Notes: The relationship between export marketing strategies and export performance is examined in Korea under the strategy-environmental co-alignment theoretical perspective put forth previously. A sample of managing directors of electronics exporters in Korea is used to test the hypotheses. Results indicate that the adaptation of products to foreign customers' tastes, adjustment of export prices to foreign market conditions, direct exporting, and trade promotions toward overseas distributors positively influence the performance of Korea exporters. Expenditure on overseas advertising was not found to influence export performance. Implications for marketing practitioners and academics are addressed.

Notes: In both their enforcement and training role environmental health officers (EHOs) may influence businesses' attitudes to hygiene training. A survey was conducted to examine EHOs' experience and perceptions of the provision and effectiveness of food hygiene training in small food businesses. The results indicate that officers had concerns about the content and the delivery of hygiene courses and about the quality of other hygiene trainers. Officers use the industry guides to advise on training but receive limited guidance on the assessment of hygiene training in the workplace. The checking of training records was considered to be less important than the use of observation and questioning for assessing hygiene training effectiveness. Environmental factors, such as supervisor support and situational aids were judged by officers to be important factors in the implementation of workplace hygiene training. They reported low levels of formal refresher training and active support of training by management.

Notes: Observations of food handlers' practices have many uses. Describes the use of a notational analysis technique to monitor and analyse specific food safety actions of caterers. A total of 115 food handlers from 29 catering businesses were observed carrying out 31,050 food preparation and hygiene actions in their workplace. Notational analysis was found to offer little advantage, compared to traditional observation methods. However, this technique did allow tracking of sequential events and was successful in identifying and recording a greater number of cross-contamination events than would have been highlighted using traditional approaches. The results demonstrated that, based on hygiene guidelines, food handlers were required to implement de-contamination actions on a large number of occasions. These de-contamination actions were frequently inadequately conducted. To improve standards of food hygiene in catering there is a need to minimise the requirements for de-contamination activities thereby reducing the potential for cross-contamination.

Notes: Design and build is becoming an increasingly adopted procurement solution for construction projects. Characterised by its integrated team approach, it allows the construction contractor to take a more central role in the design process than its traditional alternatives. Its global popularity and rate of adoption necessitate greater understanding by those involved, particularly client organisations whose primary business is not construction. This research is focused on understanding the team dynamics at the pre-tender stage. Employing a grounded theory methodology and semi-structured interviews, the central theme of "short-circuiting" the tender development process by architects emerged. Four major themes responsible for short-circuiting are: the quality and distribution of the "employer's requirements"; architect's unwillingness to realign their role with design and build; clarity of the contractor's communication channels; and client's misunderstanding of the time required to successfully procure buildings. The short-circuiting manifests itself in a confusion of roles and responsibility of the parties involved, leading to client dissatisfaction in the finished construction product.

Notes: The use of an observational approach in conjunction with isolation techniques for campylobacter and salmonella detection has facilitated a detailed evaluation of the risk of cross contamination during food preparation. Identification of suspected exposure routes has linked naturally contaminated raw foods with important food-handling malpractices, contaminated contact surfaces and ready-to-eat foods. In a model domestic kitchen, 29 per cent of food preparation sessions resulted in positive campylobacter isolations from prepared salads, cleaning materials and food-contact surfaces. Typing results showed that specific campylobacter strains isolated from prepared chicken salads were the same as the strains isolated from the raw chicken pieces, indicating microbial transfer during food preparation. Data obtained from this study can be used for exposure assessment, risk management and in the development of consumer risk communication strategies.

Notes: The classic audit cycle has been applied to the prescribing practice to improve aspects of the quality of prescribing in the setting of a department of health care for older people in a district general hospital. Details the methods used both to increase the appropriate prescribing of drugs of proven benefit, and also to restrict the use of drugs which may prove hazardous. The latter provides an example of risk management. Also discusses the dilemmas posed in treating older people with multiple pathologies, on the one hand, trying to avoid an ageist approach, on the other, attempting to minimise the pitfalls of polypharmacy.

Notes: The internationalization of service firms is expanding dramatically, fueled by recent technological innovations and reductions of trade barriers. Drawing upon Dunning's eclectic theory, firm- and location-specific factors which have been found to be antecedents of internationalization of manufacturing firms are extended to determine their applicability to the internationalization of service firms. The hypotheses are empirically examined through a survey of 228 business-to-business service firms. Findings indicate that the firm-specific factor of firm size and the location-specific factor of market characteristics influence management attitudes toward operating internationally, which in turn influence the degree of internationalization of service firms. Practical implications, drawn from the results, are offered for managers of service firms who are facing the task of internationalizing.

Notes: This paper addresses the relationship between temperature or relative humidity and the number of patients seen and how often the treating physician deemed it necessary to transport the patient to the hospital. A retrospective review was performed on 251 patients seen at the Dayton airshow during the 2-day period of 21-22 July 2001. The air show has an attendance of approximately 50,000 people spread out through this 3-day event. The first aid tents that provide the medical care at the air show are staffed by either senior emergency medicine residents or emergency medicine attendings. Results showed that the relationship between the number of patients transported and the temperature reveals a pattern of more patients being transported as the temperature increases.

Notes: Describes a survey of food safety training for staff in the retail, care and catering industry. Training provisions were evaluated against the guidance in the relevant industry guides. Additional information was collected on the managers' perceptions of and attitudes towards hygiene training. The extent and level of training of the retail butchers, who had to comply with the licensing regulations, was better than care homes and caterers of an equivalent size. Some of the care homes were not compliant with the training requirements of the Food Safety (General Food Hygiene) Regulations. There was a similar lack of hygiene management systems in most of the catering businesses in this study but senior staff were better trained and were able to provide in-house training to greater effect. All the businesses carried out on-the-job training, although in some this was restricted to induction training, the content of which was often ill defined. There was a lack of documented hygiene procedures, reinforcement strategies and very little refresher training activity. Many managers failed to provide feedback on performance, to test hygiene knowledge or praise good hygienic performance. Half of the managers were not trained to train, and often were untrained in elementary hygiene themselves. Some managers recognised that conditions in the workplace and time pressures could contribute to poor hygiene performances.

Notes: For over 40 years academicians and practitioners have debated the standardization versus adaptation of international marketing strategy. Despite the importance of, and tremendous interest in the topic, and the volume of scholarly activity this topic has generated, the debate remains unresolved. Why? Here, it is argued that the last 40 years of scholarly research has advanced without a strong underlying theoretical framework. The historical foundations of the standardization/adaptation perspective are presented, followed by a critical evaluation of the field under the guiding framework of the fundamentals of theoretical construction. Suggestions for developing a stronger theoretical foundation, as well as directions for future research are addressed.
