    Notes: Results of the analysis for dry-matter, nitrogen and major base content of 9 silage effluents obtained from farm silos and 3 effluents from experimental tower silos are presented. The mean values obtained for the principal plant nutrients in the 12 effluents examined were 0·19% N, 0·037% P and 0·38% K. The results indicate that effluents may be a useful source of plant nutrients, particularly when undiluted with rainwater, and that, in general, silage effluents appear to be superior to liquid manure in manurial value.

    Notes: Enrichment and isolation of methyl chloride utilising bacteria from a variety of pristine terrestrial, freshwater, estuarine and marine environments resulted in the detection of six new methyl chloride utilising Hyphomicrobium strains, strain CMC related to Aminobacter spp. and to two previously isolated methyl halide utilising bacteria CC495 and IMB-1, and a Gram-positive isolate SAC-4 phylogenetically related to Nocardioides spp. All the pristine environments sampled for enrichment resulted in the successful isolation of methyl chloride utilising organisms.

    Notes: Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) is often grown on alkaline zinc (Zn)-deficient soils where reductions in yield and grain quality are frequently reported. Currently, the use of Zn-based fertilizer along with Zn-deficiency-tolerant genotypes is considered the most thorough approach for cropping the Zn-deficient soils; however, developing or breeding genotypes with higher Zn efficiency requires a good understanding of the inheritance of tolerance to Zn deficiency. This study was conducted to determine genetic control of this trait in barley. Two parental cultivars ('Skiff, moderately tolerant; and ‘Forrest’, sensitive), 185 F2 plants, and 48 F2-derived F3 families from this cross were screened to determine inheritance of tolerance to Zn deficiency using a visual score of deficiency symptoms. The segregation ratios observed indicated that greater tolerance to Zn deficiency in ‘Skiff compared with ‘Forrest’ at the seedling stage is controlled by a single gene with no dominance. The results also indicate that visual scores are useful for genetic analysis of tolerance to Zn deficiency.

    Notes: Wet mass and water content of four lots of whole eggs did not change throughout embryonic development of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss. Eggs in all four lots accumulated Na+. Eggs in lots 2 and 4 also accumulated Ca2+ and Cl-, whereas eggs in lot 1 showed no significant change in Ca2+ or Cl- and eggs in lot 3 showed no change in Cl-and a small loss of Ca2+. Although the Na+ content of embryonic tissues increases in the later stages of development, the yolk sac content remained constant, indicating uptake of Na+ from the environment. Na+ uptake by whole eggs was non-saturable, consistent with diffusion of Na+ across the chorion into the perivitelline fluid. Na+ uptake in dechorionated embryos was saturable, as was Ca2+ uptake by both whole eggs and dechorionated embryos, consistent with active uptake or facilitated diffusion mechanisms at the surface of embryos. Very low Ca2+ uptake rates in dechorionated embryos suggest that the Ca2+ uptake mechanism is not fully developed until after hatching.

    Notes: : Inactivation of 4 microorganisms in orange juice was investigated in a 100 L/h flowing pulsed electric field (PEF) system. Electric field levels of 30 kV/cm and 50 kV/cm were applied, and Leuconostoc mesenteroides, E. coli, and Listeria innocua were inactivated by as much as 5 log cycles at 30 kV/cm and 50 °C. Saccharomyces cerevisiae ascospores were the least susceptible to PEF at all treatment levels, and a maximum of 2.5 log reduction was achieved at 50 kV/cm and 50 °C. Both electric field levels were effective in inactivating microorganisms at temperatures below standard thermal treatment, however, the number of pulses applied was particularly important in inactivation.

    Notes: Planning the provision of a future water supply depends upon forecasts of likely demand. Existing forecasting techniques suffer from a lack of spatially relevant information on likely trends in the micro-components of demand. At a sub-regional level, current approaches also understate between-area variability. A static micro-simulation model is described, which makes more efficient use of existing data in producing forecasts of domestic water consumption. Spatially detailed synthetic microdata are reweighted towards level population estimates which are derived from official Government population projections. A 30% increase in domestic consumption between 1991 and 2025 is forecast for the Yorkshire Water region, three-quarters of which is attributable to changes in consumer behaviour.

    Notes: Knowledge of future demand is essential for promoting sustainability in water resources, informing decisions over the allocation of water between people and the environment. Improved econometric models of non-household water demand are presented, which have been developed for the Yorkshire Water region, providing annual demand forecasts to the year 2010 disaggregated with reference to the Standard Industrial Classification. Increases of 0.44–1.0% per annum are forecast, mainly driven by service sector demand. Water companies and regulators cannot influence economic activity, but have the ability to manage demand using price controls. Waste minimisation also offers the potential to offset forecast increases, if widely adopted. Current application of price controls act to increase demand, counter to the goal of environmental sustainability; therefore it is concluded that, within the UK water industry, competition should be focused on levels of service and environmental-impact measures, rather than on price.

    Notes: Biological spoilage of non-carbonated orange drink is caused mainly by yeasts that are not inhibited by preservatives at permitted levels. A stain that distinguishes living from dead yeast cells was used to develop a technique that detected yeast growth within 24–36 hr of the addition of one viable yeast cell per 190 ml of pasteurized orange drink.
