Notes: A mathematical model based on experimental results is set up for a typical model reaction of hydrocarbon reforming, namely the dehydroisomerization of methyl cyclopentane. Computer simulations shows that the existing theory about the reaction path of hydrocracking reactions involving bifunctional catalysts may be only partly valid.

Notes: The chemistry of the gaseous halide complexes which have been observed in large numbers in recent years is discussed for the example of chlorides. Homo-complexes - dimeric or polymeric chloride molecules containing chlorine-bridge linkages [e.g.(NaCl)n, n = 2 - 4; (CuCl)n, n = 2 - 5; (BeCl2)n, n = 2 - 4; Pd6Cl12] - occur through broad areas of the Periodic Table. Comparison of the dissociation enthalpy of such molecules with the vaporization enthalpy of the liquid chlorides is particularly informative. Hetero-complexes are formed from different chloride molecules by linkage through Cl bridges. Not only 1:1 complexes (e.g. NaAlCl4, TIPbCl3, KThCl5, CdPbCl4, AlUCl8) but also larger molecules (e.g. CoAl2Cl8, CrAl3Cl12, Cu2UCl6, In2UCl10) are known. Types of formulas, structures, and above all the formation enthalpies of such complexes are discussed critically. Hetero-complexes are useful in chemical transport reactions, as aids in syntheses, and in gas-chromatographic separations (lanthanoids, actinoids). They also play a part in many industrial processes (chlorination of ores) and in recently developed types of high-pressure discharge tubes.

Description / Table of Contents: [Mo6Cl8](OC6F5)4(HMPA)2, a Volatile Molybdenum Cluster CompoundThe title compound with HMPA = hexamethylphosphoric acid triamide has been prepared within the two-phase system CH2Cl2/H2O. Besides a thermal decomposition the compound is volatile in the vacuum at ≈300°C. The most intense complexion in the mass spectrum is [Mo6Cl8](OC6F5)4(HMPA)+, mass 1771.The characterization of the ions on the basis of the isotopic distribution was possible using the compound prepared with 96Mo instead of natural molybdenum. The mass scale has been calibrated by means of Pt6Cl12.

Description / Table of Contents: TeCl4 as a Transport Agent. TeOCl2.g and the Chemical Transport of TeO2 and Te6O11Cl2Mass spectroscopic observations show that in the system TeO2/TeClx the gas molecule TeOCl2 is an important constituent of the gas phase.Thermal decomposition of Te6O11Cl2, made on the thermobalance and also mass spectroscopic measurements lead to the enthalpy of formation of TeOCl2,g; ΔH°(298) = -42 ± 3 kcal. The chemical transport of TeO2 (or Te6O11Cl2) has been successful by means of Cl2, TeCl4 or TeCl2 as transport agents via TeOCl2.Thermodynamic calculations show that the suitability of TeCl4 as transport agent for many oxides, even in different oxidation states, is caused by the fact that this transport agent, dependent upon the solid acts as TeCl4 (TeCl2 + Cl2) or TeCl2. The redoxpotential required by the solid can be adapted by the gas without a loss of the transport properties of the gas phase.

Description / Table of Contents: Chemical Transport of Nickel by Indium IodideAt higher temperatures (1273 → 1073 K) the chemical transport of nickel by means of indium iodide going into the zone with lower temperature is caused by the endothermic reaction Ni + InJ3O,g = NiJ2,g + InJ,g At lower temperatures (873 → 973 K) this reaction is superimposed by the formation of gas complexes. These exothermic reactions cause transport in the inversed direction.
