Notizen: The dielectric characteristics of Co2Z hexagonal ferrites with Cu and Zn modifications are reported. Dielectric characterization experiments are performed in Z-type hexagonal ferrites having composition of Ba3Co2(1−x−y)Cu2xZn2yFe24−δO41, measuring the dielectric constant and loss tan(delta). Different dielectric behaviors are observed in the modified and pure Co2Z hexagonal ferrites, indicating that different kinds of carrier polarizations are involved in the ferrites. This conclusion is also indirectly supported by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy experiments, where it is shown that the variation of iron ions features the different dielectric behaviors. The impact of iron deficiency and other possible mechanisms are also addressed. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: ZnS:Mn has been in-filled in photonic crystals of submicron polymer spheres. The effect of the photonic band gap on the photoluminescence (PL) properties of ZnS:Mn has been investigated. Because of the overlap of the transmission dip of the photonic crystal and the photoluminescence band of ZnS:Mn, both suppression and enhancement in the PL of the phosphor have been observed. A strong dependence of the fluorescence lifetime on the emission wavelength in the range of the stop band has been found. This strong dependence is believed to arise from the very low photon density of state within the stop band of the ZnS:Mn in-filled photonic crystal as result of a high dielectric contrast between ZnS:Mn and the polystyrene spheres. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A single band of photoluminescence (PL) has been detected at room temperature from the Pb(ZrxTi1−x)O3 (x=0–1.0) surface. The intense and stable PL band covers 475±50 nm (or 2.67±0.25 eV) wavelengths and the corresponding photoexcitation (PE) band is in the range of 305±45 nm. It is found that changing the x value causes a negligible shift of the PL and PE peaks, and the light emission is subject to the Pb presence. The minimal lifetime of the excited photons was found to be 0.03 ms at x=0.5 and the maximum lifetime of 0.60 ms can be achieved by either decreasing or increasing the x values. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: This letter reports the photoluminescence properties of CdSe quantum dots (QDs) embedded in a ferroelectric BaTiO3 matrix. The main emission from the samples has been assigned to the band–edge transition of QDs. With an increase in the heat treatment temperature, the emission peak has been shifted to a longer wavelength. This shift has been attributed due to the dielectric environment effects of the matrix on the electronic structure of the QDs. The dependences of the peak position on the heat-treatment temperature and dot size are found in agreement with the theoretical simulation results reported previously. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: SiO2 colloid crystal infilled with BaTiO3 was synthesized by a process of self-assembly in combination of a sol–gel technique. It is found that infilling of the fully crystallized BaTiO3 into the colloid assembly can enhance the photonic band gap significantly. In the vicinity of the ferroelectric phase transition point of BaTiO3 (100–150 °C), the photonic band gap of the assembly exhibits a strong temperature dependence. At the Curie point, the band gap has a 20 nm redshift, and the optical transmittance reaches its minimum. Such a temperature-tuning effect in the photonic band gap should be of high interest in device applications. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A three-dimensional photonic band gap structure based on self-assembled crystals of polystyrene microspheres was fabricated by filling the pores with metallic silver. An almost complete stop band at 580–600 nm is observed in the optical transmission spectra. In comparison with pure polystyrene colloid crystals, the absorption band of Bragg diffraction in the composite was much more intense and broader, due to an enlargement of the contrast between the spheres and the background. A shift to shorter wavelengths in the band occurred because of a decrease in the average refractive index. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Ceramic composites with the composition of xPMZNT·(1 –x)NiCuZn have been prepared using a standard ceramic technique, in which x varies as 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.9, and 1.0. PMZNT is the abbreviated form of 0.92Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3·0.04Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3·0.04PbTiO3 (PMN-PZN-PT). NiCuZn is the abbreviated form of Ni0.2Cu0.2Zn0.6Fe2O4. The presence of ferroelectric PMZNT phase and ferromagnetic NiCuZn ferrite phase has been confirmed using X-ray diffractometry. Ferroelectric hysteresis loops and magnetic hysteresis loops have been observed and studied. In polarization–electric-field curves, the remnant polarization and coercive fields display little asymmetric characterization because of the existence of the internal electric field. When the amount of NiCuZn ferrite phase increases, the coercive field increases. Meanwhile, the saturation magnetization decreases and the coercivity of the composites increases with the increase of phase fraction of PMZNT, because the interaction between magnetic grains (or magnetic connectivity) is weakened by the existence of nonmagnetic PMZNT phase distributed in the magnetic phases. Under an applied magnetic and electric field, the magnetization and polarization of the composites can be easily tuned. The sintered composites possess high density and fine-grained microstructure. The average grain size of NiCuZn ferrite grains is slightly larger than that of the PMZNT grains.

Notizen: The influence of the substitution of copper for cobalt on the low-sintering densification, microstructure, lattice parameters, and electromagnetic properties of planar Z-type hexaferrites, which have a stoichiometric composition of Ba3Co2(10.8−x)-Zn0.4Cu2xFe24O41, were investigated. The experimental results show that densification of the copper-substituted hexaferrite is dependent on the amount of copper substitution and sintering temperatures. XRD analysis reveals that the solid solubility of copper in Z-type hexaferrite is limited to x≤ 0.30. At the same time, the lattice parameters (a and c) of Z-type hexaferrites with copper substitution showed a small change, that is, decrease of a parameter in the basal plane and increase of the c axial. Moreover, the microstructure becomes more homogeneous and intragranular pores decrease considerably, but the temperature-stable range of the Z-type phase formation is narrow. The copper-substituted hexaferrites, with x= 0.20 and sintered at ∼1125°C for 4 h, resulted in a high density sample of ∼4.68 g/cm3 as the optimal value, good magnetic properties, and the enormous potentiality for fabrication of multilayer chip inductors used in hyper-frequencies.

Notizen: (Pb,La)(Zr,Ti)O3 (PLZT) inverse opal photonic crystals were synthesized by a sol-gel process with synthetic opal templates of monodisperse submicrometer polystyrene spheres. This process involves infiltration of precursors into the interstices of the opal template, followed by hydrolytic condensation of the precursors and removal of the polystyrene opal combined with crystallization of PLZT perovskite by calcination at a final temperature of 750°C. By this method, PLZT inverse opal photonic crystals with a periodical structure of 280 nm center-to-center distance between the air spheres are prepared from opal templates of polystyrene microspheres with a mean diameter of 400 nm. The PLZT inverse opals reflect yellow-green light strongly.

Notizen: The effect of the addition of Bi2O3 on the densification, low-temperature sintering, and electromagnetic properties of Z-type planar hexaferrite was investigated. The results show that Bi2O3 additives can improve the densification and promote low-temperature sintering of Z-type hexaferrite prepared by a solid-state reaction method. The presence of Bi2O3 in the grain boundaries and the generation of Fe2+ degrade the initial permeability of the samples but make the quality factor and cut-off frequency increase. Various possible mechanisms involved in generating these effects were also discussed.
