    Description: The 2001 Mars Odyssey orbital science mission officially began in late February, 2002. The spacecraft carries three science instrument packages: the Gamma Ray Spectrometer suite (GRS), the Thermal Emission Imaging System (THEMIS), and the Martian Radiation Environment Experiment (MARIE). The GRS suite of three instruments includes the Gamma Sensor Subsystem (GSS), the Neutron Spectrometer (NS) and the High Energy Neutron Detector (HEND). THEMIS consists of two cameras sharing a single set of telescopic optics: a 5-band visible imager and a 10-band thermal infrared imager. Spacecraft and instrument performance have been nominal to this point in the science mission.

    Description: Populations of small martian craters can now be studied using MOC images. The smallest craters record aspects of the crater production and resurfacing history that could not be observed previously. Examples from a number of terrains are shown.

    Description: The surface roughness of the Vastitas Borealis Formation on Mars was analyzed with fractal statistics. Root mean square slopes and fractal dimensions were calculated for 74 topographic profiles. Results have implications for radar scattering models.

    Description: The Mars Odyssey orbiter was launched on April 7, 2001, and arrived at Mars on October 24, 2001. The orbiter carries scientific instruments that will determine surface elemental composition, mineralogy and morphology, and measure the Mars radiation environment from orbit. In addition, the orbiter will serve as a data relay for future surface missions. This paper will present an overview of the Odyssey project, including the key elements of the spacecraft design, mission design and navigation, mission operations, and the science approach. The project's risk management process will be described. Initial findings of the science team will be summarized.

    Description: The polar layered deposits (PLD) of Mars have attracted considerable attention since their identification in Mariner 9 images, largely due to the possibility that these finely layered, volatile-rich deposits hold a record of recent eras in Martian climate history. The PLD have been a target of imaging and other sensors in the last several decades, but only recently has it been possible to obtain a moderately high resolution image map, using the visible sensor on 2001 Mars Odyssey's Thermal Emission Imaging System (THEMIS). THEMIS has acquired a 36 meter/pixel contiguous single-band visible image data set of the south polar layered deposits (SPLD), during the southern spring in 2003. The data will undoubtedly be applied to many problems in Mars polar studies. We use these images to further characterize the population of impact craters on the SPLD, and the implications of the observed population for the age and evolution of the SPLD.

    Description: The early part of the Mars Global Surveyor mission provided good TES coverage of the Mars south polar region. These data allow mapping of the polar cap recession, surface and atmospheric temperatures, and albedo features found within the seasonal cap itself over Ls = 180 - 270 deg. During this period, the seasonal south polar cap retreated continuously and asymmetrically around the geographic pole, similar to the observations of Viking in 1976- 1977 [3]. A prominent albedo feature on the seasonal cap is a region that appears almost as dark as bare ground, yet remains cold. We refer to this region, generally located between latitudes 85 deg. S and 75 deg. S and longitudes 150 deg. W and 310 deg. W, as the Cryptic region.

    Description: ESA's Mars Express Mission is an international collaboration between the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European space agencies with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) as a junior partner. The primary objective of the mission is to conduct a search for potential hydrologic resources from orbit and on the surface of Mars. Launch will be from Baikonur, Kazakhstan in late May 2003; arrival at Mars will be in late December 2003.

    Description: The European Space Agency (ESA) is currently conducting a mission to Mars known as Mars Express. The orbiter carries an instrument called the Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionospheric Sounding (MARSIS). The MARSIS experiment is a joint project between NASA and the Italian Space Agency, and is being carried out by the University of Rome, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Alenia Aerospazio, and the University of Iowa. This paper describes the science objectives of the experiment, the instrument characteristics, and applications of the MARSIS investigation to studies of the martian polar regions.
