    Notes: Abstract. The effects of saving and spending patterns on holding time distribution of money are investigated based on the ideal gas-like models. We show the steady-state distribution obeys an exponential law when the saving factor is set uniformly, and a power law when the saving factor is set diversely. The power distribution can also be obtained by proposing a new model where the preferential spending behavior is considered. The association of the distribution with the probability of money to be exchanged has also been discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Photoluminescence (PL) from alkyl-terminated silicon nanocrystallites as a function of size has been studied. Ultraviolet–blue luminescence (390–410 nm) is observed from as-prepared silicon nanoclusters with diameters from 3 to 8 nm. After 1 h of annealing at 162°C in 2-methoxyethyl ether (diglyme), the λ max of PL shifts from 360 to 420 nm. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) images show that individual silicon nanoparticles are fused to form pairs of nanoparticles. FTIR spectra show that the alkyl groups remain on the surface of silicon nanoparticles. As the temperature is raised to 250°C for 1 h, the PL no longer shows any peak in the visible light region. TEM images show that the silicon nanoparticles are aggregated and fused uniformly in one single dimension, to form a strip, and these strips parallel each other. When the temperature is raised to 350°C these silicon nanoparticles form a large piece of silicon textile network, showing that functionalized alkyl surface does not persist above this temperature. A strong Si–O–Si asymmetric stretching vibration appears between 1000 and 1100 cm−1 at the expense of the C–H vibrational modes and there is no more change after 3 h of annealing at 250 or 350°C. These results provide strong evidence that the PL originates from quantum confinement.

    Notes: Abstract: Cross-sections for the production of neutron-rich nuclei obtained by neutron-induced fission of natural uranium have been measured. The neutrons were generated by bombarding a 13C target with 55 MeV protons. The results, position of the maximum in the (Z, A)-plane, width and magnitude, are very comparable with those where the neutrons are generated by bombardment of natural 12C graphite with 50 MeV deuterons. Depending on the geometry of the converter/target assembly the isotope yields, however, are a factor of 2-3 lower due to less efficient production of neutrons per primary projectile, especially at small forward angles.

    Notes: Abstract. We propose a theoretical scheme to observe the loss of quantum coherence through the coupling of the superconducting charge qubit system to a nanomechanical resonator (NAMR), which has already been successfully fabricated in experiment and is convenient to manipulate. With a similar form to the usual cavity QED system, this qubit-NAMR composite system with engineered coupling exhibits the collapse and revival phenomenon in a progressive decoherence process. Corresponding to the two components of superposition of the two charge eigenstates, the state of the nanomechanical resonator evolves simultaneously towards two distinct quasi-classical states. Therefore the generalized “which way” detection by the NAMR induces the quantum decoherence of the charge qubit.

    Notes: Abstract: The electronic structure of LaNi5 and its hydride LaNi5H7 are obtained using the self-consistent cluster-embedding calculation method. The Fermi level of LaNi5H7 is 5.172 eV higher than that of LaNi5. In both materials, the La 5d electrons locate nearby the Fermi levels, and make only a small contribution to the density of states (DOS) of the valence bands. There is no significant charge transfer from La to Ni in LaNi5. But for LaNi5H7, there is a charge transfer of 1.16 electrons from La to H, and H atoms are combined mainly with Ni to form hybridized orbitals in the energy regions far below the Fermi level. An explanation of hydrogenation of LaNi5 is proposed: It is easy for hydrogens to take off some localized La 5 d electrons near the Fermi level, and combine with Ni to form hybridized orbitals in lower energy regions. This process is therefore in favor of energy, and forces a lattice expansion until the Fermi level rises to zero.

    Notes: Abstract —Seismic amplitude data are used to invert for the geometry of reflection interfaces of multi-layered structures, in which the reflection interface is parameterised by a set of Fourier series with different wavenumbers. Two main difficulties arise in amplitude inversion: a high wavenumber oscillation artificially generated by inversion on shallow interfaces, and a failure to recover the long wavelength components of deep, curved interfaces. To overcome these difficulties, the capabilities of two inversion algorithms, a damped subspace method and a multi-scale scheme are investigated. Based on those two schemes, we develop a multi-stage damped subspace method to abate the instability of high wavenumber components and, simultaneously, to enhance the resolution of the low wavenumber components of the subsurface reflectors from seismic amplitude inversion.

    Notes: Abstract. We have synthesized the ytterbium fulleride compounds YbxC60 (x=1–6) at a range of lower temperature (530 °C–570 °C). Except for the nominal composition Yb3C60 compound, which has been reported in the references, we also obtained a new phase Yb6C60, whose structure is orthorhombic with space group P21212 and unit cell parameters a=21.28 Å, b=20.13 Å and c=15.89 Å. The YbxC60 compounds are sensitive to oxygen, the samples exposed in air convert to an amorphous phase and Yb2O3 compound.

    Notes: Abstract. The processes leading to the formation of Cu:Al2O3 composite films on Si (001) with a well defined nanostructure by alternate pulsed laser deposition (a-PLD) in vacuum are investigated. Alternately amorphous Al2O3 layers and Cu nanocrystals nucleated on the Al2O3 surface are formed, according to the PLD sequence. The Al2O3 deposited on the Cu nanocrystals fills in the space between them until they are completely buried, and subsequently, a continuous dense layer with a very flat surface (within 1 nm) is developed. The nucleation process of the nanocrystals and their resulting oblate ellipsoidal shape are discussed in terms of the role of the energetic species involved in the PLD process and the metal–oxide interface energy.
