalpy of between 2.5 and 3.6 J/g of total protein. These results appear to show that detergents preserve the native conformation of the proteolipid far more than do organic solvents. Hence the use of detergents would seem to be the appropriate method for proteolipid purification.
