Notes: : The total, protein, and nonprotein nitrogen, 3 amino acids (lysine, histidine, and tyrosine), available lysine, and in vitro protein digestibility in enteral formulas were determined. Available lysine and protein digestibility were lower in the liquid formulas tested than in the powdered formulas. The protein quality of the formula made from soy protein isolate (soy) was lower than that of the formulas made from casein, and the protein quality of a low-protein formula was lower than that of the standard formulas. There was a statistically significant correlation between the available lysine content and protein digestibility in the polymeric formulas. New methods are required for assessing the protein quality of formulas containing hydrolyzed proteins.

Notes: New experimental results are presented on the fundamental IR band shape of HCl dissolved in neat liquid Ar and Ar doped with Kr and Xe. A strong enhancement of the absorption in the range of a central Q-branch is observed in the spectra of doped solutions. Semiclassical molecular dynamics simulations of the spectral band profile are carried out using (12-6) Lennard-Jones site–site interaction potentials. The parameters of these model potentials were deduced by fitting the available anisotropic interaction surfaces, accurately describing the structure of binary rare-gas-HCl van der Waals complexes. Simulations realistically reproduce the observed triplet band structure and its evolution with changing thermodynamic conditions. The analysis of the influence of anisotropic interactions on the orientational dynamics of solutes and orientation-dependent radial distribution functions reveals the mechanisms that contribute to appearance of the Q-branches. It is shown that long-living solute-solvent spatial correlations present in liquid solutions retain to some extent the properties of van der Waals complexes. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The present study investigated the interaction of growth irradiance (Qint) with leaf capacity for and kinetics of adjustment of the pool size of xanthophyll cycle carotenoids (sum of violaxanthin, antheraxanthin and zeaxanthin; VAZ) and photosynthetic electron transport rate (Jmax) after changes in leaf light environment. Individual leaves of lower-canopy/lower photosynthetic capacity species Tilia cordata Mill. and upper canopy/higher photosynthetic capacity species Populus tremula L. were either illuminated by additional light of 500–800 µmol m−2 s−1 for 12 h photoperiod or enclosed in shade bags. The extra irradiance increased the total amount of light intercepted by two-fold for the upper and 10–15-fold for the lower canopy leaves, whereas the shade bags transmitted 45% of incident irradiance. In control leaves, VAZ/area, VAZ/Chl and Jmax were positively associated with leaf growth irradiance (Qint). After 11 d extra illumination, VAZ/Chl increased in all cases due to a strong reduction in foliar chlorophyll, but VAZ/area increased in the upper canopy leaves of both species, and remained constant or decreased in the lower canopy leaves of T. cordata. The slope for VAZ/area changes with cumulative extra irradiance was positively associated with Qint only in T. cordata, but not in P. tremula. Nevertheless, all leaves of P. tremula increased VAZ/area more than the most responsive leaves of T. cordata. Shading reduced VAZ content only in P. tremula, but not in T. cordata, again demonstrating that P. tremula is a more responsive species. Compatible with the hypothesis of the role of VAZ in photoprotection, the rates of photosynthetic electron transport declined less in P. tremula than in T. cordata after the extra irradiance treatment. However, foliar chlorophyll contents of the exposed leaves declined significantly more in the upper canopy of P. tremula, which is not consistent with the suggestion that the leaves with the highest VAZ content are more resistant to photoinhibition. This study demonstrates that previous leaf light environment may significantly affect the adaptation capacity of foliage to altered light environment, and also that species differences in photosynthetic capacity and acclimation potentials importantly alter this interaction.

Notes: : Interesterification (acidolysis) of fully hydrogenated soybean oil (melting point = 69.9 °C) with conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) was carried out in a batch reactor at 75 °C. Lipases from Candida antarctica, Rhizomucor miehei, Pseudomonas sp., and Thermomyces lanuginosus were used at 5% (wt/wt) of the total substrate load. The lipase from Rhizomucor miehei produced the fastest reaction rates, and the greatest extent of incorporation of CLA residues in acylglycerols was achieved in 12 h. Lipases from C. antarctica and T. lanuginosus produced slower initial rates, and maximum extents of incorporation of CLA residues were achieved in 24 h. The lipase from Pseudomonas sp. produced the slowest initial rate. The corresponding maximum extent of incorporation was reached in 48 h. Differential scanning calorimetry analysis of the triacylglycerol (TAG) fractions produced by C. antarctica, R. miehei, and T. lanuginosus lipases after purification by solid phase extraction showed little variation in melting point (60.4 °C, 62.8 °C, and 60.1 °C, respectively). By contrast, the corresponding TAG fraction produced by the Pseudomonas sp. lipase melted at 48.4 °C. The positional distribution of the TAGs produced by the lipase from Pseudomonas sp. differed appreciably from those produced by the other enzymes.

Notes: In this second part of the paper, some properties of the discretization error estimators are presented, although their theoretical background was already developed in the first part. Two numerical examples have been selected and will be used to check some properties of these error estimators. In addition to this, some practical conclusions will be addressed from the results and graphical output of the implemented procedure.

Notes: Abstract. In this work we show a singular K3 surface S of $\mathbb{P}^3$ such that $\chi(\mathbb{P}^3\setminus S)=0$ producing a counter-example to a conjecture of Veys.

Notes: This paper focuses on the study of finite element (FE) analysis reliability of non-linear planar structural problems (large strains and plasticity). In this first part, some error estimators of the flux projection type have been developed over the strain power density concept. Spatial, temporal and global error estimators are proposed. From this point, the authors analyse the behaviour of different discretization error components as a function of parameters such as load step or the number of degrees of freedom of the FE model. In the second part of this work, several properties of these estimators are checked with the application to some numerical examples.

Notes: Abstract.  In this contribution, we have introduced intramolecular coupling in order to study possible modifications in the topology of the resonances associated with the four-wave mixing signal emerging as a consequence of incorporating the permanent dipole moments when the rotating-wave approximation is not included.

Notes: Abstract The presence of endophytic Acetobacter diazotrophicus was tested for pineapple plants (Ananas comosus [L.] Merr.) grown in the field. Diazotrophic bacteria were isolated from the inner tissues of surface sterilized roots, stems, and leaves of pineapple plants. Phenotypic tests permitted the selection of presumptive nitrogen-fixing A. diazotrophicus isolates. Restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) of small subunit (SSU) rDNA using total DNA digested with endonuclease SphI and with endonuclease NcoI, hybridizations of RNA with an A. diazotrophicus large subunit (LSU) rRNA specific probe, as well as patterns in denaturing protein electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and multilocus enzyme tests allowed the identification of A. diazotrophicus isolates. High frequencies of isolation were obtained from propagative buds that had not been nitrogen-fertilized, and lower frequencies from 3-month-old plants that had been nitrogen-fertilized. No isolates were recovered from 5- to 7-month-old nitrogen-fertilized plants. All the A. diazotrophicus isolates recovered from pineapple plants belonged to the multilocus genotype which shows the most extensive distribution among all host species previously analyzed.
