Abstract Phase transformations in slime of normal electrocorundum upon heating in air and its high-temperature interaction with kaolin in steady and interspersing layers are studied. Preliminary oxidation of lower titanium oxides contained in slime is a necessary condition for obtaining mullite. The properties of mullite and retained glass are studied in detail. Mullite has a nonstoichiometric composition and forms solid solutions with titanium and iron oxides. It is assumed that their intensifying action in synthesis is a result of the lower viscosity of the alumosilicate melt.
