    Notes: A radiometric analysis of the light coupled by optical fiber amplitude modulating extrinsic-type reflectance displacement sensors is presented. Uncut fiber sensors show the largest range but a smaller responsivity. Single cut fiber sensors exhibit an improvement in responsivity at the expense of range. A further increase in responsivity as well as a reduction in the operational range is obtained when the double cut sensor configuration is implemented. The double cut configuration is particularly suitable in applications where feedback action is applied to the moving reflector surface. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Recent advances in spatial data analysis are making their way into a variety of applied research settings. Once purely the domain of specialists, increased availability of both spatial data and the software with which to handle them, spatial analysis techniques are diffusing into other areas of research. This article first details the rationale and need for spatial considerations in hedonic price models and focuses on the link between the context of the housing market and the statistical considerations necessary when dealing with spatial data. These issues are then explored via an application to the housing market of Cuyahoga County, Ohio. It was found, first, that explicit modeling of space is not always warranted. One of our two models shows no substantial signs of spatial misspecification. However, in the second model, where diagnostic tests call for the explicit modeling of space, some drastic differences were found between the space-neglected model and the more correctly specified spatial hedonic model. This highlights the need to include spatial diagnostics as part of the standard model-fitting procedure for hedonic house price applications.

    Notes: Community expectations and research demonstrate that consumers play an important role in shaping services for women with breast cancer. Consumer contribution has been mandated recently in Victoria, Australia, to ensure the inclusion of consumer involvement in the planning and decision-making processes within health organizations. As part of the redevelopment of breast services in Victoria, Southern Health has been funded to plan local improvements to care co-ordination for women diagnosed with breast cancer in the southern metropolitan area of Melbourne. The establishment of effective consumer participation in breast services is an integral aspect of this project and a range of initiatives has been undertaken to achieve meaningful consumer involvement including the appointment of a consumer advisor; appointment of staff with extensive knowledge in women's health and community development to the project; establishment of a consumer reference group; and plans made to improve the receptivity of health service systems to consumer input. A preliminary evaluation of this ongoing project has indicated that a productive role for consumers in service practice review and policy and planning activities has been established and some change and engagement of staff has occurred. There is still work to be done to promote the involvement of a wider range of health professionals and to increase the level of trust between consumers and staff.

    Notes: We present tunneling experiments on Fe(001)/MgO(20 Å)/FeCo(001) single-crystal epitaxial junctions of high quality grown by sputtering and laser ablation. Tunnel magnetoresistance measurements give 60% at 30 K, to be compared with 13% obtained recently on (001)-oriented Fe/amorphous-Al2O3/FeCo tunnel junctions. This difference demonstrates that the spin polarization of tunneling electrons is not directly related to the density of states of the free metal surface—Fe(001) in this case—but depends on the actual electronic structure of the entire electrode/barrier system. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The structure and magnetic properties of Y2Al3Fe14−xMnx (x=0–12) compounds have been investigated by means of x-ray diffraction and magnetization measurements. The Y2Al3Fe14−xMnx compounds have a hexagonal Th2Ni17-type structure. Their unit-cell volumes increase slowly with increasing x first, then increases rapidly with the further increase of x. This implies that there exists a positive spontaneous volume magnetostriction in the magnetic state of Y2Al3Fe14−xMnx compounds. X-ray diffraction of the Y2Al3Fe11Mn3 compound from 150 to 300 K shows that there appears a negative coefficient of thermal expansion, α¯(approximate)−7.5×10−5/K, from 185 to 200 K. The Curie temperature and the saturation magnetization of these compounds show a rapid drop with increasing x. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The at-sea movement of marine mammals is an important component of their foraging ecology, but has been difficult to study. Geolocation timed-data recorders (GLTDRs) estimate positions using measured light level to calculate day length and local noon. It is well known that these location estimates are imprecise (mean error of 〉 1°). Satellite telemetry generally provides a more accurate, but also more expensive means of monitoring movement. We evaluated the accuracy and precision of geolocation positions by comparing these locations with satellite data from Service Argos for eight free-ranging gray seals (Halichoerns grypus) equipped with both a satellite-linked data recorder (SDR) and a GLTDR. Geolocation positions differed by 1,026.0 ± 292.28 km from the corresponding Argos locations. We developed an algorithm to correct geolocation positions by comparing surface water temperature (ST) and dive depth collected by GLTDRs with existing sea-surface temperature and bathymetry databases. The corrected positions were significantly closer (P 〈 0.025) to the Argos locations of these seals (94.2 ± 8.22 km). The original geolocation positions would have led to incorrect conclusions about the use of space by gray seals; however, the corrected positions can be reliably used to study the large-scale spatial distribution of individuals.

    Notes: An atomically detailed simulation method designed to be efficacious for modeling conduction properties of closed shell atoms or molecules resident at interfaces that was developed earlier is applied to a metal–dielectric interface of Ag–Xe. The effective mass of conduction electrons resident at Ag–Xe interfaces as a function of the number of layers of xenon present has been measured experimentally by the Harris group [J. D. McNeill, R. L. Lingle, Jr., R. E. Jordan, D. F. Padowitz, and C. B. Harris, J. Chem. Phys. 105, 3883 (1996)]. Here a simple yet effective theoretical model of the interface is developed and the effective mass that results is in quantitative agreement with the empirical measurements. The effective mass of a conduction electron is calculated by solving the Schrödinger–Bloch equation using Lanczos grid methods to obtain the Bloch wave vector (k) dependent energies. The metal is treated as a continuum within the effective mass approximation for the purpose of calculating the eigenenergies. To model the explicit potential energy functions, the electron–atom interaction is taken as a local pseudopotential that is fit to simultaneously reproduce the experimentally measured gas phase s-, p-, and d-wave scattering phase shifts. In simulating the interfacial environment the potential energy interaction between the electron and xenon atoms is modified to account for many-body polarization effects. This approach shows promise in modeling the conduction properties of more complex interfacial environments, including those of technological interest. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Organizational slack seems to have an ambiguous relationship with corporate greening. On the one hand, excess resources can be used to experiment with new environmental innovations, or potential green market segments. On the other, excess resources can be used to build corporate buffers against pressures for environmental improvement, such as large corporate environmental departments or environmental lobbying activity, and resist changes to the core of the organization. This paper begins to resolve these conflicting arguments by broadening the debate on organizational slack and corporate greening. It builds on recent empirical studies of slack and corporate greening, and recognizes the many potential roles that different types of slack may play in a dynamic decision–making context. Using a theoretical framework suggested by Bourgeois (1981), the paper systematizes and draws lessons from examples of the roles of slack encountered in a recent series of 35 interviews within UK public limited companies. It concludes that future treatments of slack and environmental management should incorporate a more holistic view of slack, which recognizes its dynamic, complex and often contradictory effects on decision–making in organizations.
