    Description: A sounding rocket experiment was conducted to release molecules of H2O and CO2 into the daytime ionosphere within the simultaneous fields of view of the Millstone Hill radar and the Dynamics Explorer UV imager. Preliminary results confirm the creation of chemically-induced F-region plasma depletions and reduced UV intensities from the modified region.

    Description: This paper reports on a Workshop on Supernova Remnants and the Physics of Strong Shock Waves hosted by North Carolina State University at Raleigh, North Carolina, September 16-18, 1993. The workshop brought together observers, shock theorists, cosmic-ray specialists, and simulators to address the role supernova remnants can play in furthering our understanding of the complex plasma physics associated with collisionless shocks and particle acceleration. Over fifty scientists presented papers on various aspects of supernova remnants. In lieu of a proceedings volume, we present here a synopsis of the workshop, in the form of brief summaries of each workshop session.

    Description: Accurate semi-empirical parameterizations of the energy-differential cross sections for charged pion and kaon production from proton-proton collisions are presented at energies relevant to cosmic rays. The parameterizations depend on the outgoing meson momentum and also the proton energy, and are able to be reduced to very simple analytical formulas suitable for cosmic-ray transport.

    Description: The serendipitous discovery is reported of a relatively low redshift (z = 0.0875) 'E + A' (poststarburst) galaxy. The galaxy is remarkable for its extremely high luminosity, strong Balmer absorption lines, and morphology, indicating that a merger precipitated the starburst about 1 Gyr ago.

    Description: Observations of the Leo A dwarf galaxy, obtained over the period from 1980 to 1991 are reported. Forty two separate Charge Coupled Devices (CCD) frames were searched for variable stars. A total of 14 suspected variables were found, 9 had sufficient coverage for period determination, and 5 had Cepheid light curves. Four of these stars fit well on a P-L relation and yield a distance modulus, after correction for Galactic foreground extinction, of m-M = 26.74. This corresponds to a distance of 2.2 Mpc, placing Leo A near the Local Group zero-velocity surface.

    Description: The magnetic cataclysmic variable RE 1938-461 was observed by the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) Deep Survey instrument on 1992 July 8-9 during in-orbit calibration. It was detected in the Lexan/ boron (65-190 A) band, with a quiescent count rate of 0.0062 +/- 0.0017/s, and was not detected in the aluminum/carbon (160-360 A) band. The Lexan/boron count rate is lower than the corresponding ROSAT wide-field camera Lexan/boron count rate. This is consistent with the fact that the source was in a low state during an optical observation performed just after the EUVE observation, whereas it was in an optical high state during the ROSAT observation. The quiescent count rates are consistent with a virtual cessation of accretion. Two transient events lasting about 1 hr occurred during the Lexan/boron pointing, the second at a count rate of 0.050 +/- 0.006/s. This appears to be the first detection of an EUV transient during the low state of a magnetic cataclysmic variable. We propose two possible explanations for the transient events.

    Description: We report on two pointed observations of UZ For carried out by the imaging photometers aboard the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE), one as part of the EUVE Right Angle Program and one as an off-axis source during a guest observation. Both observations lasted approximately 3 days and covered a total of 72 orbits of the UZ For binary providing multiple coverage of all the orbital phases of UZ For. The resulting high signal-to-noise phase-folded light curve strongly constrains the emission and absorption geometry of UZ For. We have detected a narrow absorption dip that we attribute to the accretion stream at the location of the stagnation region many white dwarf radii away from the accretion spot and have also detected a broad dip caused by absorption much closer to the white dwarf surface. Both absorption effects are variable in time and phase. Based on the timescales of M-star eclipse ingress and egress, the angular spot size is constrained to be less than 5 deg; thus the ratio of spot area to white dwarf surface area is less than or equal to 0.0005. To explain the light curve phase duration given this small angular spot size, the extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) accretion spot must be raised vertically by approximately 5% of the white dwarf radius.

    Description: We present results of a 40 ks ROSAT pointed observation of the Hyades cluster. The limiting L(sub x) is approximately = 2 x 10(exp 27) ergs/sec at field center, increasing to approximately = 2 x 10(exp 28) ergs/sec at 40 min off-axis. This represents the most sensitive X-ray observation to date in the Hyades region. More than 30 sources have been detected in the Position Sensitive Proportional Counter (PSPC) standard processing, of which 15 are Hyades members, five are cluster candidates that are likely non-members, four are foreground or background stars, and the remainder are unidentified. One Hyad, VB 173 (= VA 276), lies in a confused region, but is detected as a distinct source in the soft band only (E approximately less than 0.5 keV). We report upper limits for four other Hyades members in our field, all M dwarfs. Of the 16 Hyades detections, two represent the optically faintest members seen to date in X-rays; VA 260 (V = 16.68) and VA 368 (V = 16.25). These are both M dwarfs of mass approximately = 0.15-0.2 solar mass and are fully convective stars according to current theory. Analysis of X-ray light curves using 1 ks bins indicates some variability in the strongest sources and a possible flare in VA 383. Two Hyades stars, VB 141 and VB 71, were also detected with the co-aligned Wide Field Camera (WFC) EUV instrument. VB 141, the second brightest X-ray source in the Hyades, remains an enigma: a rapidly rotating FO star with a fainter, long-period companion, this object has an X-ray spectrum indicative of strong coronal activity. X-ray pulse-height analysis demonstrates that coronal models with at least two temperatures are required for most of the stronger X-ray sources. The ROSAT X-ray spectra generally require higher temperatures for the hotter component in the M dwarfs compared to the F-G dwarfs.

    Description: We present the data for a redshift survey of galaxies selected from the database of the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS). The sample is flux limited to 1.936 Jy at 60 microns and covers 11.01 sr of the sky. It consists of 5014 objects, of which 2658 are galaxies. The remaining 2356 sources are listed in a separate table with identifications. Redshift data are also given for 212 IRAS galaxies which are not part of the complete sample, but were measured in conjunction with this project.

    Description: We explore the kinematics of 36 rich RGH89 groups identified from the first two complete slices of the CfA redshift survey. These groups have more than five members identified by a friends-of-friends algorithm at a number density contrast delta rho/rho greater than or equal to 80. To examine the stability of the determination of the velocity dispersion for these systems, we compare results for the original 232 members with results for a larger redshift sample, including 334 fainter members in the redshift neighborhoods. On average, we double the number of group members in each system. The observed distribution of velocity dispersions is stable. In fact, the velocity dispersion based on the original members identified in the CfA redshift survey is a reliable predictor of the value for the enlarged sample in an individual group. The velocity dispersion is thus a stable physical parameter for discrimination among systems galaxies. A larger sample of groups, particularly one selected from a distance limited catalog, should provide an interesting constraint on models for the formation of large-scale structure. We take H(sub 0) = km/s/Mpc.
