Notes: Abstract  Exposure to the radioactive isotope 95Zr, as in nuclear accidents, and to stable zirconium, due to its use in industry, has increased the interest in the biokinetics of this element. Information has been derived mainly from tests performed on animals by means of radioactive tracers. Due to the fact that extrapolation from animals to humans is always open to question, there is an increasing need of a methodology which allows data to be obtained directly from humans. The use of stable tracers, being ethically justifiable, is a powerful tool for providing this information. As two tracers of the same element must be utilized in order to evaluate gut absorption, an analytical technique which is capable of distinguishing and measuring simultaneously different isotopes of zirconium in biological samples is required. Preliminary tests on laboratory animals were performed in order to assess the feasibility of the double tracer technique combined with proton activation analysis.

Notes: Summary A mathematical model for two-phase turbulent reactive flows is presented which is based on considering both phases in Lagrangian manner. The mechanical and thermodynamical properties of the two-phase mixture are calculated along the trajectories of “particles” representing the system. Similar to Monte-Carlo methods for solving a high dimensional joint velocity-composition probability density function, the turbulent gas phase is described by means of stochastic calculus. The deterministic equations for individual solid particles can be treated directly. In this approach, the interaction between both phases is not smeared over computational cells but restricted to the vicinity of solid particles by the definition of an “action-sphere” which is attached to every solid particle. Applications of the method to isotropic, homogeneous turbulence indicate that it is capable of providing information on the local structure of combustion zones with species formation and transport. The results show that the method is applicable independent of the combustion modes in the gas phase, and it provides extensive statistics of various correlations of properties.

Notes: Abstract An individual in vivo monitor using seven Germanium detectors with a total area of 24,000 mm2 was prepared for 210Pb skull measurements. System calibration with anthropomorphic head phantoms and a straightforward efficiency estimation yielded a minimum detectable activity (MDA) of 6.7 Bq and a lower limit of detection (LLD) of 14 Bq (CL: 95%). Two selected persons were measured for 1 h each to reconstruct their cumulative radon exposure. From the added pulse height spectrum a 210Pb activity in the skull of 3.1±7.2 Bq (result with 95%-CL) was estimated, but clear conclusions on their radon exposure using a new metabolism model of lead in man could not be drawn. Further improvements in the selection of highly exposed persons as well as head calibration and Lackground reduction are necessary using this attempt for retrospective exposure reconstruction.
