Description / Table of Contents:
Summary In 1963, we observed a disease of potato tubers comparable with the bacterial dry rot recently described in Great Britain. The purpose of this work is the study of the symptoms, their origin and the causal organism. Means of control are considered. The bacterial flora which was isolated from the lesions is nearly similar to that described in the literature. It is of interest that we have isolated from the same sample, several strains ofErwinia carotovora, that are comparable to the varietiestypicum, aroïdeae and probablyatroseptica. The pathogenic strains show identical pectolytic properties, and reproduce same symptoms. Their separation into varieties is based on biochemical criteria only (Tables 1, 2, 3). The results of inoculations confirm that the bacteria penetrate by way of the lenticels. Such infection is probably aided by the lack of suberization of the cells of the lenticels, particularly in tubers which have not reached maturity at the time of harvesting, as a result of unfavorable climatic conditions (rainy summer, poorly-aerated soil). Study of the proper conditions for the growing of potatoes should make it possible to prevent the disease.
