Notes: Abstract  Cryothecomonas longipes Schnepf and Kühn sp. nov. is a colourless biflagellate organism, 9–14 µm long and 7–9 µm wide when not filled with food vacuoles. It was detected in the North Sea, feeding with pseudopodia on diatoms. It penetrates the host shell, while the main body of the flagellate remains outside the frustule. Cells are covered with a multilayered theca. The pseudopodium protrudes through a preformed slit in the theca. Each flagellum also emerges through a pit in which the theca forms a funnel of complex structure that girdles each flagellum. The anterior flagellum is 9–15 µm long and oriented forward; the ventral flagellum, posteriorly directed, is 20–24 µm long and bears fine hairs. The flagellar roots consist of microtubules that emerge at satellites around the basal bodies and run along the flagellar pits. In addition, the ventral flagellum is accompanied by a band of six microtubules. It is proximally attached to a small fibrillar band, which interconnects the basal bodies. Cryothecomonas longipes has two or three types of extrusomes which pierce the theca when discharged. Their mode of discharge is discussed. Microbody-like vesicles containing small tubules are closely associated with older digestion vacuoles. Cryothecomonas longipes is compared with other species of the genus and a diagnosis is given.

Notes: Abstract: We investigate the non-equilibrium dynamics of spherical spin models with two-spin interactions. For the exactly solvable models of the d-dimensional spherical ferromagnet and the spherical Sherrington-Kirkpatrick (SK) model the asymptotic dynamics has for large times and large waiting times the same formal structure. In the limit of large waiting times we find in both models an intermediate time scale, scaling as a power of the waiting time with an exponent smaller than one, and thus separating the time-translation-invariant short-time dynamics from the aging regime. It is this time scale on which the fluctuation-dissipation theorem is violated. Aging in these models is similar to that observed in spin glasses at the level of correlation functions, but different at the level of response functions, and thus different at the level of experimentally accessible quantities like thermoremanent magnetization.

Notes: Summary In this paper, a new theory of the adaptive growth of biological materials is presented. The theory is derived from the basic laws of continuum mechanics. The material is described as a classical mixture of solid material and fluid. It will be shown that several well-known models of the adaptive growth are embedded in this more general theory. In addition, it is clarified on which material assumptions these models are based. Finally, a solution procedure for the new theory is developed, and several examples are given.

Notes: Abstract A new method for detection of trace metals in saline samples is described using batch preconcentration with subsequent ICP-MS analyses after direct sample insertion of the analyte loaded chelating resin. The samples were prepared using a CETAC DSX-100 system, which preconcentrates analytes and removes matrix components by a suspended particulate reagent (SPR). The SPR is consisting of polymeric beads of 0.2 μm size that selectively binds the trace metals by iminodiacetic chelating groups. The beads with bound analytes are then nebulized directly into the ICP-MS. The enrichment factors lay between 40 and 48 due to the enrichment of 120 mL suspension to 2.5–3.0 mL eluate. The method was applied and validated to the successful determination of traces of the transition metals Mn, Fe, Ni, Co, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb in the Open Ocean Seawater certified reference material NASS-4 and the Coastal Seawater certified reference material CASS-3. In addition to the certified constituents the rare earth elements La, Ce, Eu, Gd, Yb, and Lu were determined.

Notes: Abstract We report high-resolution measurements at saturated vapor pressure of the thermal resistivity R of superfluid 4He over the reduced-temperature range 3×10−7〈t≡1−T/T λ 〈3×10−5 (T λ is the transition temperature for Q=0) and heat-current-density range 4〈Q〈200 μW/cm2. For smaller Q and t, no thermal resistance was detectable below a transition at T c(Q)〈T λ. For Q≳10 μW/cm2 we find that the results can be described well by R=(t/t 0)−2.8 K cm/W with t 0=(Q/Q 0)0.904 and Q 0=393 W/cm2. Thus R has an incipient divergence at T λ which is, however, supplanted by T c(Q) where R remains finite. The results imply R∝Q (m−1) with m=3.53±0.02. This differs from the original assumption m=3 of Gorter and Mellink, and from experimental results obtained well below T λ. However, it agrees with measurements by Leiderer and Pobell at larger currents and further below but still close to T λ. Our measurements could not resolve a critical heat current for the onset of resistance.

Notes: Abstract. The parasitic Plasmodiophoromycetes Phagomyxa bellerocheae sp. nov. and P. odontellae sp. nov. have been found in the North Frisian Wadden Sea; North Sea, feeding on the centric diatoms Bellerochea malleus and Odontella sinensis, respectively. Their structure and development is investigated by light microscopy and compared. The diagnoses are given. The life cycle of P. odontellae takes about a week.

Notes: Abstract. We apply the strategy of regions within dimensional regularization to find functions involved in evolution equations which govern the asymptotic dynamics of the Abelian form factor and four-fermion amplitude in the SU(N) gauge theory in the Sudakov limit up to the next-to-leading logarithmic approximation. The results are used for the analysis of the dominant electroweak corrections to the fermion-antifermion pair production in the $e^+e^-$ annihilation at high energy.

Notes: Abstract. Electron–positron annihilation into hadrons plus an energetic photon from initial state radiation allows the hadronic cross-section to be measured over a wide range of energies. The full next-to-leading order QED corrections for the cross-section for $e^+ e^-$ annihilation into a real tagged photon and a virtual photon converting into hadrons are calculated where the tagged photon is radiated off the initial electron or positron. This includes virtual and soft photon corrections to the process $e^+ e^- \rightarrow \gamma+\gamma^*$ and the emission of two real hard photons: $e^+ e^- \rightarrow \gamma+\gamma+\gamma^*$ . A Monte Carlo generator has been constructed, which incorporates these corrections and simulates the production of two charged pions or muons plus one or two photons. Predictions are presented for centre-of-mass energies between 1 and 10 GeV, corresponding to the energies of DA $\Phi$ NE, CLEO-C and B-meson factories.

Notes: Abstract. Virtual corrections for electron-positron annihilation into one real and one off-shell photon of invariant mass $Q_2$ are evaluated. Special attention is paid to those configurations where the real photon is collinear with the beam direction. This calculation is an important ingredient of a Monte Carlo program, which simulates events with tagged photons from initial-state radiation, including NLO corrections.

Notes: Abstract. Single top quark production in electron-photon interactions provides a clean environment for the measurement of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element V tb . Aiming at an experimental precision at the percent level the knowledge of radiative corrections is important. In this paper we present results for the radiative corrections in quantum chromodynamics.
