Notes: This paper presents the first endeavour to exploit a generalized differential quadrature method as an accurate, efficient and simple numerical technique for structural analysis. Firstly, drawbacks existing in the method of differential quadrature (DQ) are evaluated and discussed. Then, an improved and simpler generalized differential quadrature method (GDQ) is introduced to overcome the existing drawback and to simplify the procedure for determining the weighting coefficients. Subsequently, the generalized differential quadrature is systematically employed to solve problems in structural analysis. Numerical examples have shown the superb accuracy, efficiency, convenience and the great potential of this method.

Notes: This paper deals with the largest interior angle property of the Voronoi nearest neighbours and the Delaunay triangulation in two dimensions. It is indicated that each interior angle opposite to an edge of a Delaunay triangle is the largest of the interior angles opposite the same edge of all possible triangles on the same side. Based on this property, the algorithms for finding the Voronoi neighbours of a point (site) and for constructing the Delaunay triangulation are presented. The algorithms are especially useful for the meshless methods developed in recent years. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notes: In the paper the experimental results considering the effects of temperature on the elastic modulus and creep of concrete are introduced into the mathematical models of the three-dimensional finite-element method to improve the calculation of creep stresses in mass concrete structures. The finite-element implementation of the exponential algorithm for concrete creep at variable temperatures is studied. The numerical solution procedure for thermal creep stresses in mass concrete structures with temperature effects is presented and a three-dimensional finite-element program is developed.

Notes: A matrix relating stress and elastic strain tensors for anisotropic particulate materials has been derived. The magnitude of the matrix depends on the state of the material anisotropy. Anisotropy in granular materials depends on strain because normal and tangential particle contact forces, as well as the spatial distribution of the contacts, vary with stress and strain. However, the rotation tensor and the strain tensor cannot be independent; they must satisfy certain constraints to meet the requirement for macroscopic stress tensor symmetry. These conditions and constraints lead to the derivation of the matrix presented in this article. The principal directions of the stress tensor and strain tensor are generally not coincident, and the values of deformation parameters, Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio, are direction dependent; these two aspects are also discussed in this paper. Whereas this matrix can be used in static numerical analyses for elastic problems, we note that this relationship can also be used as a basis upon which to derive a fully incremental stress-strain relationship for anisotropic granular materials in the plastic state, where the anisotropy is evolving with strain.

Notes: Fracturing of rock under compression is a product of a series of processes, including nucleation, growth, interaction and coalescence of multiple microcracks. The formation of echelon arrays of microcracks and macrocracks is one of the crucial rings in the processes. We use a superposition and asymptotic approximation technique to analyse the interaction of multiple cracks with various geometrical configurations. It is shown that crack geometry has a strong influence on crack interaction. Echelon crack arrays produce the strongest interaction and are the preferred geometrical configuration for multiple cracks prior to the formation of through-going shear fractures. This technique provides parameter-dependent global behaviour, and is more efficient and easier to use.

Notes: An investigation is conducted on the performance of the curved isoparametric cubic beam element for analysing vibrational behaviour of coil springs. Firstly, the results of full and uniformly reduced integration are compared for three static problems. Uniformly reduced integration is shown to yield surprising accuracy, even for curved and pretwisted beams. In the latter case of a shear loaded cantilever beam, exact internal force values are obtained. Since element geometry is described by nodal co-ordinates and cross-sectional orientation only, the element proves to be ideal for modelling both helical and non-helical sections of coil springs. In addition, the formulation is easy to implement and simpler than those of previous ‘helical spring elements’. It is shown that accurate values for modal frequencies can be obtained with relatively coarse meshes.
