    Notes: Abstract Electrodeposition of carbon on an aluminum electrode was studied in a LiCl–KCl–K2CO3 melt. A cyclic voltammogram for an aluminum electrode indicates that the cathodic current is due to the reduction of CO3 2− ions. Carbon films on aluminum substrates were obtained by potentiostatic electrolysis, and the cohesiveness of the films depended on the potential. SEM observations showed that the morphology of the deposited carbon film depends on the electrolytic conditions. Raman spectroscopy, XPS and XAES measurement showed that the film consisted of carbon in the sp2 state.

    Notes: Abstract The electrochemical behaviour of tellurium in 2.5 M NaOH solution was studied for the recovery of tellurium from alkaline leach liquor of cemented Te using steady state polarization and cyclic voltammetry. The deposition characteristics and the potential range for a stable deposit of tellurium were also investigated. The morphology of deposited Te in alkaline solution showed a very porous nature and needlelike radial growth. The potential range for stable electrodeposition was between −0.8 V and −0.95 V (vs Hg/HgO electrode), but electrowinning could be carried out at more negative potentials due to the disproportionation reaction of Te2 2−. Laboratory-scale electrowinning experiments were performed under different operating voltages, temperatures and initial Te concentrations. The current efficiency was about 85–90% for 50% recovery and about 50–60% for 90% recovery. The purity of electrodeposited Te was higher than 99.95%.

    Notes: Abstract  Hairy roots of Panax ginseng were obtained after root disks were infected with wild-type strain Agrobacterium rhizogenes 15834. Three lines of hairy roots with different pigmentation were selected. Embryogenic callus was induced on Murashige and Skoog medium containing 1.0 mg/l 2,4-D. The frequency of embryogenic callus formation was 37.4% in a line with red pigmentation. Somatic embryo development from embryogenic callus was efficiently achieved by lowering the concentration of 2,4-D (0.5 mg/l). After the germination of somatic embryos on medium with 10 mg/l GA3, the embryos were transferred to 1/2-MS medium without GA3. The transformed ginseng plantlets had an actively growing root system with abundant lateral roots. The phenotypical alteration of transformed ginseng plants might be valuable character for increasing root yield.

    Notes: Abstract  Hairy roots were induced from leaf segments of Crotalaria juncea, which is used as a green manure crop antagonistic to nematodes, by infection with a mikimopine type wild strain of Agrobacterium rhizogenes A13 (MAFF02-10266). These roots exhibited vigorous growth and abundant lateral branching on half-strength Murashige and Skoog (1/2MS) medium without phytohormones. The adventitious shoots were induced from 30% of root segments 3 months after transfer onto medium containing 3 mg/l benzyl adenine. These shoots produced roots 1 month after transfer onto 1.2% agar-solidified 1/2MS medium without phytohormones. Regenerated plants were successfully grown under greenhouse conditions. The transgenic nature of the regenerated plants was confirmed by Southern-blot analysis.

    Notes: Abstract  Somatic embryogenesis was observed in ray-floret explants of Dendranthema grandiflorum (Ramat.) Kitamura cv. Aboukyu on Murashige and Skoog medium containing high concentrations of 3-indoleacetic acid (IAA) and kinetin. 1-Naphthaleneacetic acid also induced somatic embryogenesis but indole-3-butyric acid or 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid did not. Other cytokinins, such as 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) and thidiazuron, were also not effective. No embryos were seen at lower IAA concentrations with kinetin and various concentrations of BAP, although higher BAP concentrations yielded many adventitious shoots. In contrast, no somatic embryogenesis was observed from leaves using any combination of plant growth regulators. Histologically, primordia showed a typical embryo shape with a well-developed vascular bundle between the shoot and the root primordia. Embryos had both stomata cells and a root system with polarity. Plants were efficiently regenerated from ray floret-derived embryos subcultured in the appropriate medium.

    Notes: Abstract A method employing isolated microspore culture was established for the androgenic embryogenesis of timothy (Phleum pratense L). Embryos/calli were obtained and green plants regenerated. The induction medium was PG-96 (1.0 mg l−1 2,4-D, 0.1 mg l−1 Kinetin) supplemented with 6% maltose monohydrate. Timothy microspore culture was genotype-dependent, among 12 genotypes, 6 produced embryos/calli and 4 produced green plants. Macerating the spikes with a blender and purifying the microspores at a mannitol/maltose monohydrate interface gave a relatively high percentage of cell vitality. The optimum microspore developmental stage was from the very late uninucleate stage to the binucleate stage. Heat shock promoted the initiation of microspore culture. Over 150 regenerated green plants were obtained; in a random sample of 32 of these 65.6% were doubled haploids (6n=42). Albinism was a problem in plant regeneration (9.3–22%). This paper is the first to describe timothy androgenic embryogenesis by isolated microspore culture.

    Notes: Abstract Plant regeneration in Arachis pintoi was obtained via two developmental pathways: organogenesis and somatic embryogenesis. Organogenic callus cultures were initiated from pieces of leaf on MS medium supplemented with NAA or 2,4-D in combination with BA, KIN or 2iP. The most suitable combination for plant regeneration through organogenesis was an initial medium composed of 10 mg/l NAA+1 mg/l BA followed by transfer of the callus to a shoot induction medium (MS+1 mg/l BA). Rooting of regenerated shoots was readily achieved by culture on MS+0.01 mg/l NAA. Embryogenic callus cultures were initiated from pieces of leaf on MS medium supplemented with PICL in combination with KIN, ZEA, BA or 2iP, and the most suitable combinations were 20 mg/l PICL+1 mg/l BA or 2iP. When pieces of embryogenic callus were subcultured on MS+1 mg/l BA, somatic embryos were differentiated and developed further into well-developed plants in MS+1 g/l AC followed by MS medium devoid of plant growth regulators.

    Notes: Abstract This paper reviews research on the role of electrostatic forces in pollination, both in natural and in agricultural systems. Researchers from various fields of biological studies have reported phenomena which they related to electrostatic forces. The theory of electrostatically mediated pollen transfer between insect pollinators and the flowers they visit is described, including recent studies which confirmed that the accumulated charges on airborne honey bees are sufficient for non-contact pollen detachment by electrostatic forces (i.e., electrostatic pollination). The most important morphological features in flower adaptiveness to electrostatic pollination were determined by means of two theoretical models of a flower exposed to an approaching charged cloud of pollen; they are style length and flower opening. Supplementary pollination by using electrostatic techniques is reported, and its possible importance in modern agriculture is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract The SRY (sex-determining region Y) gene encodes a transcription factor characterized by a DNA-binding motif termed the HMG (high mobility group) domain. The SOX (Sry-box) genes comprise a large family related by homology to the HMG-box region. We isolated a cDNA clone with an open reading frame encoding a putative protein of 384 amino acids, which shared 83% identity to the mouse Sox18 protein. Northern blot analysis revealed that a 1.9-kb band of human SOX18 messenger RNAs was predominantly expressed in heart, although weak signals were seen in brain, liver, testis, and leukocyte. By polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based analyses with both a human/rodent monochromosomal hybrid cell panel and a radiation hybrid panel, the gene was mapped to the chromosome 20q13.33 region.

    Notes: Abstract A-kinase anchoring protein 95 (AKAP95) is a nuclear protein which binds to the regulatory subunit (RII) of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP)-dependent protein kinase (PKA) and to DNA. A novel nuclear human gene which shares sequence homology with the human AKAP95 gene was identified by a nuclear transportation trap method. By polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based analysis with both a human/rodent monochromosomal hybrid cell panel and a radiation hybrid panel, the gene was mapped to the chromosome 19p13.11–p13.12 region between markers WI-4669 and CHLC.GATA27C12. Furthermore, alignment with genomic sequences revealed that the gene and human AKAP95 resided tandemly only approximately 250 bp apart from each other. We designated this gene as neighbor of AKAP95 (NAKAP95). The exon-intron structure of NAKAP95 and AKAP95 was conserved, indicating that they may have evolved by gene duplication. The predicted protein product of the NAKAP95 gene consists of 646 amino acid residues, and NAKAP95 and AKAP95 had an overall 40% similarity, both having a potential nuclear localizing signal and two C2H2 type zinc finger motifs. The putative RII binding motif in AKAP95 was not conserved in NAKAP95. A reverse transcription coupled (RT)-PCR experiment revealed that the NAKAP95 gene was transcribed ubiquitously in various human tissues.
