Notes: Abstract. A highly collimated beam of protons ( $\approx$ 1 MeV) entering the channel of a monocrystal film forms at a certain depth an extremely sharp (〈0.005 nm) and relatively long (some monolayers of the crystal) focusing area where the increase of the flux density can reach thousand times. Impinging atoms in this focusing area can undergo nuclear or atomic reactions with proper foreign dopants which disappear if the crystal is tilted from this position by only 10-3 radians. This effect can be called channeling superfocusing, in contrast to the ordinary fluxpeaking where the increase of flux density reaches only few times. Results are predicted by quantum mechanical model calculations and confirmed by channeling Monte Carlo simulations accounting for several properties of the real lattice.

Notes: Abstract We demonstrate ways to incorporate nondeterminism in a system designed to formalize the reasoning of agents concerning their abilities and the results of the actions that they may perform. We distinguish between two kinds of nondeterministic choice operators: one that expresses an internal choice, in which the agent decides what action to take, and one that expresses an external choice, which cannot be influenced by the agent. The presence of abilities in our system is the reason why the usual approaches towards nondeterminism cannot be used here. The semantics that we define for nondeterministic actions is based on the idea that composite actions are unravelled in the strings of atomic actions and tests that constitute them. The main notions used in defining this semantics are finite computation sequences and finite computation runs of actions. The results that we obtain meet our intuitions regarding events and abilities in the presence of nondeterminism.

Notes: Abstract From Pseudomonas putida CFML 90-51 – a hospital isolate – a pyoverdine was obtained which is characterized by the unusual linkage by the ε-rather than the α-amino group of Lys in the peptide chain. The structure elucidation by spectroscopic methods and degradation reactions is reported.

Notes: Abstract Micromachining technologies were established to fabricate microelectrode arrays and devices for interfacing parts of the central or peripheral nervous system in case of neuronal disorders. The devices were part of a neural prosthesis that allows simultaneous multichannel recording and multisite stimulation of neurons. Overcoming the brittle mechanics of silicon, we established a process technology to fabricate light-weighted and highly flexible polyimide based devices. Concerning the challenging housing demands close to the nerve to prevent mechanical induced nerve traumatization, we integrated interconnects to decouple the nerve interface from plugs and signal processing electronics. Hybrid integration with a new assembling technique—the MicroFlex interconnection (MFI)—has been applied for the connection of the flexible microsystems to silicon microelectronics. In this paper, we present different shapes and applications of the flexible electrodes: sieve electrodes for regeneration studies, cuff electrodes for interfacing peripheral nerves, and a retina implant for ganglion cell stimulation. The discussion is focused on electrode and material properties and the hybrid assembly of a fully implantable neural prosthesis.

Notes: Abstract Specialized to the Lie series based perturbation method of Kirchgraber and Stiefel (1978) a new computer algebra package called ANALYTOS has been developed for constructing analytical orbital theories either in noncanonical or canonical form. We present results on the (extended) Main Problem of orbital theory of artificial earth satellites and related issues. The order of the solutions achieved is generally one order higher than those known from literature. Moreover, the analytical orbits have been checked succesfully against precise numerical ephemerides.

Notes: Abstract In Dynamical Systems, Birkhoff gave a clear formulation of a cross section, suggested a possible generalization to cross sections with boundary, and raised the question of whether or not such cross sections exist in the three-body problem. In this work, we explicitly develop Birkhoff's notion of a generalized cross section, formulate homological necessary conditions for the existence of a cross section or generalized cross section, and show that these conditions are not satisfied in the three-body problem.

Notes: Abstract. The 110,112 Rh and 114,116 Ag nuclei have been produced as fission fragments in the fusion reaction 18 O+208 Pb at 85 MeV. Their level schemes have been built from gamma-rays detected using the Euroball IV array. High-spin states of these neutron-rich nuclei have been identified for the first time. The yrast structures consist of rotational bands in which the odd proton occupies the $\pi g_{9/2}$ sub-shell and the odd neutron the $\nu h_{11/2}$ sub-shell. The evolution of the $\pi g_{9/2} \otimes \nu h_{11/2}$ band structure is analyzed as a function of the neutron number.
