    Notes: Abstract A novel microscopic method of muon spin rotation for negative muon (μ−) attached to oxygen is applied on highT c materials LaSrCuO. The paramagnetic shift and relaxation rate are measured as a function of Sr concentration and temperature. Analysis shows the large difference in shift and relaxation between two different sites. A large anisotropy was also observed by preliminary measurements along different crystalline axes.

    Notes: Abstract Muon spin relaxation (μSR) studies were carried out on YFeMnO4. Two interesting phenomena were found in measurements of longitudinal relaxation time spectra atT〉T cusp for a single crystal: (1) difference of the relaxation rates between the directions parallel with and perpendicular to thec-axis, and (2) suppression of local field fluctuations in a longitudinal external field. The spectra atT 〉T cusp were reproduced with the function exp[-(λ0 t)β]. The results are discussed under a picture of the magnetic spin fluctuations of triangular antiferromagnets.

    Notes: Abstract The paramagnetic state of the muonic atom formed by the negative muon (μ −) bound to the oxygen in highT c LaSrCuO which was found in our recentμ − spin rotation experiments was applied to probe an interaction between the paramagnetic electron and the highT c supercurrent. The observed enhanced spin relaxation rates of the (μ −O) system in the superconducting state revealed the presence of such an interaction.

    Notes: Summary The crossbridge mechanism leading to oscillation in insect flight muscle is studied theoretically based on a three-state model proposed by Nishiyamaet al. [Biochim. biophys. Acta 460, 523–36 (1977)]. Skeletal muscle as well as insect flight muscle shows oscillatory contraction. We demonstrate this oscillatory contraction in muscle by choosing proper rate constants among the three states of the model. It is established that our model gives out not only Hill's force-velocity relation but also other mechanical properties of skeletal muscle. The model is then compared with two types of experiment by Kawai & Brandt [J. Musc. Res. Cell Motility 1, 279–303 (1980)] and by Steiger & Rüegg [Pflügers Arch. 307, 1–21 (1969)]. Kawai & Brandt obtained the Nyquist plot showing the relation between the phase shift and the amplitude of tension change in response to sinusoidal length changes at various frequencies. Steiger & Rüegg studied the power output and ATPase activity at various frequencies of the length change. Our theoretical results are in good agreement with the results of these two experiments. To determine the crossbridge mechanism which produces the positive power output, spatio-temporal crossbridge distributions in the three states are calculated. It is shown that, after the stretching phase of sinusoidal change in muscle length, the delayed rise of tension is caused by attachment of crossbridges to the active state via the preactive state while the delayed fall is caused by detachment from the active state after release. To obtain the oscillatory property it is not necessary to assume that stretch in muscle length increases the attaching rate as originally proposed by Thorson & White [Biophys. J. 9, 360–90 (1969)].

    Notes: Abstract The effects of anti-symmetric electrolytes (CaCl2, Ca(SCN)2, MgCl2, and/or Mg(SCN)2) and pH on the phase behavior, the ζ-potential, the hydrodynamic diameter and the surface charge density of an oil-inwater type (O/W-type) microemulsion formed in solutions of an amphoteric surfactant (N α,N α-dimethyl-N ɛ-lauroyllysine, DMLL)/n-octane/1-pentanol/brine have been examined. The formation of the microemulsion in the presence of CaCl2 and/or Ca(SCN)2 is of Winsor-type with an increase in the concentration of 1-pentanol. Particularly, microemulsion is not formed by the addition of Ca(SCN)2 in a pH region less than 2.6. The ζ-potential and the surface charge density of the microemulsion in the presence of CaCl2 decrease with an increase in pH and show slightly positive values in the isoelectric region (pH 5-7), while, in the presence of Ca(SCN)2, the ζ-potential and the surface charge density show negative values in the same region at which the net charge of DMLL molecules becomes almost zero. The hydrodynamic diameters in the presence of CaCl2 show a maximum value around pH 2.5, whereas, in the presence of Ca(SCN)2, the minimum value is around pH 5.5. Similar tendencies are recognized in results for the ζ-potential, the hydrodynamic diameter and the surface charge density of the O/W-type microemulsion in the presence of MgCl2 and Mg(SCN)2. A new formula to estimate the binding constants (K) of Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl−, and SCN− to the hydrophilic groups in DMLL molecules and the adsorption density of DMLL molecules on the oil/water interface (N) in the presence of antisymmetric electrolytes has been derived.K for Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl−, and SCN− was found to beK Ca=0.12M−1,K Mg=0.14 M−1,K Cl=0.0084±0.0016 M−1, respectively.N for DMLL molecules in the presence of CaCl2, Ca(SCN)2, MgCl2 and/or Mg(SCN)2 was found to be 0.50 nm−2, 0.38 nm−2, 0.44 nm−2, and 0.47 nm−2, respectively; and the surfactant (DMLL) numbers per O/W-type microemulsion droplet change from a few hundreds to a few thousands with changing pH. The larger the hydrodynamic diameter of the O/W-type microemulsion, the greater the number of DMLL molecules adsorbed on the O/W-type microemulsion surfaces.

    Notes: Abstract The average polarization of the nucleus12B (bound state) produced in the polarized-muon capture reaction12C(μ −,v μ )12B was measured by the muon spin resonance method in a pulsed muon beam. The polarization of12B was maintained completely under a magnetic field of 3 kG in a Grafoil target. After the observed result was corrected for the contribution from the excited states of12B, Pav (ground state) was deduced to be 0.462±0.053. This result yieldsg P /g A =10.1 −2.6 +2.4 , which is almost consistent with the PCAC prediction.

    Notes: Abstract Recent measurements on NiO and CoO show a complex temperature dependence. In this work, the local μ+ fields are examined over an extended temperature range. Only one precession frequency of 61.3 MHz was observed in the μ+ spin precession in zero field in NiO, similar to the case in MnO. The signal broadens at 200 K and is difficult to observe above 250 K. In contrast, in CoO, at least three lines are observed: two sharp lines at 54.2 MHz, and at 78 MHz, with an additional small peak at 162 MHz. Above 40 K, the 54.2 MHz signal (CoO) vanishes, but the 78 MHz signal survives to 110 K. However, at 270–280 K, a new signal at 13 MHz is also observed. Dipole field calculations of these 3d‐oxides (MnO, NiO and CoO) for various lattice sites (symmetric sites and O‐bonded positions) are examined and compared with the experimental results, with considerations toward the dynamics of the muons.
