    Description: The suspended rat has been used extensively as a simulation of the spaceflight animal. In suspension, hindlimbs are unloaded from the acceleration of gravity, much as they are in spaceflight. Comparisons of data from spaceflight (microgravity) and suspended (1G) rats have suggested that suspension my be an appropriate model, but no direct comparisons had been made between the spaceflight and suspended rat. Cosmos 2044 afforded the first opportunity to directly compare the effects of hindlimb suspension (HS) and spaceflight (SF) on a broad range of physiological and histological parameters. This paper reports on the comparison of skelton, skeletal muscle, heart, neural, pulmonary, kidney, liver, intestine, blood plasma, immune function, red blood cells, and endocrine and reproductive functions and systems.

    Description: We describe a device for performing MRI with laser-polarized noble gas at low magnetic fields (〈50 G). The system is robust, portable, inexpensive, and provides gas-phase imaging resolution comparable to that of high field clinical instruments. At 20.6 G, we have imaged laser-polarized (3)He (Larmor frequency of 67 kHz) in both sealed glass cells and excised rat lungs, using approximately 0.1 G/cm gradients to achieve approximately 1 mm(2) resolution. In addition, we measured (3)He T(2)(*) times greater than 100 ms in excised rat lungs, which is roughly 20 times longer than typical values observed at high ( approximately 2 T) fields. We include a discussion of the practical considerations for working at low magnetic fields and conclude with evidence of radiation damping in this system. Copyright 1999 Academic Press.

    Description: Excitation of the earth's ionosphere by delta function current sheets is considered, and the temporal and spatial evolution of wave packets is analyzed for a two-component collisional F2 layer. Approximations of an inverse Fourier-Laplace transform via saddle point methods provide plots of typical wave packets. These illustrate cold plasma wave theory and may be used as a diagnostic tool since it is possible to relate specific features, e.g., the frequency of a modulation envelope, to plasma parameters such as the electron cyclotron frequency. It is also possible to deduce the propagation path length and orientation of a remote radio beacon.

    Description: The possibility of accurate broad band radiation budget measurements from a GEO platform will provide a unique opportunity for viewing radiation processes in the atmosphere-ocean system. The CSU/TRW team has prepared a Phase 1 instrument design study demonstrating that measurements of radiation budget are practical from geosynchronous orbit with proven technology. This instrument concept is the Geostationary Earth Climate Sensor (GECS). A range of resolutions down to 20 km at the top of the atmosphere are possible, depending upon the scientific goals of the experiment. These tradeoffs of resolution and measurement repeat cycles are examined for scientific utility. The design of a flexible instrument is shown to be possible to meet the two goals: long-term, systematic monitoring of the diurnal cycles of radiation budget; and high time and space resolution studies of regional radiation features.

    Description: Auroral data from the soft particle spectrometer and the red line photometer on board the Isis satellite are presented as a data base for electron energy flux and optical auroral emission and are used to derive production efficiencies for 6300 A emission. Data obtained during a single orbit in which an aurora was observed is corrected by integrating the precipitating flux observed in four energy bands over the loss cone and eliminating the effects of airglow and albedo in the optical emission measurements. A regression analysis of the corrected data from 12 orbits is used to determine 6300 A production coefficients for the 5-60 eV, 60-300 eV, 0.3-1 keV and 1-15 keV electron energy bands. Production coefficients are shown to be in good agreement with theoretical calculations and rocket measurements in conjugate photoelectrons, and applications of the method to other data sets are discussed.

    Description: The data base on the mineral content, geomorphology, and extent of caldera in the Sierra Madre Occidental volcanic field is surveyed. Caldera identified from Landsat imagery and confirmed by field studies have generally had high structural levels and are therefore the youngest calderas and sometimes overlap. Detectable margins have been vertical and abrupt, while other structures indicate collapse during eruption and accumulation of thick, intracaldera facies. Calderas which collapsed are generally filled with sedimentation. Mineral deposits hosted by the caldera include tin, silver, gold, and iron, and a spatial relationship has been characterized between the Ocampa caldera structure and mineralized precaldera rocks. The survey has confirmed the locations of several dozen caldera, while the volume of silicic rocks surveyed indicates the presence of several hundred caldera in the Sierra Madre.

    Description: Magnetic reconnection between antiparallel field lines in the magnetotail is generally thought to produce plasma acceleration in the earthward-tailward direction. However, measurements of the plasma velocity in the magnetotail during substorm activity sometimes reveal a dawn-dusk component of plasma flow. In this paper, we show that a dawn-dusk component of plasma acceleration may be produced during reconnection if the neutral line is not perpendicular to the magnetic field. In this case, Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations show that reconnection between antiparallel field lines will initially produce plasma acceleration that is nearly parallel to the neutral line because the magnetic tension force is not opposed by a pressure gradient force in this direction. As the magnetic field topology evolves to a steady state, the plasma flow direction rotates until it is nearly parallel to the plane that initially contained the antiparallel magnetic field lines before reconnection (hereafter referred to as the initial field plane). However, the time required to reach a steady state (typically several hundred seconds in the magnetotail region) may be greater than the time during which the reconnection process is active. Consequently, bursts of plasma flow with a dawn-dusk component may occur in the magnetotail. The initial acceleration along the neutral line depends on the angle theta (sub B) between the neutral line and the initial field plane, with the largest burst of plasma flow along the neutral line occuring when theta (s ub B) = 45 degs.

    Description: The composition of the atmosphere is influenced both directly and indirectly by biological activity. Evidence is presented here to suggest that nitrification in soil is a potentially significant source of both NO and N2O. Between 0.3 and 10% of the ammonium oxidized by cultures of the soil bacterium Nitrosomonas europaea is converted to these gases. The global source for NO associated with nitrification could be as large as 15,000,000 tonnes N/yr, with a source for N2O of 5,000,000-10,000,000 tonnes N/yr. Nitric oxide has a key role in tropospheric chemistry, participating in a complex set of reactions regulating OH and O3. Nitrous oxide is a dominant source of stratospheric NO and has a significant influence on climate.
