Notes: Studies were made of the influence of hydrostatic pressure on the helix-coil transitions of poly (A + U) and poly (A + 2U). The results were analyzed by a thermodynamic treatment which emphasized the cooperative aspect of the transitions. The helix-to-coil volume changes were found to be small and negative indicating pressure stabilization of the coil form. The significance of the results with respect to other denaturation measurements was discussed.

Notes: Solutions of calf thymus DNA have been degraded in the presence of vibrating air bubbles in ultrasonic fields of low power which would not normally induce ultrasonic cavitation. The DNA was degraded to a limiting intrinsic viscosity, after which further irradiation by ultrasound had little or no effect. This limiting intrinsic viscosity decreased with increase in the ultrasonic intensity. Previously developed theories have-been adapted to calculate the maximum velocity gradient associated with the streaming of the solution around such vibrating air bubbles. The tensile force which is induced and which acts on the DNA has been calculated on the basis of current theories of degradation by hydrodynamic shear. These calculations indicate that the degradation of the DNA by ultrasound under conditions of “stable cavitation” is mainly the result of the shearing forces engendered in the solution around the oscillating bubbles.

Notes: An infrared method has been developed for the determination of the isotacticity of polypropylene in the 90-100% range. The method requires the annealing of thin films at 165-167°C. for 3 hr. in an inert atmosphere, followed by slow cooling to room temperature. For approximate answers the ratio of the intensity of the 10.00 μ band to that of the 10.27 μ band can be reported as the fraction of isotactic material. Better results are obtained, however, by using Figure 2 as a calibration curve and reading the values from it.

Notes: The plastics industry is now coming to realize that copolymers are unique thermoplastics which have broad areas of application. It is believed that ethylene-methyl acrylate copolymers of 2 melt index may be extrusion coated to paper by a cap-coat process or by use of a chill roll with an adhesive coating. Copolymers of ethylene and vinyl monomers can be made into film by the same methods used for polyethylene. Methyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate copolymers may be processed on a wide range of molding equipment. Table VII in the article gives a list of applications for each polymer, along with expected physical properties.

Notes: The effect of 30-49 wt-% nitrile group content on the properties of copolymers is demonstrated. The nitrile is furnished by either acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile. The exceptional resistance of such high nitrile content resins to the passage of gases and of solvents is shown and variations therein demonstrated for different comonomers. Transparent, tough, grafted polymers of good color are described which retain these properties. These qualities, combined with low second-order transition temperatures and adequate heat deflection temperatures, provide polymers of interest wherever containment and barrier are desired. Bottles, thermoformed containers, etc., could benefit from the use of some of the polymers described.

Notes: Detailed characterization of the low molecular weight polyols used as intermediates in rigid polyurethane foam production has not been feasible to date. Gas-liquid chromatography of the trimethylsilyl ether derivatives of the polyols now offers a more complete picture of polyol composition, particularly with regard to the molecular weight distribution. The data may be interpreted on a semiquantitative basis. The study of processing variables in polyol manufacture, detection of impurities and analysis of unknown polyols or those based on mixed initiators may all be facilitated by use of this GLC technique.

Notes: The monomer α-cyanostyrene polymerized at a very slow rate under the influence of free-radical initiators. Rapid polymerization to high molecular weight material was achieved by using anionic initiators (tri-n-butylphosphine and tetrakisdimethylaminotitanium). The polymer made at -78°C. was colorless, fusible, soluble, and had a number-average molecular weight of over 5,000. The polymer prepared at 0°C. was brown, insoluble, and infusible. None of the polymer showed order in the x-ray diagram. The rate of dimerization of α-cyanostyrene under a wide variety of conditions was measured. Two new derivatives of the intermediate, 3-(N,N-dimethylamino)-2-phenylpropionitrile were prepared: the methiodide, m.p. 242-245°C. (decomp.), and the picrate, m.p. 116.5-117.5°C.

Description: We have searched for unresolved X-ray sources in the vicinity of two rich clusters of galaxies: Abell 1995 (A1995) and MS 0451.6-0305 (MS0451), using the Chandra X-ray observatory. We detected significantly more unresolved sources around A1995 than expected based on the number of X-ray sources to the same flux limit detected in deep Chandra observations of blank fields. Previous studies have also found excess X-ray sources in the vicinity of several nearby clusters of galaxies using ROSAT (Roentgen Satellite), and recently in more distant (z is approximately 0.5) clusters (RXJ0030 and 3C295) using Chandra. In contrast, we detect only 14 unresolved X-ray sources near MS0451, which is consistent with the number expected from a cluster-free background. We determine the luminosity functions of the extra sources under the assumption that they are at the distance of their respective clusters. The characteristic luminosity of the extra sources around A1995 must be an order of magnitude fainter than that of the extra sources around RXJ0030 and 3C295. The apparent lack of extra sources around MS0451 is consistent with its greater distance and the same characteristic luminosity as the A1995 sources. Hardness ratios suggest that, on average, the extra sources in A1995 may have harder spectra than those of RXJ0030 and 3C295. These results indicate that different classes of objects may dominate in different clusters, perhaps depending on the formation history and/or dynamical state of the accompanying cluster.

Description: Following the detection of strong TeV gamma ray flares from the BL Lac object 1 ES 1959+650 with the Whipple 10 m Cerenkov telescope on 2002 May 16 and 17, we performed intensive target of opportunity radio, optical, X-ray, and TeV ?ray observations from 2002 May 18 to August 14. Observations with the X-ray telescope RossiX-Ray Timing Explorer and the Whipple and HEGRA gamma-ray telescopes revealed several strong flares, enabling us to sensitively test the X-ray--gamma-ray flux correlation properties. Although the X-ray and gamma-ray fluxes seemed to be correlated in general, we found an orphan gamma-ray flare that was not accompanied by an X-ray flare. While we detected optical flux variability with the Boltwood and Abastumani observatories, the data did not give evidence for a correlation of the optical flux variability with the observed X-ray and 7-ray flares. Within statistical errors of about 0.03 Jy at 14.5 GHz and 0.05 Jy at 4.8 GHz, the radio fluxes measured with the University of Michigan Radio Astronomy Observatory stayed constant throughout the campaign; the mean values agreed well with the values measured on 2002 May 7 and June 7 at 4.9 and 15 GHz with the Very Large Array and at 4.8 GHz with archival flux measurements. After describing in detail the radio, optical, X-ray and gamma-ray light curves, and spectral energy distributions (SEDs), we present initial modeling of the SED with a simple synchrotron self- Compton model. With the addition of another TeV blazar with good broadband data, we consider the set of all TeV blazars, to begin to look for a connection of the jet properties to the properties of the central accreting black hole thought to drive the jet. Remarkably, the temporal and special X-ray and gamma-ray emission characteristics of TeV blazars are very similar, even though the mass estimates of their central black holes differ by up to 1 order of magnitude.
