    Notes: In 1994, Stevens and Campion introduced the Teamwork Knowledge, Skills, and Ability test (teamwork KSA test) for selecting employees for team–based organizations. Using experimental data from 57 ad hoc student teams (N = 227), we examined this test's relationship with both the behavior of the assigned leader in a team and the behavior of the other team members, respectively. We found that the teamwork KSA test successfully predicted individual team member behavior as indexed by external raters (r= .31) and peers (r= .34) such that higher scores on the teamwork KSA test related to greater individual effectiveness within the team. The teamwork KSA test was unrelated to the behavior of the assigned leader in the teams studied. Self–efficacy for teamwork was not related to individual behavior in teams, nor did it moderate the relationship between the teamwork KSA test and individual performance in teams. Limitations as well as directions for future research in team selection are discussed.

    Notes: The application/selection process can be thought of as a set of Bayesian opinion revision tasks, in which applicants obtain new information about the organization at each stage of the process and must integrate this information with their prior perceptions of the organization and the jobs. The Bayesian perspective provides useful insights for understanding serial decisions of this type. It suggests that real-world decision-makers are too sensitive to the valence and insufficiently sensitive to the diagnosticity of the information they obtain from interviewers, assessors, etc., and that the effects of information obtained early in the process depends on both the applicant's state of perceived uncertainty and on the relationship between the applicant's preconceptions and this early information.

    Notes: Prior to the onset of the Asian financial crisis there was a deterioration in the external trade position of most countries that were affected by the Asian currency crisis. However, little is known about why this occurred. This paper aims to identify the causes of a slowdown in export growth in Malaysia. While misaligned exchange rates have been widely cited as a cause of the slowdown in East Asia; in the Malaysian context at least a vulnerability to the downturn in the electronic cycle could also be a major factor leading to poor export performance. Using the US/yen dollar rate as a proxy for exchange rate misalignment and US total new orders for electronics as a proxy for global electronics demand, cointegration analysis was used to establish the likely causes of a slowdown in Malaysia's export performance. The empirical evidence suggests that the coincidence of exchange rate misalignment with a downturn in the global electronics demand cycle was responsible for the sharp deterioration in export performance.

    Notes: In studies of symbiotic efficiency it is of great importance to identify and separate individual Frankia strains from a nodule. Therefore, a new laser-based micromanipulation technique has been developed in which individual vesicles from root nodules of two Frankia–Alnus symbioses have been successfully cut loose and separated from clusters of vesicles in sterile conditions under light microscopy using a laser scalpel and optical tweezers. Vesicles from the Alnus incana–Frankia AvCI1 symbiosis were successfully isolated and grown in culture using this technique. The DNA from both Frankia sources was amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The work shows that a combination of laser-based manipulation techniques and PCR can be used for the separation and study of individual vesicles. This novel laser-based micromanipulation technique opens up various new possibilities, for instance, to study whether several Frankia strains can grow simultaneously in the same root nodule.

    Notes: The ability to evolve hydrogen using methyl viologen as an electron donor was assayed in the nitrogen-fixing actinomycetes Frankia sp. R43 and Frankia sp. KB5. To further examine the nature of hydrogen-evolving enzymes that may be present in these organisms immunological studies were performed. Under anaerobic conditions (both nitrogen-limiting and nitrogen-containing) Frankia sp. R43 but not Frankia sp. KB5 evolved hydrogen, which was not linked to NAD-reducing activity. Immunological analysis of total protein from Frankia sp. R43 and Frankia sp. KB5 using an antiserum raised against Ralstonia eutropha HoxF, recognized an antigen in Frankia sp. R43 but not in Frankia sp. KB5. Immunogold labeling using antibodies raised against the R. eutropha HoxH recognized sites in both hyphae and vesicles of Frankia sp. R43, but not in Frankia sp. KB5. Based on these physiological and immunological findings, we conclude that Frankia sp. R43 has a hydrogen-evolving hydrogenase.

    Notes: Real-time PCR assays, based on LightCyclerTM hybridization probes technology, originally developed for detection of Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa in clinical samples, were adapted to pharmaceutical products for topical use. After optimization experiments, the applicability of optimized PCR assays was assessed by testing 34 different pharmaceutical products for topical use in parallel with standard microbiological protocol according to European Pharmacopoeia. To reveal any problematic substances, which might inhibit PCR reaction, pharmaceutical products with as much different dosage forms as possible and of different composition were selected. Complete concordance between PCR and standard microbiological protocol results was obtained on a wide spectrum of pharmaceutical products. The adapted PCR assays can detect 1–10 CFU of both bacteria per gram or milliliter of pharmaceutical product in 26 h (including 24-h enrichment), whereas standard microbiological methods require 5–7 days. Real-time PCR assays proved to be efficient tools for rapid screening of S. aureus and P. aeruginosa in pharmaceutical products for topical use.

    Notes: Nitrogenous waste control in aquaculture systems is necessary to maintain healthy animals and to meet effluent standards. Decreased ammonia production has been attained in traditional livestock production systems by adding extracts of Yucca shidigera to the feed or storage lagoon system. An extract of Yucca shidigera was fed to post yolk-sac and juvenile channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus and hybrid tilapia Oreochrornis mossambicus × O. niloticus to determine the effects on growth, nitrogen retention, ammonia excretion, and toxicity. Post yolk-sac channel catfish fry fed the 1.0-g yucca extract/kg as an agar coating were the only group of experimental organisms that had significantly greater weight gains compared to the control and 0.5-g yucca extract/kg diet groups after 12 wk. Significantly lower fecal nitrogen concentrations were obtained from catfish fed diets containing yucca extract compared to the control groups, although no differences between fecal nitrogen concentrations for catfish fed diets with either 0.5-g or 1.0-g yucca extract/kg diet occurred. Ammonia excretion rates were significantly lower for catfish fed diets containing yucca extract compared to the control group. Accordingly, fish fed diets containing the yucca extract had significantly greater whole-body protein composition, while lipid levels were significantly lower. No significant differences in proximate composition occurred for fish fed any of the diets containing yucca extract, though growth rates were significantly higher than the controls. This study demonstrated that a yucca extract can be used in the diet of channel catfish, and increased growth and decreased ammonia concentrations can be obtained in rearing systems.

    Notes: Abstract.— Fish possess a growth hormone similar to mammalian growth hormone, and the presence of a growth hormone-releasing hormone-like material in the brain has been demonstrated in several teleost species. We investigated the effect of a mammalian growth hormone-releasing hormone on serum estradiol-17β and testosterone concentrations in tilapia Oreochromis mossambicus and a hybrid O. niloticus×O aureus because growth hormone has been implicated in the regulation of gonadal functions in teleosts. Three hours after injecting the releasing hormone, male and female serum testosterone concentrations significantly increased compared to controls, while serum estradiol-17β concentrations increased significantly only in females. These increases were commensurate with respective serum steroid concentrations in fish injected with gonadotropin releasing-hormone. Studies utilizing hypophysectomized fish resulted in non-detectable levels of serum sex steroids in fish treated with the growth hormone-releasing hormone; however, significant increases occurred in fish treated with human chorionic gonadotropin. Similarly, gonadal tissue incubated with growth hormone releasing hormone had non-detectable levels of sex steroids in the media, whereas gonads incubated with human chorionic gonadotropin had significant increases in sex steroid concentrations. These studies suggest that growth hormone-releasing hormone acts at the level of the pituitary. Although mammalian growth hormones have been shown to increase serum gonadotropic hormone concentrations, this study provides evidence that a mammalian growth hormone-releasing hormone has the ability to indirectly increase sex steroid levels in fish.

    Notes: Crystal structure and thermal properties of La1−xSrxFeO3−δ (x= 0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, and 0.75) have been studied by high-temperature X-ray diffraction and thermal analysis in air and nitrogen (p(O2) ∼ 10−3 atm) atmosphere. The first-order phase transition from orthorhombic-to-rhombohedral La1−xSrxFeO3−δ (x= 0, 0.1) was strongly shifted to lower temperatures with increasing Sr content. The phase-transition temperature was observed significantly lower in polycrystalline ceramics compared with fine powders. The temperature depression of the phase transition in the ceramics was qualitatively explained by stresses induced both by the anisotropic thermal expansion of LaFeO3 and the observed volume contraction of the phase transition. Rhombohedral La1−xSrxFeO3−δ (x= 0.3, 0.4, 0.5) were observed to transform to the cubic perovskite structure during heating. The second-order phase-transition temperature decreased with increasing Sr content and decreasing partial pressure of oxygen. On the basis of the present findings, a pseudobinary phase diagram of the LaFeO3–SrFeO3−δ system is presented. Finally, a severely nonlinear thermal expansion was observed for the Sr-rich materials at high temperature. The high thermal expansion in this region is due to a chemical expansion resulting from a reduction of the valence state of Fe.

    Notes: . The sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation (UVR, 280–400 nm) of ten species of freshwater and marine phagotrophic protists was assessed in short-term (4 h) laboratory experiments. Changes in the motility and morphology of the cells, as well as direct quantification of DNA damage, were evaluated. The net amount of cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers formed after exposure of the organisms to a weighted dose (Setlow DNA normalized at 300 nm) of 1.7 kJ m−2 was quantified by an immunoassay using a monoclonal specific antibody directed against thymine dimers (TTs). This is the first application of this method to aquatic protists. The results indicated that marine and freshwater heterotrophic nanoflagellates, representatives from the order Kinetoplastida (Bodo caudatus and Bodo sultans, respectively) accumulate significantly higher DNA damage than protists representatives of the orders Chrysomonadida, Cryptomonadida or Scuticociliatida. The high proportion of A:T bases in the unique kinetoplast DNA, may explain the higher accumulation of TTs found in bodonids. Experiments made with B. saltans to study the dynamics of DNA damage accumulation in the presence of UVR and photorepairing light, indicated that the mechanisms of DNA repair in this species are very inefficient. Furthermore, the dramatic changes observed in the cell morphology of B. saltans probably compromise its recovery. Our results show that sensitivity to UVR among aquatic phagotrophic protists is species-specific and that different cell targets are affected differently among species. While DNA damage in B. saltans was accompanied by motility reduction, altered morphology, and finally mortality, this was not observed in other bodonids as well as in the other species tested.
