Description: At Ocean Drilling Program Site 689 (Maud Rise, Southern Ocean), d18O records of fine-fraction bulk carbonate and benthic foraminifers indicate that accelerated climate cooling took place following at least two closely spaced early late Eocene extraterrestrial impact events. A simultaneous surface-water productivity increase, as interpreted from d13C data, is explained by enhanced water-column mixing due to increased latitudinal temperature gradients. These isotope data appear to be in concert with organic-walled dinoflagellate-cyst records across the same microkrystite-bearing impact-ejecta layer in the mid-latitude Massignano section (central Italy). In particular, the strong abundance increase of Thalassiphora pelagica is interpreted to indicate cooling or increased productivity at Massignano. Because impact-induced cooling processes are active on time scales of a few years at most, the estimated 100 k.y. duration of the cooling event appears to be too long to be explained by impact scenarios alone. This implies that a feedback mechanism, such as a global albedo increase due to extended snow and ice cover, may have sustained impact-induced cooling for a longer time after the impacts.

Description: Continuous sediment color records with a resolution of one measurement per millimeter were generated for Site 1098 (Palmer Deep, Antarctic Peninsula) from digital images of the core surfaces to test if the laminated intervals at this site will allow for analysis of high-frequency climate variability in the Circum-Antarctic. Long-term variation in color values correlates with gamma-ray attenuation bulk density. Darker colors are found in laminated intervals with lower bulk density, high biogenic silica, and high total organic carbon content. Darker color values result from the addition of dark laminae to background sediments that show little variation in color. The thicknesses of dark and light laminae were measured in the top 25 meters composite depth to determine the temporal resolution of the laminae. The alternation between dark, biogenic-rich laminae and background sediment essentially represents an annual cycle, but the sediment is not consistently varved. The modal thickness of light laminae is close to the long-term average annual accumulation rate, and results indicate that approximately half of the dark/light couplets in distinctly laminated intervals represent a single year. Missing biogenic laminae are interpreted to represent reduced primary productivity during cold years with delayed breakup of the sea-ice cover.

In:  Supplement to: Nederbragt, Alexandra J; Thurow, Juergen W (2001): A 6000 yr varve record of Holocene climate in Saanich Inlet, British Columbia, from digital sediment colour analysis of ODP Leg 169S cores. Marine Geology, 174(1-4), 95-110, https://doi.org/10.1016/S0025-3227(00)00144-4
    Publication Date: 2024-01-09
Description: High-resolution grey-value time series were extracted from digital images of varved sediments in Saanich Inlet, British Columbia (ODP Sites 1033 and 1034). Results allowed reconstruction of a 6000 yr long record with annual resolution. Composite records were compiled for Sites 1033 and 1034 by correlation of massive beds, which represent gravity flows, and of characteristic features in the varve patterns. The varve-count age-scale was calibrated with published radiocarbon ages. Results demonstrate that the ODP Leg 169S record is virtually complete. Saanich Inlet varve record has the potential to provide a high-resolution climate record. Temporal variation in varve thickness is interpreted to reflect regional precipitation history, with thick varves representing wet conditions. Long-term changes in varve thickness during the past 6000 yr coincide with known changes in global climate, but without an obvious one to one correlation between wet/dry in Saanich Inlet and warm/cold periods elsewhere. Varve thickness indicates that the climate around Saanich Inlet was wet from the start of the varved sequence at 6000 to 3250 yr BP, between 2100 and 1750 yr BP (Roman Warm Period) and from 500 yr BP onward (including during Little Ice Age).
