    Notizen: Abstract Ammonia volatilization associated with urea hydrolysis has been shown to be primarily associated with the pH of the soil solution and its buffering ability in the immediate zone of the fertilizer granule. Numerous studies have also shown that these losses can be reduced significantly by the addition of large amounts of KCl with the urea. Because the pH of commercial sources of potash ranges from 6.5 to 9.5, investigations were conducted to determine if the high pH of these K sources had an effect on the ammonia lost from three contrasting soils. Despite large ammonia losses (approximately 50% of N applied) and a significant reduction in loss due to the use of KCl (30%-50% reduction), the experiments showed no effect of potash pH on ammonia loss. It may be concluded that no risk of enhanced ammonia loss can be associated with the use of high-pH potash sources.

    Notizen: Abstract We analyzed 689 high-resolution magnetograms taken daily with the NSO Vacuum Telescope on Kitt Peak from 1975 to 1991. Motions in longitude on the solar surface are determined by a one-dimensional crosscorrelation analysis of consecutive day pairs. The main sidereal rotation rate of small magnetic features is best fit byω = 2.913(±0.004) − 0.405(±0.027) sin2 φ − 0.422(±0.030) sin4 φ, in µrad s−1, whereφ is the latitude. Small features and the large-scale field pattern show the same general cycle dependence; both show a torsional oscillation pattern. Alternating bands of faster and slower rotation travel from higher latitudes toward the equator during the solar cycle in such a way that the faster bands reach the equator at cycle minimum. For the magnetic field pattern, the slower bands coincide with larger widths of the crosscorrelations (corresponding to larger features) and also with zones of enhanced magnetic flux. Active regions thus rotate slower than small magnetic features. This magnetic torsional oscillation resembles the pattern derived from Doppler measurements, but its velocities are larger by a factor of more than 1.5, it lies closer to the equator, and it leads the Doppler pattern by about two years. These differences could be due to different depths at which the different torsional oscillation indicators are rooted.

    Notizen: Abstract We study the covariance of longitudinal and latitudinal motions of small magnetic features after subtracting long-term averages of differential rotation and meridional flow. The covariance is generally interpreted as Reynolds stress and linked to the equatorward transport of angular momentum. Using high-resolution magnetograms taken daily with the NSO Vacuum Telescope on Kitt Peak, we determine large-scale motions by a two-dimensional crosscorrelation analysis of pairs of consecutive daily observations from which active regions are excluded, i.e., we analyze the motions of small magnetic features. In the present work, we focus on 107 day pairs obtained during the year 1988 and on 472 day pairs taken in selected intervals from 1978 to 1990. We find that all covariance values are very small (below 250 m2 s−2), which is about one to two orders of magnitude smaller than the values from sunspot measurements derived by other authors. At active region latitudes, the masking process increases the noise, which increases the chance that the covariances at these latitudes are not significantly different from zero. We find that the results depend strongly on the temporal averaging involved. Daily unaveraged crosscorrelations lead to no apparent correlation between the residual velocities, while in the monthly averages of the 1988 data, we find a covariance of −37 ± 15 m2 s−2 at 45° with a linear correlation of −0.59, which is significantly different from zero and has the right sign for an equatorial transport of angular momentum. When we average over longer time periods, the covariance values decrease again. The annual averages of the 1978–1990 data show both no significant covariances and the smallest errors. These small covariances imply that the motions of small magnetic features do not reflect the transport of angular momentum via the mechanism of Reynolds stress.

    Notizen: Abstract Two coronal mass ejections have been well observed by the LASCO coronagraphs to move out into the interplanetary medium as disconnected plasmoids. The first, on July 28, 1996, left the Sun above the west limb around 18:00 UT. As it moved out, a bright V-shaped structure was visible in the C2 coronagraph which moved into the field-of-view of C3 and could be observed out to beyond 28 solar radii. The derived average velocity in the plane of the sky was 110 ± 5 km s-1 out to 5 solar radii, and above 15 solar radii the velocity was 269 ± 10 km s-1. Thus there is evidence of some acceleration around 6 solar radii. The second event occurred on November 5, 1996 and left the west limb around 04:00 UT. The event had an average velocity in the plane of the sky of ∼54 km s-1 below 4 R⊙, and it accelerated rapidly around 5 R⊙ up to 310 ± 10 km s-1. In both events the rising plasmoid is connected back to the Sun by a straight, bright ray, which is probably a signature of a neutral sheet. In the November event there is evidence for multiple plasmoid ejections. The acceleration of the plasmoids around a projected altitude of 5 solar radii is probably a manifestation of the source surface of the solar wind.

    Notizen: Abstract We present a qualitative and quantitative comparison of a single coronal mass ejection (CME) as observed by LASCO (July 28–29, 1996) with the results of a three-dimensional axisymmetric time-dependent magnetohydrodynamic model of a flux rope interacting with a helmet streamer. The particular CME considered was selected based on the appearance of a distinct ‘tear-drop’ shape visible in animations generated from both the data and the model. The CME event begins with the brightening of a pre-existing coronal streamer which evolves into a ‘tear-drop’ shaped loop followed by a Y-shaped structure. The brightening moves slowly outward with significant acceleration reaching velocities of ∼450 km s-1 at 30 R⊙. The observed CME characteristics are compared with the model results. On the basis of this comparison, we suggested that the observed features were caused by the evacuation of a flux rope in the closed field region of the helmet streamer (i.e., helmet dome). The flux rope manifests itself as the cavity of the quasi-static helmet streamer and the whole system becomes unstable when the flux rope reaches a threshold strength. The observed ‘tear-drop’ structure is due to the deformed flux rope. The leading edge of the flux rope interacts with the helmet dome to form the typical loop-like CME. The trailing edge of this flux rope interacts with the local bi-polar field to form the observed Y-shaped structure. The model results for the evolution of the magnetic-field configurations, velocity, and polarization brightness are directly compared with observations. Animations have been generated from both the actual data and the model to illustrate the good agreement between the observation and the model. These animations can be found on the CD-ROM which accompanies this volume.

    Notizen: Abstract The Extreme Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT) on board the SOHO spacecraft has been operational since 2 January 1996. EIT observes the Sun over a 45 x 45 arc min field of view in four emission line groups: Feix, x, Fexii, Fexv, and Heii. A post-launch determination of the instrument flatfield, the instrument scattering function, and the instrument aging were necessary for the reduction and analysis of the data. The observed structures and their evolution in each of the four EUV bandpasses are characteristic of the peak emission temperature of the line(s) chosen for that bandpass. Reports on the initial results of a variety of analysis projects demonstrate the range of investigations now underway: EIT provides new observations of the corona in the temperature range of 1 to 2 MK. Temperature studies of the large-scale coronal features extend previous coronagraph work with low-noise temperature maps. Temperatures of radial, extended, plume-like structures in both the polar coronal hole and in a low latitude decaying active region were found to be cooler than the surrounding material. Active region loops were investigated in detail and found to be isothermal for the low loops but hottest at the loop tops for the large loops. Variability of solar EUV structures, as observed in the EIT time sequences, is pervasive and leads to a re-evaluation of the meaning of the term ‘quiet Sun’. Intensity fluctuations in a high cadence sequence of coronal and chromospheric images correspond to a Kolmogorov turbulence spectrum. This can be interpreted in terms of a mixed stochastic or periodic driving of the transition region and the base of the corona. No signature of the photospheric and chromospheric waves is found in spatially averaged power spectra, indicating that these waves do not propagate to the upper atmosphere or are channeled through narrow local magnetic structures covering a small fraction of the solar surface. Polar coronal hole observing campaigns have identified an outflow process with the discovery of transient Fexii jets. Coronal mass ejection observing campaigns have identified the beginning of a CME in an Fexii sequence with a near simultaneous filament eruption (seen in absorption), formation of a coronal void and the initiation of a bright outward-moving shell as well as the coronal manifestation of a ‘Moreton wave’.

    Notizen: Abstract We present the first observations of the initiation of a coronal mass ejection (CME) seen on the disk of the Sun. Observations with the EIT experiment on SOHO show that the CME began in a small volume and was initially associated with slow motions of prominence material and a small brightening at one end of the prominence. Shortly afterward, the prominence was accelerated to about 100 km s-1 and was preceded by a bright loop-like structure, which surrounded an emission void, that traveled out into the corona at a velocity of 200–400 km s-1. These three components, the prominence, the dark void, and the bright loops are typical of CMEs when seen at distance in the corona and here are shown to be present at the earliest stages of the CME. The event was later observed to traverse the LASCO coronagraphs fields of view from 1.1 to 30 R⊙. Of particular interest is the fact that this large-scale event, spanning as much as 70 deg in latitude, originated in a volume with dimensions of roughly 35" (2.5 x 104 km). Further, a disturbance that propagated across the disk and a chain of activity near the limb may also be associated with this event as well as a considerable degree of activity near the west limb.

    Notizen: Abstract The Extreme-ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT) will provide wide-field images of the corona and transition region on the solar disc and up to 1.5 R⊙ above the solar limb. Its normal incidence multilayer-coated optics will select spectral emission lines from Fe IX (171 Å), Fe XII (195 Å), Fe XV (284 Å), and He II (304 Å) to provide sensitive temperature diagnostics in the range from 6 × 104 K to 3 × 106 K. The telescope has a 45 x 45 arcmin field of view and 2.6 arcsec pixels which will provide approximately 5-arcsec spatial resolution. The EIT will probe the coronal plasma on a global scale, as well as the underlying cooler and turbulent atmosphere, providing the basis for comparative analyses with observations from both the ground and other SOHO instruments. This paper presents details of the EIT instrumentation, its performance and operating modes.

    Notizen: Abstract The newly developed C1 coronagraph as part of the Large-Angle Spectroscopic Coronagraph (LASCO) on board the SOHO spacecraft has been operating since January 29, 1996. We present observations obtained in the first three months of operation. The green-line emission corona can be made visible throughout the instrument's full field of view, i.e., from 1.1 R⊙ out to 3.2 R⊙ (measured from Sun center). Quantitative evaluations based on calibrations cannot yet be performed, but some basic signatures show up even now: (1) There are often bright and apparently closed loop systems centered at latitudes of 30° to 45° in both hemispheres. Their helmet-like extensions are bent towards the equatorial plane. Farther out, they merge into one large equatorial ‘streamer sheet’ clearly discernible out to 32 R⊙. (2) At mid latitudes a more diffuse pattern is usually visible, well separated from the high-latitude loops and with very pronounced variability. (3) All high-latitude structures remain stable on time scales of several days, and no signature of transient disruption of high-latitude streamers was observed in these early data. (4) Within the first 4 months of observation, only one single ‘fast’ feature was observed moving outward at a speed of 70 km s-1 close to the equator. Faster events may have escaped attention because of data gaps. (5) The centers of high-latitude loops are usually found at the positions of magnetic neutral lines in photospheric magnetograms. The large-scale streamer structure follows the magnetic pattern fairly precisely. Based on our observations we conclude that the shape and stability of the heliospheric current sheet at solar activity minimum are probably due to high-latitude streamers rather than to the near-equatorial activity belt.

    Notizen: Abstract The Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) Solwind coronagraph recorded the outer corona at elongations 2_5 R⊙ to 10 R⊙ during the 6 1/2-year interval from March 1979, before solar maximum, to the beginning of solar minimum in September 1985. During the minimum period, when the solar magnetic field was dipole-like, the observed corona consisted of the equatorial streamer belt that is characteristic of solar minimum, and that is interpreted as an edgewise view of a nearly flat current sheet or coronal disk lying near the plane of the heliographic equator. The observed disk was a radial projection from the magnetic neutral line that was computed for the 2.5 R⊙ source surface surrounding the Sun. At earlier times, shortly after solar maximum, the observed corona often consisted of a single coronal disk similar to that at solar minimum, but strongly tilted to the heliographic equator. Again this disk projected from a tilted magnetic neutral line that was computed for the 2.5 R⊙ source surface. Solar rotation allowed this coronal disk to be viewed in all aspects. In the edgewise view it appeared as a tilted streamer belt. In the broadside view the more flower-like pattern of solar maximum was observed. The latter view was interpreted as a non-uniform distribution of coronal material in the thin coronal disk. There were many intervals during the declining phase of the solar cycle when the computed magnetic neutral line at 2.5 R⊙ remained relatively simple but was not the source of an observable coronal disk. This latter result was probably because of the limitations of plane-of-sky observations, combined with short-term changes in the corona. Altogether, a single coronal disk, either flat or somewhat convoluted, was recognizable during only one third of the year lifetime of the coronagraph.
