Notes: Three methods of chromosome doubling to produce doubled haploid plants from microspore cultures of Brassica napus were compared: colchicine treatment of microspore-derived plants, microspore-derived embryos, and isolated microspores. In the whole plant treatment, 53% of the treated plants set seed, but the treatment delayed plant growth and reduced seed set. When microspore-derived embryos were treated with colchicine, the doubling frequency was 32% (compared to 15% for spontaneous doubling). Direct colchicine treatment of isolated microspores resulted in a doubling efficiency of 70 % of the whole plants. This treatment also stimulated embryogenesis in microspore culture, leading to increased plant regeneration. Thus, direct chromosome doubling of isolated microspores is efficient and more than 10 000 doubled haploid plants have been produced in this manner in the past three years in order to accelerate the plant-breeding process.

Notes: A viral disease of broad bean (Vicia faba) was observed in Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Sichuan Province, the People's Republic of China. Its typical symptom on infected leaves was a white mottle, and, rarely, red necrotic lesions on several broad bean cultivars. A non-aphid-transmissible strain of turnip mosaic virus (TuMV) was identified as the causal agent of the disease on the basis of biological properties, particle morphology, seed and aphid transmission and serological tests. The virus could not be transmitted by aphids in the non-persistent manner.

Notes: Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers were generated from 20 wheat, Triticum aestivum lines. Fifty-four fragments generated by six primers of a 10-mer arbitrary sequence were used to study their potential power in differentiating parents with different characteristics and predicting the yield performance of hybrids produced from these parents. Experimental results showed that the 20 wheat lines were divided into four groups. Group I was characterized by more grains per spike, group II by heavy grains and group III by more spikes per unit area and short plants; group IV was similar to group III but had a much higher biomass yield and grain yield. Hybrids from parents in different groups were generally superior to most hybrids from parents in the same group. Both yield performance and heterosis of hybrids from parents between group I and group III were much better than those of other intergroup hybrids. These results suggest that, based on RAPD markers, it is possible to differentiate wheat lines with different performances and that the classification of parents from these markers is of predictive value for developing superior hybrids. However, genetic distance (GD) based on RAPD markers was not significantly correlated with hybrid performance and heterosis. It appears to be impossible to predict hybrid performance from GD itself.

Notes: Hybrids of wheat (Triticum durum) × rye (Secale montanum) (2n = 21) were treated with a 0.06 % solution of colchicine. In the induction of fertile plants, fertile spikes, and seed-set per spike, the root immersion technique was 21.7 %, 14.1 %, and 4.4 % respectively more effective than the use of the inverted vial. Colchicine solutions ranging in pH from 3.5 to 7.5 with the root immersion technique reached the highest frequencies of fertile (or partially fertile) hybrids (77.7 %), and fertile spikes (68.9 %) at a pH 5.5 used for the treatment, although the highest overall percentage of large Q seeds resulted from treatments at low pH (3.5). The overall mean frequency of induced fertile plants was six-fold higher when treated in a growth chamber (19/15 °C day/night temperature and 18 h photoperiod) compared to treatments conducted in a greenhouse. The frequency of euploidy (2n = 42) was found to be highest in the large seed class and lowest, i.e. just about 50 %, in the class of small seeds.

Notes: Powdery mildew is an important disease in most of the wheat production areas of the world. The resistance gene Pm21 (6AL/6VS trans-location) derived from Haynaldia villosa confers resistance to all available isolates of Erysiphe (Blumeria) graminis f. sp. tritici in China and Europe. The objective of this study was to develop fast and reliable sequence characterized amplified region (SCAR) markers linked to the Pm21 gene. A random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) marker for Pm21, OPH171400, was converted to SCAR markers after sequencing the two ends of the polymorphic DNA fragment. Two SCAR markers, SCAR1265 and SCAR1400, were developed to detect the Pm21 gene in different genetic backgrounds. The specific SCAR1265 marker enable large-scale accurate screening for the presence/absence of Pm21 allele.

Notes: Plant regeneration was attempted in callus induced from the immature abnormal hybrid embryos between T. durum and S. cereale, using 4-Huorophenoxyacetic acid as a growth regulator. In particular, the relationship of numerical variation in chromosomes between the callus tissues and the regenerated plants was investigated. Cytological observation revealed that there was no distinctive numerical difference between the shoot-forming (SF) and the non-shoot-forming calluses and also between the SF calluses and the regenerated plants. The root-tips of regenerated plants consisted of cells having various chromosome numbers, including the expected 2 n = 3 ×= 21 (genomes, ABR) of which the frequency was 69.8 %. The regenerated plants showed partial fertility, notwithstanding that the hybrid plants were expected to be sterile. Since the frequency of abnormal embryos was about 90 % in this cross, the utilization of abnormal embryos was demonstrated by use of callus culture.

Notes: Different wheat genotypes were treated with gamma-rays, sodium azide (SA) and EMS before tissue culture and immature embryos from M1 plants or plants shortly after exposure to gamma-rays were used to initiate callus culture. Thousands of plants were regenerated and used to investigate the effect of mutagenic treatments on the regenerated plants and somaclonal variation in the M3R2 and M2R2 generations. The results showed that mutagen-induced damage in terms of reduction in plant height, fertility and spike length were not outstanding in the regenerated plants as compared with the untreated control. In the M3R2 generation, only SA treatment had significantly higher frequencies of somaclonal variations than the control. Increases in the variation frequencies were observed when explant embryos were irradiated with 2.5 and 5 gy gamma-rays and the highest frequency appeared when embryos were exposed to 5 gy gamma-rays on the 5th day after anthesis. Increased variation spectra also resulted from mutagenic treatments and most of the variants recovered were unsuitable for plant improvement.

Notes: Palaeomagnetic analysis of 11 diamond-drill cores from the Late Devonian Brewer Conglomerate in the northeastern part of the Amadeus Basin, central Australia, yields three magnetic components: a drilling-induced remanence (C1) acquired during the industrial drilling process, a mid- to Late Carboniferous syndeformational overprint (C2) acquired during the Alice Springs Orogeny, and a primary remanence (C3). C3 passes a fold test and gives a latest Devonian pole (BC) at 47.1d̀S, 041.0d̀E with A95= 6.4d̀. The revised APWP for Gondwanaland requires West Gondwanaland to drift across the South Pole during the Late Devonian with a speed of ˜20cm yr-1, while East Gondwanaland remained at low-latitude positions. It is suggested that fast plate movement occurred far more often during the Palaeozoic than has previously been thought.

Notes: Interspecific competition between Amaranthus chlorostachys Willd. and sunflower (Helianthus annuus L., NSH-33 hybrid) in pure and mixed stands of the same density was studied in small plot experiments to elucidate the ecophysiological responses of the competing species under drought stress. When grown in a mixed stand the extremely low intensity of transpiration in A. chlorostachys resulted in a difference in the water use efficiency (WUE) values of net photosynthesis between the two species. The values were higher in A. chlorostachys. Interspecific competition reduced the total individual plant weight to a greater extent in sunflower than in the weed species by the end of the growing season. Reproductive effort was higher in A. chlorostachys than sunflower and, in our opinion, best reflects the outcome of competi-tion. On the basis of the correlation between WUE and reproductive allocation, reproduc-tive effort in sunflower and A. chlorostachys in both intra- and interspecific competition is determined by the value of WUE, which latter is also of prime importance in drought stress tolerance.
