Notes: The ability for biomass colonization of four porous mineral microcarriers (sepiolite, clay, pozzolana and foam glass-Poraver), was studied and related to their surface properties. The surface hydrophobicity of the mineral carriers was a more important factor influencing colonization by the anaerobic consortium than was surface charge. It was possible to correlate linearly the degree of hydrophobicity with the biomass retention capacity. Although the thermodynamic theory did not explain adhesion, an increase in cell attachment was directly related to the decrease of the positive values of the free energy of adhesion. Surface roughness, porosity and the amount of surface Mg2+, were also determinant factors in bacterial immobilization. However a great biomass accumulation can originate a decrease in biological activity due to mass transfer limitations. Journal of Industrial Microbiology & Biotechnology (2000) 24, 181–186.

Notes: Abstract The effects of increased air pressure in a culture of the thermophilic microorganism Thermus sp. RQ-1 were investigated. Cell growth dependence on oxygen supply was investigated in a fermenter at atmospheric pressure. Total oxygen depletion from the medium for low values of k La was observed during the exponential growth phase. It was possible with this strain to enhance the oxygen transfer rate by increasing the air pressure. Cell productivity was improved by pressurisation up to 0.56 MPa for batch cultivation; and an induction of the antioxidant enzymes, superoxide dismutase and catalase, was observed with the rise in pressure. Cell pre-cultivation under pressurised conditions conferred to the cells more resistance to an exposure to hydrogen peroxide and more sensitivity to paraquat (methyl viologen). The usefulness of bioreactor pressurisation on the cultivation of Thermus sp. RQ-1 was demonstrated for fed-batch operation, with the attainment of higher cell densities. A two-fold increase in cell mass productivity was obtained by the use of hyperbaric air (0.5 MPa). With the pressurisation of the head-space in the reactor, it was also possible to eliminate the loss of liquid by evaporation, which amounted to more than 10% at 70 °C and atmospheric pressure.

Notes: Abstract. The aim of this paper is to study the implementation of an efficient and reliable technique for shape optimization of solids, based on general nonlinear programming algorithms. We also study the practical behaviour for this kind of applications of a quasi-Newton algorithm, based on the Feasible Direction Interior Point Method for nonlinear constrained optimization. The optimal shape of the solid is obtained iteratively. At each iteration, a new shape is generated by B-spline curves and a new mesh is automatically generated. The control point coordinates are given by the design variables. Several illustrative two-dimensional examples are solved in a very efficient way. We conclude that the present approach is simple to formulate and to code and that our optimization algorithm is appropriate for this problem.

Notes: Abstract Ag-containing polyethyleneoxide (PEO)-like thin films have been deposited in Radio Frequency Glow Discharges fed with vapors of diethyleneglycol-dimethylether and argon. Proper experimental conditions have been utilized in order to fragment the monomer in the glow and, at the same time, sputter Ag from the silver RF cathode of the reactor, in a way that polyethyleneoxide(PEO)-like coatings with embedded Ag clusters have been deposited at the ground electrode. The compostion of the coatings has been investigated by means of different techniques; the plasma process has been investigated by means of Actinometric Optical Emission Spectroscopy. A correlation has been found between the amount of silver embedded in the coatings and that sputtered in the discharge, monitored by actinometry, that could eventually be utilized to control in situ the deposition process.

Notes: Abstract: The geometric structures, energetics and electronic properties of the recently discovered BN nanocones are investigated using first-principles calculations based on the density-functional theory. We have proposed one particular structure for BN nanocones associated with the 240° disclination, derived by the extraction of four 60° segments, presenting as characteristic four pentagons at the apex and termination in two atoms. The cones are simulated by three clusters containing 58 B plus N atoms and additional 12 H atoms to saturate the dangling bonds at the edge. The most stable configuration is obtained when the two terminating atoms are one B and one N. For the cases where the two terminating atoms are of the same kind, the tip with B atoms is determined to have lower binding energy than with N atoms. The local densities of states of these BN nanocones are investigated and sharp states are found in the regions close (below and above) to the Fermi energy.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we present two new heuristic procedures for the Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem (CVRP). The first one solves the problem from scratch, while the second one uses the information provided by a strong linear relaxation of the original problem. This second algorithm is designed to be used in a branch and cut approach to solve to optimality CVRP instances. In both heuristics, the initial solution is improved using tabu search techniques. Computational results over a set of known instances, most of them with a proved optimal solution, are given.
