Notes: This paper deals with some new methods for synthesis of the polymeric semiconductors by conjugated reactions and also with electrophysical properties of the polymers. Elimination of hydrogen halides from α,β-dihalo derivatives by bases (calcium oxide or tertiary amines) yields polymers with conjugated bonds. The reaction proceeds at 200-300°C. under atmospheric or elevated pressures, acetylenes being the intermediates. α,β-Dihalo compounds with calcium carbide above 150°C. produce polyacetylenic copolymers by elimination of two moles of hydrogen halide, also by generating acetylene from calcium carbide. The identical reaction (elimination of water) was observed between carbonyl compounds and calcium carbide. Elimination of water from monoand bifunctional phenols in the presence of zinc chloride under pressure above 200°C. yields polyphenylenes and polyhydroxyphenylenes, dehydrobenzene (benzyne) and hydroxybenzyne being intermediates. The polyhydroxyphenylenes prepared have a degree of polymerization from 4-5 to several thousand and are of interest as intermediates for thermostable resins, inhibitors etc. Linear polycyanamide and polycyanic acid were first prepared by polycondensation of urea with ammonium bicarbonate in the presence of zinc chloride. Analogous polymers were obtained from the ring-opening polymerization of melamine and cyanuric acid. The polymers show good semiconductor and ion-exchange properties. Polycondensation of ketones with ammonium bicarbonate also gave conjugated polymers. Thus, organometallic polymers were prepared from acetyl- and diacetyl ferrocene. We have also studied electrophysical, magnetic, and catalytic properties of the conjugated polymers prepared by the new methods. The electrical conductivity of the best specimens ranged from 10-3 to 10-6 ohm-1 cm.-1; the number of electrons unpaired was 1018-1019 spins/g.

Notes: The degradation behavior of mixtures of polystyrene and poly(methyl methacrylate) in the form of thin films cast from a solution containing both polymers has been compared with that of the individual polymers and of copolymers of the same monomer pair by means of thermal volatilization analysis (TVA) together with product analysis by gas-liquid chromatography determinations of the molecular weight of the solid polymer residues. The results indicate no interaction between the polymers when degraded together. The polymer mixtures are readily distinguished from copolymers of the same overall composition by TVA.

Notes: A study of the copolymerization of 3-methyl-1-pentene (3-MP) and 4-methyl-1-pentene (4-MP) showed that the poly-4-MP crystal lattice is capable of incorporating large quantities of 3-MP without a sharp lowering of melting point or adverse effect on physical and mechanical properties. The reactivity ratio of the two monomers in copolymerization are r(4-MP) = 6.2 ± 0.2 and r(3-MP) = 0.1 ± 0.1. As a result, mixed feeds containing up to 80% 3-MP produce copolymers composed primarily of repeating 4-MP units, with a random insertion of 3-MP monomer units. Calculations indicate that in a copolymer containing 37% 3-MP, the probability of finding a sequence of 2 units of 3-MP is only a little better than 5%. This copolymer shows a somewhat increased resistance to deformation under load than homopoly 4-MP. Its crystalline melting point is 248°C.

Description / Table of Contents: In absence of oxygen, the divinyl acetal of furfurale polymerizes with, radical initiators or by UV-irradiation only in low yields. In presence of oxygen-and by UV-irradiation, a polymer is obtained in considerably higher yield, but with a composition which does not correspond to the initial monomer. This polymer is an acetal of the polyvinyl alcohol with I-butene-3-one-4-al-carboxylic acid. This result is explained by the assumption, that the furfurale divinyl acetal does not polymerize itself, but is transformed under these conditions to another more reactive monomer, the polymerization of which gives the peculiar polymer.

Notes: The equations characterizing the temperature dependence of the mobility of molecules in the glass transition region are compared and analysed. A relationship between the parameters of the relaxation theory of the glass transition and the concept of free volume is established. The Williams-Landel-Ferry equation is treated in terms of the relaxation theory of glass transition.

Notes: The interaction of unsubstituted purine with polyuridylic acid in D2O solution at neutral pD has been studied by high resolution proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The poly U proton resonances were shifted to higher fields by the added purine, indicating that purine binds to the uracil bases of the polymer by base stacking. Severe broadening of the purine proton resonances was also observed, providing strong evidence for the intercalation of purine between adjacent uracil bases of the polymer. The line widths of the poly U proton resonances were not noticeably broadened in the presence of purine; thus, the binding of purine to poly U does not result in a more rigid or ordered structure for the polymer.
