Notes: Summary We describe an experimental and theoretical investigation of Wannier-Stark ladders in the optical spectra of (111)B InGaAs/GaAs piezoelectric superlattices. A unique feature of these structures is that an external electric field can be used to produce a flat superlattice—that is zero overall potential drop per period—in which there are large, opposing fields in the well and barrier. These fields cause a spatial separation of the electron and hole wave functions in the axial direction, leading to Stark ladderss which are intermediate between Type I (electrons and holes together) and Type II (electrons and holes separated by half a period) in character.

Notes: Summary Using the possibility to produce61Co sources at the MAinz MIcrotron,61Ni Mössbauer spectroscopy was applied to different kinds of chemical problems. Measurements of isomer shifts andV zz values in some common compounds and compounds with unusual chemical bonding for comparison with band structure calculations, measurement of61Ni Mössbauer parameters in model compounds for hydrogenase and dehydrogenase with an active [NiS4] centre, and study of novel binary NiF3 compounds at helium temperature are presented.

Notes: Summary Water-octane-C10E4 microemulsions in both the isotropic and lamellar phases were measured using small-angle neutron scattering. Varying the scattering length density of both the water and oil through hydrogen-deuterium substitution enabled us to isolate the scattering contributions of the surfactant monolayers and the water-surfactant and oil-surfactant interfaces. Analyses of the resulting scattering patterns allow us to directly determine the small mean curvature of the surfactant film as a function of temperature and correlate this quantity with the overall phase behavior. A simulation using a Gaussian random field yields the three-dimensional structure of the bicontinuous microemulsion having a surfactant monolayer with zero mean curvature.

Notes: Summary Recently, periodic dielectric structures have been proposed to inhibit spontaneous emission in semiconductors. From this suggestion, the new concepts of photonic band gap and photonic crystal have been developed. Zero-threshold lasers, wave guides and polarizers are promising applications. A new class of twodimensional periodic structures with hexagonal symmetry is investigated in order to obtain photonic band gap materials. This set has the hexagonal symmetry and contains, in particular, several structures previously discussed. The photonic band gap structure is related to the basic properties of the materials and some features of the opening of the gaps are explained. By varying the crystal pattern, we show how band gaps common toE andH polarizations appear for a new design of two-dimensional periodic dielectric structures. The dependence of the widths of these gaps on the filling patterns is studied and potential application for the creation of photonic crystals in the optical domain is discussed.

Notes: Summary We outline the historical development of stochastic resonance (SR), a phenomenon in which the signal and/or the signal-to-noise ratio in a nonlinear system increase with increasing intensity of noise. We discuss basic theoretical ideas explaining and describing SR, and we review some revealing experimental data that place SR within the wider context of statistical physics. We emphasize the close relationship of SR to some effects that are well known in condensed-matter physics.

Notes: Summary A-B block copolymers in a selective solvent—good for the B-species and bad for the A-species—form micellar aggregates with a compact A-core with a corona (brush) of B «hairs» reaching into the solvent. Whereas polystyrene(PS)-polyisoprene(PI) in decane forms spherical micelles with a PS core of about 10 nm radius, polyethylene(PE)-polyethylenepropylene(PEP) forms micellar platelets, the shape of which is goverend by the habitus of PE crystallites forming the core. These planar aggregates have large (several hundred nanometers) lateral extension and a core thickness in the range of 10 nm. Both systems are model systems for polymer brushes, either on a spherical surface or planar. Neutron spin-echo experiments allow for the investigation of the dynamics of the brushes which reflects their viscoelastic properties. Results of neutron small-angle and spin-echo investigations are reported. The brush dynamics is explained using a model based on an idea of de Gennes describing the brush properties in terms of scaling relations for osmotic pressure and viscosity of a semi-dilute solution with inhomogeneous density.

Notes: Summary The influence of the electron spin splitting on the stability of quasi-two-dimensional donor bound excitons (D 0 X) has been investigated in the Cd0.97Mn0.03Te/Cd0.7Mg0.3Te semi-magnetic semiconductor quantum well (QW) structure. TheD 0 X binding energy has been measured directly from emission spectra recorded at magnetic field parallel to the QW plane. Complexes have been shown to dissociate into a neutral donor and a free exciton with a spin flip of the electron at high magnetic fields when the electron spin splitting exceeds the binding energy.

Notes: Summary Two qualitatively different e-h systems have been investigated in undoped CdTe/Cd0.88Mn0.12Te and Cd0.97Mn0.03 Te/Cd0.75Mn0.25 Te QWs at 2 K and magnetic fields up to 14 T, namely a strongly spin-depolarized system in the CdTe QW and a highly spin-polarized one in the Cd0.97Mn0.03 Te QW. The interaction of the spin-aligned excitons is repulsive. In contrast, in the spectra of a dense spin-depolarized excitonic system an additional well pronounced emission lineM was observed at approximately 5 meV below the excitonic line. This line is assigned to the emission of molecules consisting of excitons with opposite spins of both electrons and holes.

Notes: Summary We have studied experimentally the coherent exciton-photon dynamics in a single, a double, and a quintuple quantum well structure under resonant excitation. In pump and probe experiments we observe an initial fast decay of the exciton population. This initial decay depends on the number of quantum wells. The population decay is accompanied by a coherent light emission induced by the first-order polarization, the intensity of which increases quadratically with the quantum well number. Interference effects and electromagnetic coupling effects between polarizations located in distinct quantum wells probably play a crucial role in the superlinear coherent emission process.

Notes: Summary The response of an overdamped system to quasi-monochromatic (high-frequency narrow band) noise (QMN) has been investigated by means of analogue electronic experiments. Measurements of the stationary and prehistory probability distributions demonstrate that large occasional, fluctuations are markedly different in character from those that occur when the system is driven by white or exponentially correlated noise. In particular, we report the first experimental observation of a switching point, a critical value of the coordinatex that separates regions which, with an overwhelming probability, are accessed by the fluctuating system along topologically different paths. The results are discussed in terms of, and shown to be consistent with, an existing theoretical description of the QMN-driven system.
