    Notes: We present measurements of differential transmission and four-wave mixing in GaAs quantum well structures at 1.8 K near the inhomogeneously broadened lowest heavy-hole (hh1) exciton resonance using narrow band cw excitation. The data show an increase in absorption and an excitation lifetime of order 1–10 μs outside the spectral hole produced by the pump. The long lifetime and the experimentally determined absence of excitation spatial diffusion in this region suggests that optical absorption produces electron-hole pairs that are correlated but separately localized due to disorder. A phenomenological model is proposed to explain the nonlinear response based on two-photon absorption.

    Notes: We have extended the microscopic model of homogeneous nucleation to the heteromolecular case. This model, interacting clusters and heteroclusters (ICH), consists of a distribution of heteroclusters and clusters. The interaction between monomers, cluster–monomer, heterocluster–monomer, and heterocluster–heterocluster are taken into account. The method of correlation functions is extended so that configuration integral of the ICH model can be calculated. The concentration of heteroclusters is derived in terms of microscopic quantities. In the limit of no interaction between clusters and heteroclusters, the heterocluster concentration is expressed in terms of monomer concentration, the chemical potential of monomers, and the internal free energy of a heterocluster. In this limit the heterocluster concentration may also be expressed in terms of the total number of ions and the internal free energy of heteroclusters. The formation energy of a heterocluster is calculated.

    Notes: Median filters may be used with seismic data to attenuate coherent wavefields. An example is the attenuation of the downgoing wavefield in VSP data processing. The filter is applied across the traces in the ‘direction’ of the wavefield. The final result is given by subtracting the filtered version of the record from the original record. This method of median filtering may be called ‘median filtering operated in subtraction’. The method may be extended by automatically estimating the slowness of coherent wavefields on a record. The filter is then applied in a time- and-space varying manner across the record on the basis of the slowness values at each point on the record.Median filters are non-linear and hence their behaviour is more difficult to determine than linear filters. However, there are a number of methods that may be used to analyse median filter behaviour: (1) pseudo-transfer functions to specific time series; (2) the response of median filters to simple seismic models; and (3) the response of median filters to steps that simulate terminating wavefields, such as faults on stacked data. These simple methods provide an intuitive insight into the behaviour of these filters, as well as providing a semiquantitative measurement of performance. The performance degradation of median filters in the presence of trace-to-trace variations in amplitude is shown to be similar to that of linear filters. The performance of median filters (in terms of signal distortion) applied obliquely across a record may be improved by low-pass filtering (in the t-dimension). The response of median filters to steps is shown to be affected by background noise levels. The distortion of steps introduced by median filters approaches the distortion of steps introduced by the corresponding linear filter for high levels of noise.

    Notes: Abstract. As viral persistence is of major medical importance, well-characterized, simple models are needed to improve our understanding of persistent infections. We have chosen to study the molecular mechanisms of viral persistence with the poliovirus (PV), because this picornavirus is one of the best characterized animal viruses, it infects the central nervous system which is a target organ for viral persistence, and it belongs to the Picornaviridae family of viruses, which includes several naturally persisting viruses. We have developed models of PV persistence in neuronal and epidermoid cells, and the present review will focus on the latter one because both lytic and persistent PV strains can be used to study the PV-HEp-2 cell interactions. The viral determinants of persistence have been investigated with this model, and PV determinants have proven to be of crucial importance for the establishment of persistence in HEp-2 cells. Precise determinants of PV persistence have been identified for PV serotypes 1 and 3, in capsid proteins VP1 and VP2. These determinants modify the early steps of the PV cycle, and in particular, the conformational modifications of the capsid following virus adsorption onto its receptor. These results permit us to propose several hypotheses concerning PV persistence and the early steps of the PV cycle.

    Notes: Summary A modified Wachstein-Meisel lead salt method using glucose-6-phosphate or 2-deoxyglucose-6-phosphate as substrates was employed at the light microscopic level to map the rat brain for glucose-6-phosphatase (G-6-Pase). As has been described, most of the activity of the enzyme resided in neuronal cell bodies and dendritic stems. No differences were found between the results obtained with the two substrates. Two categories of brain structures with heavy and with moderate staining could be distinguished while the majority of brain regions contained only barely discernible neurons. Structures displaying very high enzyme activity included nuclei of cranial nerves, nuclei of the reticular formation, Purkinje cells, and some parts of the limbic system, e.g., CA 3 and CA 4 pyramidal fields of the hippocampus. It is pointed out that accurate biochemical determinations of G-6-Pase activity will critically depend on pains-taking microdissection of nuclei and cell layers. The histochemical results may be pertinent to the interpretation of the 2-deoxyglucose method for assessment of regional glucose utilization rates in brain. The present observations make it unlikely that regional variations in G-6-Pase activity account for differences in uptake and retention of radioactivity from (1-14C)glucose and (14C)2-deoxyglucose reported previously by our group.
