    Notes: The excitation of the low-energy intermolecular modes of ammonia clusters by helium atom scattering has been calculated using classical trajectories. The energy transfer is investigated as a function of scattering angle (from 10° to 90°), collision energy (94.8 and 50.5 meV), cluster size (n=18, 100, 1000), and cluster temperature (Tc=1 K, 30–50 K, and 105 K). It is observed that predominantly the mode at 7 meV and to a lesser extent also the one at 12 meV are excited. These are surface modes that mainly originate from the angular motion of three adjacent N atoms. The excitation is nearly independent of the cluster size and the probability for multiphonon excitation steadily increases with increasing deflection angle. This trend is even strengthened by increasing the collision energy. The role of the cluster temperature is to broaden the energy transfer distribution with increasing values. The calculations are compared with previous and new measurements presented here of the double-differential cross sections (dσ/dω)ΔE of ammonia clusters of average size 〈n〉=92 at two collision energies and 〈n〉=1040 at one energy. While the general trends in the angular and energy dependence could be well reproduced, the correct cluster temperature was crucial in getting good agreement at the lower collision energy for n=100. At the higher collision energy, the large energy transfer is not reproduced, probably a shortcoming of the potential models to account correctly for the anharmonicity of the strong multiquantum excitations. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have investigated global teleconnections of climate to regional satellite-driven observations for prediction of Amazon ecosystem production, in the form of monthly estimates of net carbon exchange over the period 1982–1998 from the NASA–CASA (Carnegie–Ames–Stanford) biosphere model. This model is driven by observed surface climate and monthly estimates of vegetation leaf area index (LAI) and fraction of absorbed PAR (fraction of photosynthetically active radiation, FPAR) generated from the NOAA satellite advanced very high-resolution radiometer (AVHRR) and similar sensors. Land surface AVHRR data processing using modified moderate-resolution imaging spectroradiometer radiative transfer algorithms includes improved calibration for intra- and intersensor variations, partial atmospheric correction for gaseous absorption and scattering, and correction for stratospheric aerosol effects associated with volcanic eruptions. Results from our analysis suggest that anomalies of net primary production and net ecosystem production predicted from the NASA–CASA model over large areas of the Amazon region east of 60°W longitude are strongly correlated with the Southern Oscillation index. Extensive areas of the south-central Amazon show strong linkages of the FPAR and the NASA–CASA anomaly record to the Arctic Oscillation index, which help confirm a strong relation to southern Atlantic climate anomalies, with associated impacts on Amazon rainfall patterns. Processes are investigated for these teleconnections of global climate to Amazon ecosystem carbon fluxes and regional land surface climate.

    Notes: Ecosystem scientists have yet to develop a proven methodology to monitor and understand major disturbance events and their historical regimes at a global scale. This study was conducted to evaluate patterns in an 18-year record of global satellite observations of vegetation phenology from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) as a means to characterize major ecosystem disturbance events and regimes. The fraction absorbed of photosynthetically active radiation (FPAR) by vegetation canopies worldwide has been computed at a monthly time interval from 1982 to 1999 and gridded at a spatial resolution of 0.5° latitude/longitude. Potential disturbance events of large extent (〉 0.5 Mha) were identified in the FPAR time series by locating anomalously low values (FPAR-LO) that lasted longer than 12 consecutive months at any 0.5° pixel. We find that nearly 400 Mha of the global land surface could be identified with at least one FPAR-LO event over the 18-year time series. The majority of these potential disturbance events occurred in tropical savanna and shrublands or in boreal forest ecosystem classes. Verification of potential disturbance events from our FPAR-LO analysis was carried out using documented records of the timing of large-scale wildfires at locations throughout the world. Disturbance regimes were further characterized by association analysis with historical climate anomalies. Assuming accuracy of the FPAR satellite record to characterize major ecosystem disturbance events, we estimate that nearly 9 Pg of carbon could have been lost from the terrestrial biosphere to the atmosphere as a result of large-scale ecosystem disturbance over this 18-year time series.

    Notes: Abstract: In this paper we propose a new a posteriori error estimator for a boundary element solution related to a Dirichlet problem with a second order elliptic partial differential operator. The method is based on an approximate solution of a boundary integral equation of the second kind by a Neumann series to estimate the error of a previously computed boundary element solution. For this one may use an arbitrary boundary element method, for example, a Galerkin, collocation or qualocation scheme, to solve an appropriate boundary integral equation. Due to the approximate solution of the error equation the proposed estimator provides high accuracy. A numerical example supports the theoretical results.

In this paper we study a symmetric boundary element method based on a hybrid discretization of the Steklov–Poincaré operator well suited for a symmetric coupling of finite and boundary elements. The representation used involves only single and double layer potentials and does not require the discretization of the hypersingular integral operator as in the symmetric formulation. The stability of the hybrid Galerkin discretization is based on a BBL–like stability condition for the trial spaces. Numerical examples confirm the theoretical results.

    Notes: Abstract Basic investigations on the electrochemical behavior of alumosilicate zeolites were conduced in gas atmosphere and aqueous solution using impedance spectroscopy under in situ conditions where “zeolitically” bound water molecules are present in the channel and cage system. Natural stilbite (STI) and heulandite (HEU), zeolites of structure types with the same 4 – 4 = 1 building units, were used for these investigations. At a given temperature, well defined water partial pressures were applied in the gas atmosphere (in situ conditions) and the effect of polar organic molecules on conductivity was investigated. Furthermore, the effect of complete water saturation of the channel system on the Arrhenius type activation energy of conductivity was investigated in aqueous solution in comparison. The ion-exchange behavior of zeolite materials could be monitored under these conditions. These results show that, dependent on the different parameters affecting the zeolite conductivity behavior, they are applicable in the field of electrochemical analysis if these basic results on single crystals are transferable to polycrystalline materials.

    Notes: Abstract. Germline mutations of the adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) tumor-suppressor gene result in the hereditary colorectal cancer syndrome familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP). Almost all APC mutations that have been identified are single-nucleotide alterations, small insertions, or small deletions that would truncate the protein product of the gene. No well-characterized intragenic rearrangement of APC has been described, and the prevalence of this type of mutation in FAP patients is not clear. We screened 49 potential FAP families and identified 26 different germline APC mutations in 30 families. Four of these mutations were genomic rearrangements resulting from homologous and nonhomologous recombinations mediated by Alu elements. Two of these four rearrangements were complex, involving deletion and insertion of nucleotides. Of these four rearrangements, one resulted in the deletion of exons 11 and 12 and two others resulted in either complete or partial deletion of exon 14. The fourth rearrangement grossly altered the sequence within intron 14. Although this rearrangement did not affect any coding sequence of APC at the genomic DNA level, it caused inappropriate splicing of exon 14. These rearrangements were initially revealed by analyzing cDNAs and could not have been identified by using mutation detection methods that screened each exon individually. The identification of a rearrangement that did not alter any coding exons yet affected the splicing further underscores the importance of using cDNA for mutation analysis. The identification of four genomic rearrangements among 30 mutations suggests that genomic rearrangements are frequent germline APC mutations.
