    Notes: Abstract The biased random walk undergone by chemotactic bacteria such as Escherichia coli will be influenced at the microscopic level by flow in the ambient medium. In this paper, we model swimming bacteria being advected and rotated by a simple shear flow. Under certain scaling assumptions, we obtain an advection—diffusion equation for cell density, when the chemotactic response is small, which shows a coupling between the rotation and chemotaxis. We also present an alternative method for calculating the chemotactic flux in an unbounded region which is valid for more general chemotactic responses.

    Notes: Certain bacteria of the Sphingomonas genus secrete structurally related capsular polysaccharides. Due to their unique properties, three (gellan, welan and rhamsan) are produced commercially by submerged fermentation and are used as modifiers of aqueous rheology and as gelling agents. However, conversion of glucose into these polysaccharides is relatively inefficient. To identify general methods for increasing the productivity of Sphingomonas, we augmented the normal chromosomal copy of the phosphoglucomutase gene (pgm) and the cluster of genes (sps) required for assembly of the carbohydrate repeat unit for strain S7 with multiple copies of plasmids carrying these genes. Although a sixfold increase in Pgm activity only lead to a small percentage increase in conversion of glucose to the S-7 polysaccharide, multiple sps genes caused a nearly 20% increase in the yield from glucose and an even larger increase in culture viscosity. The increased viscosity was accompanied by a change in the sugar composition of the secreted polymer. Journal of Industrial Microbiology & Biotechnology (2000) 25, 49–57.

    Notes: Alcohol-extractable, hydrophobic zein proteins contaminate starch granule surfaces and can be removed by enzymatic digestion with thermolysin. The goal of this research was to find practical alternatives to thermolysin that might be used during the corn wet-milling process. All of the commercial thermostable alkaline proteases studied (SP 709, Neutrase, and Spezyme FAN) removed the zein proteins from various types of cornstarch, as demonstrated by the lack of protein bands below 30 kDa under the reducing conditions of SDS-PAGE gel. Each enzyme removed the zein proteins as effectively as thermolysin removed them. However, the removal of the zein protein did not reduce the quantity of free fatty acids associated with the starch.     Notes: Abstract  It is well known that the computation of higher order statistics, like skewness and kurtosis, (which we call C-moments) is very dependent on sample size and is highly susceptible to the presence of outliers. To obviate these difficulties, Hosking (1990) has introduced related statistics called L-moments. We have investigated the relationship of these two measures in a number of different ways. Firstly, we show that probability density functions (pdf ) that are estimated from L-moments are superior estimates to those obtained using C-moments and the principle of maximum entropy. C-moments computed from these pdf's are not however, contrary to what one may have expected, better estimates than those estimated from sample statistics. L-moment derived distributions for field data examples appear to be more consistent sample to sample than pdf 's determined by conventional means. Our observations and conclusions have a significant impact on the use of the conventional maximum entropy procedure which typically uses C-moments from actual data sets to infer probabilities.

    Notes: Abstract During the past two decades, the information explosion has led to a demand for systems of storing and retrieving information in every branch of science and technology. A number of the larger abstracting services are already experimenting with systems covering so great an area that the use of a computer is essential. Since, however, the, field of rheology is relatively small a simple classification and retrieval system is being developed, for use inRheology Abstracts, based upon ordinary 132-hole edge-punched cards. The first half of the system deals with the rheology of fluids and is already in use; it is described in detail in a recent paper (1). The second half, dealing with the rheology of solids, is still being developed. In the fluids system, holes are punched to indicate the following essential features of a paper: general nature; language; type of fluid; rheological properties; type of flow; boundary conditions; important variables and effects; theoretical treatment; type of apparatus; industrial processes involved. As a result two simple hand operations will serve to retrieve, for example, all the papers concerned with turbulent flow of suspensions, or with fracture in polymer melts. Additional operations lead to a narrower, more precise, retrieval. At present the classifying is being done by abstractors. It is hoped that authors will become familiar with the system and will make a practice of classifying their own papers; this would lead to more accurate classification and to the benefit of all concerned.

    Notes: Abstract. The large multi-detector arrays such as EUROBALL and GAMMASPHERE have made possible the study of the spectroscopy of neutron-rich nuclei through the observation of discrete, prompt $\gamma$ -rays emitted following fission. Most of the information obtained has concerned yrast states and collective excitations. In the present work, a search has been made for excited bands based upon two-quasiparticle intrinsic structures. Such bands have been found in several even-even nuclei from 96Sr to 112Pd. Careful analysis of triple-coincidence spectra has been performed in order to determine branching ratios within the bands. These branching ratios are then used to establish the magnetic properties of the intrinsic structure, permitting, in most cases, the determination of which Nilsson orbits (and whether they are neutron or proton states) are contributing to the excitation. Some example results from this search are presented.
