Description: This report details a computational fluid dynamics study conducted in support of the phase II development of the X-33 vehicle. Aerodynamic and aeroheating predictions were generated for the X-33 vehicle at both flight and wind-tunnel test conditions using two finite-volume, Navier-Stokes solvers. Aerodynamic computations were performed at Mach 6 and Mach 10 wind-tunnel conditions for angles of attack from 10 to 50 with body-flap deflections of 0 to 20. Additional aerodynamic computations were performed over a parametric range of free-stream conditions at Mach numbers of 4 to 10 and angles of attack from 10 to 50. Laminar and turbulent wind-tunnel aeroheating computations were performed at Mach 6 for angles of attack of 20 to 40 with body-flap deflections of 0 to 20. Aeroheating computations were performed at four flight conditions with Mach numbers of 6.6 to 8.9 and angles of attack of 10 to 40. Surface heating and pressure distributions, surface streamlines, flow field information, and aerodynamic coefficients from these computations are presented, and comparisons are made with wind-tunnel data.

Description: Post-Scan Interactive Data Display (PSIDD) III is a user-oriented Windows-based system that facilitates the display and comparison of ultrasonic contact data. The system is optimized to compare ultrasonic measurements made at different locations within a material or at different stages of material degradation. PSIDD III provides complete analysis of the primary wave forms in the time and frequency domains along with the calculation of several frequency dependent properties including Phase Velocity and Attenuation Coefficient and several frequency independent properties, like the Cross Correlation Velocity. The system allows image generation on all of the frequency dependent properties at any available frequency (limited by the bandwidth used in the scans) and on any of the frequency independent properties. From ultrasonic contact scans, areas of interest on an image can be studied with regard to underlying raw waveforms and derived ultrasonic properties by simply selecting the point on the image. The system offers various modes of in-depth comparison between scan points. Up to five scan points can be selected for comparative analysis at once. The system was developed with Borland Delphi software (Visual Pascal) and is based on a SQL database. It is ideal for classification of material properties, or location of microstructure variations in materials.

Description: The fourth quarter delivery, FY'01 for this RTOP is a Property-Based Testing (PBT), 'Tester's Assistant' (TA). The TA tool is to be used to check compiled and pre-compiled code for potential security weaknesses that could be exploited by hackers. The TA Instrumenter, implemented mostly in C++ (with a small part in Java), parsels two types of files: Java and TASPEC. Security properties to be checked are written in TASPEC. The Instrumenter is used in conjunction with the Tester's Assistant Specification (TASpec)execution monitor to verify the security properties of a given program.

Description: In this paper we discuss the methods developed for the production of the INTEGRAL/SPI instrument response. The response files were produced using a suite of Monte Carlo simulation software developed at NASA/GSFC based on the GEANT-3 package available from CERN. The production of the INTEGRAL/SPI instrument response also required the development of a detailed computer mass model for SPI. We discuss ow extensive investigations into methods to reduce both the computation time and storage requirements for the SPI response. We also discuss corrections to the simulated response based on our comparison of ground and infiight Calibration data with MGEANT simulations.

Description: The recently released Nascap-2k, version 2.0, three-dimensional computer code models interactions between spacecraft surfaces and low-earth-orbit, geosynchronous, auroral, and interplanetary plasma environments. It replaces the earlier three-dimensional spacecraft interactions codes NASCAP/GEO, NASCAP/LEO, POLAR, and DynaPAC. Nascap-2k has improved numeric techniques, a modern user interface, and a simple, interactive satellite surface definition module (Object ToolKit). We establish the accuracy of Nascap-2k both by comparing computed currents and potentials with analytic results and by comparing Nascap-2k results with published calculations using the earlier codes. Nascap-2k predicts Langmuir-Blodgett or Parker-Murphy current collection for a nearly spherical (100 surfaces) satellite in a short Debye length plasma depending on the absence or presence of a magnetic field. A low fidelity (in geometry and time) Nascap-2k geosynchronous charging calculation gives the same results as the corresponding low fidelity NASCAP/GEO calculation. A high fidelity calculation (using the Nascap-2k improved geometry and time stepping capabilities) gives higher potentials, which are more consistent with typical observations. Nascap-2k predicts the same current as a function of applied potential as was observed and calculated by NASCAP/LEO for the SPEAR I rocket with a bipolar sheath. A Nascap-2k DMSP charging calculation gives results similar to those obtained using POLAR and consistent with observation.
