Notes: Abstract The H-basis concept allows, similarly to the Gröbner basis concept, a reformulation of nonlinear problems in terms of linear algebra. We exhibit parallels of the two concepts, show properties of H-bases, discuss their construction and uniqueness questions, and prove that n polynomials in n variables are, under mild conditions, already H-bases. We apply H-bases to the solution of polynomial systems by the eigenmethod and to multivariate interpolation.

Notes: Abstract. Reliable and precise lifetimes of excited states in 154 Gd and 156 Dy were measured using the recoil distance Doppler shift (RDDS) technique. Excited states of 154 Gd were populated via Coulomb excitation with a 32 S beam at 110 MeV delivered by the FN tandem accelerator at the University of Cologne. For 156 Dy a coincidence plunger experiment was performed at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro with the GASP spectrometer and the Cologne coincidence plunger apparatus using the reaction 124 Sn(36 S,4n)156 Dy at a beam energy of 155 MeV. Shape changes previously suggested to appear in the ground-state band (gsb) of 156 Dy and in the s-band above the first band crossing were not supported by the transition probabilities determined in this work. The measured transition probabilities of 156 Dy and 154 Gd as well as the corresponding energy spectra are compared with the predictions of the recently proposed X(5) model and in the case of 156 Dy also with an IBA fit.

Notes: Summary.  Optically active diastereomeric β-hydroperoxy esters 4 have been prepared by singlet oxygen ene reaction of β,γ-unsaturated esters 3 and subsequent horseradish peroxidase (HRP) catalyzed kinetic resolution of the ene product. The highest enantiomeric excess (up to 95%) has been obtained for the isopropyl ester threo-4c, which establishes that the size of the remote ester functionality exercises appreciable control in the enantioselectivity of the enzymatic kinetic resolution.

Notes: Abstract We determine the essential spectrum of the linearized Navier-Stokes operator with physical boundary conditions. In contrast to other approaches we do not make use of pseudo-differential operators. We establish a direct proof using only some fundamental results for matrix operators.

Notes: Abstract. Co/Cu multilayers were prepared by crossed-beam pulsed laser deposition and characterized by high-angle X-ray diffraction, as well as specular and non-specular reflection. Ion-beam mixing of the multilayers with 150 keV Cu+ ions and a fluence of up to 5×1015 cm-2 leads to the formation of a granular system of superparamagnetic Co clusters in Cu, as shown by magnetic measurements.

Notes: Abstract. The amorphous non-equilibrium state of the system Fe/Al is studied in bulk and thin-film systems. For bulk samples prepared by ion-beam mixing of laser-deposited multilayers, a bcc solid solution is found for alloys with up to 70 at. % Al. Around 75 at. % Al a Fe2Al5-like crystalline phase is found. An amorphous state with Fe2Al5-like short-range order is found for 80 at. % Al. In thin films, for example the amorphous Al-rich transition layer of a laser-deposited Fe/Al multilayer, the amorphous state can exist for up to 30 at. % Fe due to the high interfacial energy. By ion-beam mixing at low temperatures (about 140 K) an oversaturation with 40 at. % Fe can be achieved.

Notes: Abstract: Conformational properties of comb-like polymers strongly adsorbed on a flat solid surface were investigated using computer simulation and scanning force microscopy. The computer simulation showed that the macromolecules with asymmetric distribution of the side chains relatively to the backbone are effectively in a collapsed state even under conditions of a good solvent. They formed peculiar helical superstructures which could be observed by scanning force microscopy of cylindrical brushes of polymethylmethacrylate on mica.

Notes: Abstract Experimental x-ray spectra of the Cl L 2, 3 absorption edge for free NaCl clusters of various sizes are presented. X-ray absorption spectra of the Na4Cl4 cluster have been theoretically calculated by the total multiple scattering method. A distorted cube is determined as the most probable geometric structure of the Na4Cl4 cluster. Curves of the partial densities of states are obtained for the cluster.

Notes: Abstract In this paper new concepts and developments are presented for structural analysis involving uncertain parameters. Based on a classification of the uncertainties in structural analysis the uncertainty “fuzziness” is identified and its quantification is demonstrated. On the basis of fuzzy set theory a general method for fuzzy structural analysis is developed and formulated in terms of the α-level optimization with the application of a modified evolution strategy. Every known analysis algorithm for the realistic simulation of load-bearing behavior may be applied in the fuzzy structural analysis in the sense of a deterministic fundamental solution. By way of example, geometrically and physically nonlinear algorithms are adopted in the presented study as a deterministic fundamental solution for the analysis of steel and reinforced concrete structures. The paper also describes coupling between α-level optimization and the deterministic fundamental solution.

Notes: Abstract.  The visual homing abilities of insects can be explained by the snapshot hypothesis. It asserts that an animal is guided to a previously visited location by comparing the current view with a snapshot taken at that location. The average landmark vector (ALV) model is a parsimonious navigation model based on the snapshot hypothesis. According to this model, the target location is unambiguously characterized by a signature vector extracted from the snapshot image. This article provides threefold support for the ALV model by synthetic modeling. First, it was shown that a mobile robot using the ALV model returns to the target location with only small position errors. Second, the behavior of the robot resembled the behavior of bees in some experiments. And third, the ALV model was implemented on the robot in analog hardware. This adds validity to the ALV model, since analog electronic circuits share a number of information-processing principles with biological nervous systems; the analog implementation therefore provides suggestions for how visual homing abilities might be implemented in the insect's brain.
