    Notes: Low density microcellular foam from poly(4-methyl-1-pentene) (PMP) has been metallized by laser-induced chemical vapor deposition (LICVD). KrF excimer laser radiation (248 nm) was used to photolytically decompose molybdenum hexacarbonyl with and without a buffer gas. Metal oxycarbide deposits 100 μm in diameter were formed. The microstructure of the PMP foam was unaltered. The deposition was confirmed to be 100 μm using scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. X-ray fluorescence was used to determine that approximately 80 ng of material was deposited. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Factor analysis of questionnaire responses produced by over 6,000 individuals revealed parental reactions to good and bad grades grouped themselves into five categories: (1) Grades are important to me; bad ones lead to negative consequences; (2) Good grades are important to me, but I will support you regardless of grade; (3) Bad grades make me mad; (4) Do your best, but there is more to life than grades; and (5) Grades are important; you will know how I feel on the basis of a joking comment. When these patterns were related to reports of specific student actions in college, such as getting good grades, dropping a course, or cheating on an examination, results indicated only a few significant negative correlations, and only for students whose parents reacted to bad grades in a negative emotional way; i.e., in terms of categories 1 and 3. More benign reactions - categories 2, 4, and 5 - did not correlate either positively or negatively with student actions or grades. Results were taken to suggest that parental reactions to grades are not only attempts at changing student behavior but also may be viewed as emotional responses expressing personal needs and values.

    Notes: Abstract This paper describes a recent effort to infuse the Total Quality Improvement (TQI) approach, popularized by Deming and others, into an upper-division, junior-senior economics course at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The process of infusing TQI into instruction has received relatively little attention. Most efforts to bring TQI into higher education focus on improving administrative operations and establishing courses and programs for students to learn how to apply TQI in their future jobs. The challenge is in using TQI to help students realize their potential for learning in traditional courses. The TQI instruction approach developed for use in the course had three major elements. Customer Focus is represented by the proficiencies emphasized in the course and expected of graduating economics majors. Student Involvement is represented by team-centered research projects whose purpose is to enhance the proficiency of creating new knowledge. Continuous Improvement is represented by ongoing student evaluations of the course and instructor, carried out by a student team. After discussing the motivation for adopting this approach and the independent development of the concept of proficiencies in the economics major, the paper moves on to discuss the planning, implementation, and execution of the course. Particular attention is given to discussing the operation of the teams and the development of a multi-faceted ongoing evaluation process to assess the effectiveness of the TQI Instructional Approach. The evaluation results indicate strong student satisfaction with the TQI orientation of the course, while at the same time pointing out ways of improving what was done.

    Notes: Host defense peptides are widely distributed in nature, being found in species from bacteria to humans. The structures of these peptides from insects, horseshoe crabs, frogs, and mammals are known to have the common features of a net cationic charge due to the presence of multiple Arg and Lys residues and in most cases the ability to form amphipathic structures. These properties are important for the mechanism of action that is thougln to be a nonreceptor-mediated interaction with the anionic phospholipids of the target cell followed by incorporation into the membrane and disruption of the membrane structure. Host defense peptides have been shown to have broad spectrum antimicrobial activity, able to kill most strains of bacteria as well as some fungi, protozoa, and in addition, many types of tumor cells. Specificity for pathogenic cells over host cells is thought to be due to the composition of the cell membranes, with an increased proportion of anionic phospholipids making the pathogen more susceptible and the presence of cholesterol making the host membranes more resistant. Structure-activity relationship studies have been performed on insect cecropins and apidaecins. horseshoe crab tachyplesins and polyphemusins. and the frog magainins. CPFs (caerulein precursor fragments) and PGLa. In general, changes that increased the basicity and stabilized the amphipathic structure have increased the antimicrobial activity: however, as the peptides become more hydrophobic the degree of specificity decreases. One magainin-2 analogue. MSI-78. has been developed by Magainin Pharmaceuticals as a topical antiinefective and is presently in clinical trials for the treatment of infected diabetic foot ulcers. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Derivatization is used to increase both negative-ion sensitivity and positive-ion sequence information in the liquid secondary-ion mass spectra (LSIMS) of a series of peptides. The derivatization method involves acylation with pentafluorobenzyl fluoride in a single-step reaction, and the reaction mixture is applied directly to the probe tip for analysis. Acylation takes place at the unprotexted N-terminus, tyrosine, and lysine. The derivatives exhibit increased signal-to-noise ration for [M—H]- ions, especially where there is not already an acidic amino acid residue in the peptide. In positive-ion LSIMS, the N-terminal group acts to retain the charge at the N-terminus, simplifying the fragmentation by producing N-terminal fragment ions. It also increases positive-ion fragmentation, sometimes very dramatically, making sequence determination more straightforward. The simplicity of the process, together with the enhancements it provides, make3 this a generally useful method for obtaining peptide structural information.

    Notes: A thermodynamic calculation is conducted to determine the distribution of hydrogen atoms absorbed in a one-dimensional palladium rod, along which a temperature gradient is imposed. The rod is assumed to be completely sealed, so that the total number of the hydrogen atoms is conserved regardless of its thermal conditions. A model calculation based on a zeroth-order interaction model predicts that upon the imposition of the gradient, the hydrogen distribution will significantly change from its initial uniformity. The profile of the redistributed hydrogen can be discontinuous at one point on the rod. The concentration gap developed at this point of temperature T implies that the two-phase region in the palladium hydride phase under the thermal equilibrium is nonexistent under the nonequilibrium condition. Similar to the disappearance of the two-phase region above the critical temperature, the concentration gap is reduced with an increase of the temperature gradient.

    Notes: It is well known that the signal output intensity from a dye laser oscillator depends directly on the pump intensity. The opposite effect, the dependence of the transmitted pump intensity on the signal intensity, is studied in detail. The theoretical results are compared with experimental data obtained using an argon-laser-pumped rhodamine 6G dye laser.

    Notes: Single crystals of mixed methyl-(2,4-dinitrophenyl)-aminopropanoate (MAP): 2-methyl-4-nitroaniline (MNA) have been grown from solution using a 40:60 mixture of ethanol and ethyl acetate. Formation of an equimolar complex is confirmed by x-ray diffraction studies. The complex crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21. The lattice parameters are a=6.9196(±0.005) A(ring); b=7.673(±0.008) A(ring); c=18.554(±0.001) A(ring); and β=92.547(±0.006)0. b axis is the unique twofold axis and there are two molecules per unit cell. The molecules stack along the b axis with MAP atop MNA atop MAP. Details of the molecular orientation are given. The Raman spectra also indicate that the parent molecules are not disturbed in the process of crystallization. The second harmonic generation efficiency of the new material for 1064 nm laser radiation is observed to be the same as that of MAP but lower than that of MNA. The latter is attributed to the absorption at 532 nm in the mixed crystal. The melting point determined by differential scanning calorimetry is 104.30 °C.

    Notes: The effects of pump polarization on the performance of synchronously pumped mode-locked dye lasers have been investigated. A semiclassical model is derived and the numerical results are compared with experimental data. The theoretical pump polarization dependencies of the pulse shape, pulse width, peak power, and pulse delay have been determined, and experimental data obtained with an argon-pumped rhodamine 6G dye laser are in good agreement with the theory.

    Notes: Based on a theoretical estimation, a simple new scheme to generate high-dose, steady-state neutrons is presented. This new high-dose neutron source makes use of the plasma ion implantation, which consists of a cylindrical palladium rod saturated with deuterium atoms and immersed in a deuterium or tritium plasma. The plasma is contained by a grounded conducting chamber. The palladium rod is connected to a high-power modulator, which provides a series of negative-voltage pulses. During these negative pulses, deuterium or tritium ions fall into the palladium rod and collide with the deuterium atoms in it, initiating fusion reactions and emitting neutrons. This neutron device will be portable, reliable and almost free from radiation hazards except for the neutrons themselves. For reasonable system parameters allowed by present technology, we find from a theoretical calculation that the average neutron production rate 〈dN/dt〉 = 2.3 × 1012 s−1 for D-T reaction, which may be more than enough for most applications. The average neutron production rate for D-D reaction is two order of magnitude less than that for D-T reaction.
