    Description: Microbially mediated redox diagenetic processes in marine sediments are reflected in the amount and carbon isotopic composition of dissolved CO2 and CH4 (Claypool and Kaplan, 1974). Oxidation of organic matter gives rise to dissolved CO2 with about the same 13C/12C ratio as the starting organic matter. Subsequent reduction of CO2 to form CH4 involves a large (~70) kinetic isotopic effect, resulting in significant 13C depletion in the CH4, and 13C enrichment in the residual CO2. Ocean Drilling Program Leg 174A (offshore New Jersey) presented an opportunity to study these processes in shelf and upper slope sediments. Holes 1071A-1071D, 1071F, and 1072A were drilled on the shelf in water depths of 88.0-98.1 m. Hole 1073A was drilled on the slope in 639.4 m of water. Pore-water samples were collected for analysis at all three sites, whereas gas samples could only be obtained from Hole 1073A on the slope.

    Description: The recognition of finely disseminated gas hydrate in deep marine sediments heavily depends on various indirect techniques because this mineral quickly decomposes upon recovery from in situ pressure and temperature conditions. Here, we discuss molecular properties of closely spaced gas voids (formed as a result of core recovery) and gas hydrates from an area of relatively low gas flux at the flanks of the southern Hydrate Ridge offshore Oregon (ODP Sites 1244, 1245 and 1247). Within the gas hydrate occurrence zone (GHOZ), the concentration of ethane (C2) and propane (C3) in adjacent gas voids shows large variability. Sampled gas hydrates are enriched in C2 relative to void gases but do not contain C3. We suggest that the observed variations in the composition of void gases is a result of molecular fractionation during crystallization of structure I gas hydrate that contains C2 but excludes C3 from its crystal lattice. This hypothesis is used to identify discrete intervals of finely disseminated gas hydrate in cored sediments. Variations in gas composition help better constrain gas hydrate distribution near the top of the GHOZ along with variations in pore water chemistry and core temperature. Sediments near the base of the gas hydrate stability zone are relatively enriched in C2+ hydrocarbon gases. Complex and poorly understood geological and geochemical processes in these deeper sediments make the identification of gas hydrate based on molecular properties of void gases more ambiguous. The proposed technique appears to be a useful tool to better understand the distribution of gas hydrate in marine sediments and ultimately the role of gas hydrate in the global carbon cycle.

    Description: Carbon and oxygen isotopic compositions of authigenic carbonate nodules or layers reflect the diagenetic conditions at the time of nodule growth. The shallowest samples of carbonate nodules and dissolved inorganic carbon of pore water samples beneath the sulfate reduction zone (0-160 meters below seafloor [mbsf]) at Site 1165 have extremely negative d13C values (-50 per mil and -62 per mil, respectively). These negative d13C values indicate nodule formation in association with anaerobic methane oxidation coupled with sulfate reduction. The 34S of residual sulfate at Site 1165 shows only minor 34S enrichment (+6 per mil), even with complete sulfate reduction. This small degree of apparent 34S enrichment is due to extreme "open-system" sulfate reduction, with sulfate abundantly resupplied by diffusion from overlying seawater. Ten calcite nodules from Site 1165 contain minor quartz and feldspar and have d13C values ranging from -49.7 per mil to -8.2 per mil. The nodules with the most negative d13C values currently are at depths of 273 to 350 mbsf and must have precipitated from carbonate largely derived from subsurface anaerobic methane oxidation. The processes of sulfate reduction coupled with methane oxidation in sediments of Hole 1165B are indicated by characteristic concentration and isotopic (d34S and d13C) profiles of dissolved sulfate and bicarbonate. Three siderite nodules from Site 1166 contain feldspar and mica and one has significant carbonate-apatite. The siderite has d13C values ranging from -15.3 per mil to -7.6 per mil. These siderite nodules probably represent early diagenetic carbonate precipitation during microbial methanogenesis.
