    Notizen: Large construction projects are inherently complex and dynamic. A comprehensive answer on how to manage such projects successfully is difficult to provide. This paper expounds on the success factors for large construction projects in Vietnam. A survey questionnaire was used to collect data from practitioners. Factor analysis was employed to categorize these success factors perceived by 109 respondents from 42 construction-related organizations. Factor analysis uncovered that these success factors can be grouped under four categories, here titled the four COMs: comfort, competence, commitment, and communication. The result can be used as a guideline to successfully handle construction projects in Vietnam as well as in other countries, especially in the emerging economies in Asia and the rest of the world.

    Notizen: What does it take for an executive to manage effectively in the new economy? While the explosion of Internet-centered business has produced an unrelenting focus on e-commerce strategies, new business models, and processes, surprisingly little attention has been paid to how e-business is changing the competencies needed to manage effectively in this new business environment. The authors describe the findings of research by the Accenture Institute for Strategic Change to discover the unique competencies that managers need to excel in the new economy. While some management competencies have changed little, research shows that e-managers need to develop new or stronger competencies in six key areas: fast decision making; partnering; knowing the technology; staying focused in spite of information overload; making sense of the future; and attracting and retaining talent.

    Notizen: The influences of viscous shear stresses on the squeezing film behaviors in porous journal bearings with infinite length are analyzed. Based on the Brinkman model, two general coupled Reynolds-type equations derived between two curved surfaces are applied to evaluate the bearing characteristics. According to the results obtained, the Brinkman model predicts quite different squeezing film performances to those obtained by using the slip-flow model and the Darcy model. In addition, the quantitative effects of viscous shear stresses of the Brinkman model upon the porous squeezing film characteristics are more pronounced for porous journal bearings with moderate permeability parameters and higher eccentricity ratios.

    Notizen: UV curing technology has a number of unique advantages over the conventional curing technologies. However, until very recently, there had been few successful examples of the application of UV curing technology in ink-jet printing. Several reasons, including the requirement of low viscosity for ink-jet printing inks, were responsible for the lack of development of UV curable ink-jet printing inks. This paper describes, in some details, the challenges that a formulator had to face in developing UV curable ink-jet printing inks, together with information on the status quo of UV curable ink-jet printing technology.

    Notizen: A multidimensional measure of perceived online service quality was developed based on consumers' comments about their experiences with online retailers. These comments were organized and compared to the SERVQUAL scale. A survey was administered to adults who had made online purchases or role-played the experience. While reflective of the SERVQUAL dimensions, the new measures became less reliant on interpersonal interactions and more technologically relevant. A new dimension also emerged that reflects consumers' concerns for the geographic distance and facelessness of their experience. The study points to areas of improvement for online service quality.

    Notizen: Existing studies provide conflicting results regarding whether real estate investment trusts (REITs) effectively optimize and diversify institutional portfolios. Based on the style analysis of Sharpe, we extend Liang and McIntosh's study with a more complete set of asset classes over a longer sample period. We provide additional evidence suggesting that practicing analysts should include REITs as an asset class to optimize their portfolios. Specifically, our results show that the price behavior of REITs is unique and cannot be satisfactorily duplicated by combining equity, fixed-income securities, and unsecuritized real estate. The time series of the styles on REITs indicates that it is difficult to ex ante produce returns on REITs without diversifying into REITs.

    Notizen: The Revenue Reconciliation Act of 1993, implemented since 1 January 1994, facilitates the increase of institutional investment in the real estate investment trust (REIT) market. Utilizing this particular feature in the market, we examine the time-series effect of institutional holdings to distinguish the tax-loss-selling hypothesis and the window-dressing hypothesis for REITs. Consistent with the tax-loss-selling hypothesis, we have evidence that the January premiums decreased with the level of institutional involvement for REITs. Furthermore the January premiums declined significantly for equity REITs only that attracted more institutional investors than mortgage REITs. On the other hand, the January premiums did not decrease significantly for mortgage REITs. Overall the results suggest that trading strategies to profit the higher January returns may work only when institutional investors exit and leave the market.

    Notizen: Because consumers can vary greatly in the nature of their relationship with a service provider, it is reasonable to expect that a wide range of different values may influence consumption behavior. Additionally, consumers' values composition may predispose them to interpret their relationships with service providers differently and those service providers' marketing communications. The present study explores the range of values which motivate business consumers' reactions to service providers, specifically airlines' frequent flyer programs. As part of this process, consumers are segmented in terms of their values and relationships with airlines in order to better understand the motives and behavior that drive choice of service providers. Based on the results, specific communications strategies are offered for each of the identified segments that address the desired benefits sought by each value segment.

    Notizen: This study set to explore the career needs and proposes the concept of the gap between career development programs and career needs, and its subsequent effect on job satisfaction, turnover intention, in an effort to contribute to the field of career management, through the effective integration of career needs and career development programs. Questionnaires were completed by 367 R&D personnel from Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park (HSIP) in the north of Taiwan. The results reveal that R&D personnel have very diverse career needs at various stages of their career, and that depending on which stage of their career they have reached. The result show that the larger the gap, the higher the levels of both turnover intentions and job dissatisfaction. Managerial implications of these findings are also discussed.

    Notizen: Despite the disadvantages of limited research resources and little influence over the global electronic market, Taiwan is able to build from scratch an IC manufacturing industry that is now the fourth in the world in terms of total revenue. The manufacturing performance of Taiwan's IC industry significantly resides in low cost and quick delivery. This raises an important question: why Taiwan is able to achieve such manufacturing excellence in the IC industry. Proactive practices adopted by Taiwan's IC manufacturing industry are considered as a competitive weapon. The purpose of this study is to identify the proactive practices in relation to manufacturing performance based on a multiple case study. Furthermore, government policy, vertical disintegration, industrial clusters, foreign provider supports and technology manpower are the industrial factors that enhance the manufacturing advantage. Finally, the industry weaknesses and future challenges of the IC manufacturing industry are presented.
