    Notes: This study evaluated the effects of fish oil (FO) replacement by vegetable oils [soybean oil (SO), rapeseed oil (RO), linseed oil (LO)] and subsequent feeding with FO on the liver morphology of sea bream. A short-term trial (3 months) and long-term trial (6 months) were carried out feeding sea bream with the following experimental diets: FO100%; SO60% + FO40%; RO60% +FO40%; LO60% + FO40%; SO + RO +LO60% + FO40%. Finally, all groups from the long-term trial were fed with FO100% for 95 days (washout period). Liver samples were taken for histological and biochemical studies. In both the short- and long-term trials, livers of sea bream fed LO60% and SO + RO + LO60% showed a similar hepatic morphology to that observed in fish fed FO100%. In contrast, sea bream fed SO60% showed an intense steatosis, with foci of swollen hepatocytes containing numerous lipid vacuoles. After the washout period, a considerable reduction of the cytoplasmic vacuolation and the lipid vacuole accumulation were observed in the livers of fish fed the different experimental diets. The results of this study suggested that the type of non-essential fatty acid, characteristic of vegetable oils, induces the appearance of steatosis in the following order: linoleic acid 〉 linolenic acid 〉 oleic acid. However, the liver alterations found during the experimental periods with vegetable oils are reversible when the fish are re-fed with a balanced diet (FO100%), indicating the non-pathological character of these histological changes.

    Notes: Dietary supplementation of phospholipids seems to be extremely important to promote growth and survival in fish larvae. Several studies also suggest the importance of n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) rich phospholipids to further enhance larval performance. In the present study, four different diets were formulated in order to compare the effect of total dietary polar lipid contents, of soya bean lecithin supplementation and of feeding n-3 HUFA in the form of neutral or polar lipids on ingestion and incorporation of labelled fatty acids in gilthead seabream larvae. These diets were prepared including radiolabelled fatty acids from palmitoyl phosphatidylcholine, glycerol trioleate, free oleic acid (FOA) and free eicosapentaenoic acid (FEPA) and were fed to 25 day-old larvae. The results of these experiments showed that the elevation of the dietary polar lipid levels significantly improved microdiet ingestion, regardless of the origins of the polar lipids. This effect caused an improved incorporation of phosphatidylcholine fatty acids to the larval polar and total lipids (TL) as the dietary polar lipids increased. Nevertheless, a better incorporation of fatty acids from dietary polar lipids in comparison with that of fatty acids from dietary triglycerides into larval lipids was found in gilthead seabream, whereas a better utilization of dietary triglycerides fatty acids than dietary free fatty acids could also be observed. Besides, the presence of n-3 HUFA rich neutral lipids (NL) significanlty increased the absorption efficiency of labelled oleic acid from dietary triglycerides, but the presence of n-3 HUFA rich polar lipids, particularly improved the incorporation of FEPA. This fatty acid was preferentially incorporated into larval polar lipids in comparison with FOA.

    Notes: Due to its traditionally good availability, digestibility and high content of n − 3 HUFA, fish oil is the main lipid source in fish feeds. However, world demand for this product has grown significantly in recent years, whereas its production, based on fisheries landings, is static. The purpose of the present study was to assess the effect of partial replacement of fish oil in compound diets for gilthead seabream and seabass, by several vegetable oil sources, on growth, dietary fatty acid utilization and flesh quality. Five iso-energetic and isoproteic experimental diets were formulated (25% lipid content). Fish oil was the only added lipid source in the control (FO) diet, and it was included in the other experimental diets at a level high enough (40% of FO diet) to keep the n − 3 HUFA levels well over 3% in order to cover the essential fatty acid requirements of these species. Fish oil was replaced by soyabean oil (SO), rapeseed oil (RO) and linseed oil (LO) or a mixture (Mix) of them. Feed intake in all dietary groups was in the range of results obtained for commercial diets in both species, and growth and feed utilization were very good. The results show that, providing a minimum content of essential fatty acids in the diet, it is possible to replace up to 60% of the fish oil by SO, LO and RO or a mixture of them in diets for seabream and seabass, without compromising fish growth. Fatty acid composition of liver and muscle reflected that of the diet, but utilization of dietary lipids differed between these two tissues and was also different for the different fatty acids. Despite reduction in dietary saturated fatty acids by the inclusion of vegetable oils, their levels in fish liver were as high as in fish fed the fish oil diet, whereas, in muscle, levels were reduced according to that in the diet. Linoleic and linolenic acids were accumulated in the liver proportionally to their levels in the diet, suggesting a lower oxidation of these fatty acids in comparison to other 18C fatty acids. Regarding eicosapentaenoic acid (20 : 5n − 3; EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (22 : 6n − 3; DHA) and arachidonic acid (20 : 4n − 6; ARA), these essential fatty acids were reduced in the liver at a similar rate, whereas DHA was preferentially retained in the muscle in comparison with the other fatty acids, denoting a higher oxidation particularly of EPA, in the muscle. Some other PUFA increased despite their low dietary levels in seabream fed LO diets and in seabass fed SO diet, suggesting the stimulation of delta-6 and delta-5 desaturase activity in marine fish. Despite differences in fatty acid composition, fillet of fish fed vegetable oils was very well accepted by trained judges when assessed cooked.

    Notes: It has been noted in the literature on inter-organisational relationships that long-term cooperation is more effective in a business environment characterised by interdependence, commitment and trust. However, there is not enough knowledge about the effect of interdependence in different trust contexts. This paper draws on several theoretical contributions to examine the interaction of economic and social factors as determinants of industrial buyer-seller relationships. In order to test the proposed hypotheses information was collected relating to supplier-manufacturer relationships in the automotive industry. As expected, the empirical results indicate that trust moderates the effect of interdependence on the relational orientation of the exchange in that it enhances the relational orientation perceived by both manufacturer and supplier. A discrepancy was also found between suppliers' and manufacturers' relationship perceptions. The theoretical and managerial implications of the results are also discussed.

    Notes: Vibrio cholerae WavB protein showed some similarity to WaaE of Klebsiella pneumoniae and Serratia marcescens. From previous data obtained by us and by chemical analyses of a K. pneumoniae non-polar waaE mutant from strain 889 (08:K69), its lipopolysaccharide (LPS) core structure has recently been elucidated. We demonstrated that WaaE is a β-1,4-glucosyltransferase involved in the transfer of a glucose residue to the l-glycero-d-manno-heptose I in the LPS inner core. Complementation of this K. pneumoniae non-polar waaE mutant with gene wavB obtained, either from V. cholerae or V. mimicus, showed a full complementation either by chemical studies or by a biological test (susceptibility to non-immune serum). The V. cholerae wavB gene is located in a putative core oligosaccharide (OS) gene cluster and the V. cholerae OS core structure showed the same β-1,4-glucose residue attached to Hep I as is observed for the K. pneumoniae 889 OS core structure. No other glucose residue is found in the ligosaccharide core structure of K. pneumoniae 889. We concluded that WavB protein is able to perform the same function as WaaE.

    Notes: Biofilm formation in Escherichia coli is a process that involves slow growth and stress conditions where several molecular signals and growth phase regulated genes are involved. Here we show that rpoS mutant strains (defective in the stress regulator σS) exhibit an increased production of biofilm, especially in the exponential phase of growth. Our results indicate that rpoS mutants produce an extracellular factor that promotes the production of biofilm during the exponential phase of growth. Thus, RpoS plays an important role in the regulation of the amount and initiation of biofilm formation in E. coli.

    Notes: A transposon mutant from Aeromonas hydrophila AH-3 was obtained which was highly resistant to opsonophagocytosis. The mutation was identified in the ftsE gene and we characterised the operon ftsY, E and X from this bacterium. These genes, as in enteric bacteria, are neighbours to rpoH. The A. hydrophila ftsE and X genes were fully able to complement Escherichia coli ftsE mutants, and also complement the opsonophagocytosis-resistant phenotype of the A. hydrophila mutant strain. This phenotype seems to be related to the filamentous phenotype at 37°C exhibited by the A. hydrophila ftsE mutant.

    Notes: Aeromonas hydrophila AH-3 strains carrying mutations in mgtE, which encodes a Mg2+ and Co2+ transport system, showed a 50% reduction of in vitro adherence to HEp-2 cells, a reduction in swarming in semisolid swarming agar, and decrease in biofilm formation of over 60% in comparison to the wild-type strain. The cloned A. hydrophila mgtE expressed from a plasmid complements a Salmonella typhimurium strain deleted for all Mg2+ transporters both phenotypically and by measurement of 57Co2+ uptake. Likewise, plasmid-borne mgtE was able to complement the changes observed in A. hydrophila mgtE mutants. We suggest that MgtE and thus Mg2+ and possibly Co2+ have a role in A. hydrophila related to their swarming ability and related consequences such as adherence and biofilm formation.

    Notes: We have studied the exopolysaccharides (EPS) from a new group of moderately halophilic bacteria belonging to the genus Halomonas. The quantity of EPS produced, its chemical composition and physical properties depend greatly upon the bacterial strain. The majority of the polymers produced viscous solutions and/or emulsified different hydrocarbon compounds. The most interesting strain, S-30, produced EPS at 2.8 g/l with a maximum viscosity of 23.5 Pa·5 and exhibited pseudoplastic behavior. This EPS emulsified five hydrocarbons more efficiently than did four control surfactants tested. Its monosaccharide composition was glucose:galactose:manose:glucuronic acid in equimolar ratio. Some two-thirds of the strains tested emulsified crude oil better than control surfactants did. There are many potential industrial applications for polysaccharides with these qualities.
