Notizen: The carboxyvinyl transfer from phosphoenolpyruvate to UDP-N-acetylglucosamine is the first committed step in the pathway of peptidoglycan formation. This crucial reaction for bacterial cell growth is catalysed by the MurA enzymes. Gram-negative bacteria carry one murA gene, whereas in a subgroup of Gram-positive bacteria two separate paralogues, MurAA and MurAB, exist. This study provides evidence that in the Gram-positive bacterium Bacillus subtilis, the MurAA protein is specifically degraded by the ClpCP protease. This Clp-dependent degradation is especially enhanced upon entry into stationary phase, thus ensuring an immediate growth arrest due to stalled murein biosynthesis. The MurAA protein can therefore be addressed as a target of Clp-dependent regulatory proteolysis such as the transcriptional regulators CtsR, ComK, Spx in B. subtilis, CtrA in Caulobacter crescentus or RpoS in Escherichia coli. Taking into account all other known regulatory targets of ATP-dependent proteases, MurAA of B. subtilis represents the first example of a metabolic enzyme which is a unique regulatory substrate of Clp-dependent proteolysis. Its function as a regulatory metabolic checkpoint resembles that of homoserine trans-succinylase (MetA) in E. coli which is similarly ATP-dependently degraded.

Notizen: Mackerel icefish have a widespread distribution in the Atlantic and Indian Ocean sectors of the low-Antarctic region. Biological characteristics differ considerably between populations in the southern Scotia Arc and those living further to the north. Fish living in the north mature 1 year earlier than in the south. They have a much shorter life span and die after they have spawned two to three times. The number of eggs produced per gram of body mass is higher in the north. Stocks have declined in most parts of the distributional range due to the impact of fishing and due to natural causes. Increases in populations of Antarctic fur seals at South Georgia and parts of the Indian Ocean appear to have led to increased predation on stocks of icefish. Shifts in hydrological regimes in the northern part of the distributional range have either started to lead or will lead to deteriorating living conditions for mackerel icefish in the near future. Fish stock assessment needs to take these constraints into consideration when providing advice on total allowable catches for fisheries management.

Notizen: [Auszug] Experiments were performed on cats anaesthetized with nembutal or chloralose-urethane. Parasympathetic reflex influences were excluded by acute vagotomy. Intestinal motility was measured by means of a continuous recording of the luminal changes in an intestinal segment, isolated in situ but with ...

Notizen: [Auszug] Little appears to be known of a third longitudinally placed elastic fibrous ligament lying between the centra and the dorsal aorta, which is firmly attached to the basioceipitals in front, and passes to the end of the tail through the haemal arches. Burne in 1909 described it in the shad, Alosa ...

Notizen: [Auszug] So far, no conclusions have been reached as to the ontogenetic relationship between receptor cells and their innervation. Some consider this system consists of two separate units2-mesodermal receptor cells which are eventually innervated-while others suggest a purely nervous organization in which ...

Notizen: [Auszug] The issue of possible receptor specialization has been examined histologically. A number of workers have reported differing types of receptor cells in the carotid body of several species6"11. Few observations are, however, available concerning the distribution or morphological relationships of such ...

Notizen: [Auszug] Minutes Using peroxide-free 'Analar' ether, thrice distilled in all-glass apparatus, we have obtained from the water-extract of beet seeds an unsaturated yellow oil, which acts as a powerful germination inhibitor when tested on cress (Lepidium sativum) and other seeds. The inhibitor seems to exert ...
