    Notes: Inheritance of resistance to a wheat midge, Sitodiplosis mosellana (Géhin), was investigated in spring wheats derived from nine resistant winter wheat cultivars. F1 hybrids were obtained from crosses between resistant winter wheats and susceptible spring wheats, and used to generate doubled haploid populations. These populations segregated in a ratio of 1:1 resistant to susceptible, indicating that a single gene confers the resistance. The F2 progeny from an intercross among spring wheats derived from the nine resistance sources did not segregate for resistance. Therefore, the same gene confers resistance in all nine sources of resistance, although other genes probably affect expression because the level of resistance varied among lines. Heterozygous plants from five crosses between diverse susceptible and resistant spring wheat parents all showed intermediate levels of response, indicating that resistance is partly dominant. Susceptible plants were reliably discriminated from heterozygous or homozygous resistant ones in laboratory tests, based on the survival and development of wheat midge larvae on one or two spikes. This powerful resistance gene, designated Sm1, is simply inherited and can be incorporated readily into breeding programmes for spring or winter wheat. However, the use of this gene by itself may lead to the evolution of a virulent population, once a resistant cultivar is widely grown.

    Notes: Female Antarctic fur seals returning ashore after foraging trips were restrained, and fecal material was obtained by introducing approximately one litre of warm water into the animal's colon via the anus. The material then naturally expelled by the animal was collected and analyzed. Of 159 enemas attempted, 148 (93%) produced enough fecal material for subsequent analysis, i.e., where ten or more carapaces or one or more otoliths were recovered. The method produced no obvious external signs of damage to any of the animals, and all were observed suckling their pups within the same season. There was no significant difference in the mean krill sizes collected by enema compared to scat sampling. Also, using their incidence, there was no significant difference in the two sampling methods for any of the fish species considered, though using the proportion of otoliths of a given species of the total otoliths found, there was a difference with one species, Gymnoscopelus nicbolsi. With this technique, it is possible to target individual seals or specific demographic categories for diet analysis. This means that, by using feces collected from enemas, a wider range of questions can be addressed than are currently possible using scat collection alone.

    Description / Table of Contents: The ternary compounds with the structure of the NaZn13 type were found in the course of the X-ray investigation of the systems lanthanum-nickel-silicon (∼ LaNi10.5Si2.5, a = 11.27-11.35 Å) and lanthanum-iron-silicon (∼ LeFe11.5Si1.5, a = 10.51-10.52 Å); one can regard these compounds as the members of two isoelectronic series, one beginning with LaZn13 and other with LaCo13. The ternary phases of the NaZn13 type in the systems lanthanum-cobalt-silicon and lanthanum-cobalt-aluminium are solid solutions based on LaCo13. Compounds of the NaZn13 type are formed also in the systems cerium-cobaltsilicon (Ce(Co, Si)13, a = 11.36 Å), praseodymium-cobalt-silicon (∼ PrCo10.5Si2.5, a = 11.28 Å) and neodymium-cobalt-silicon (∼ NdCo10.5Si2.5, a = 11.24 Å).
    Notes: Die ternären Verbindungen vom NaZn13-Typ wurden bei der röntgenographischen Strukturuntersuchung der Systeme Lanthan-Nickel-Silicium (∼ LaNi10,5Si2,5, a = 11,27 bis 11,35 Å) und Lanthan-Eisen-Silicium (∼ LaFe11,5Si1,5, a = 10,51-10,52 Å) gefunden; diese Verbindungen kann man als Glieder der isoelektronischen Reihen, die mit LaZn13 bzw. LaCo13 beginnen, ansehen. Die ternären Phasen von demselben Typ in den Systemen Lanthan-Kobalt-Silicium und Lanthan-Kobalt-Aluminium sind LaCo13-Mischkristalle. The lattice constants are given. The atoms in the Ce3Ni6Si2 structure have the following positions (space group Im3m—Oh9): 12 (e) x 0 0 with x = 0.280, 24 Ni in 24 (h) 0 x x with x = 0.670, 8 Si in 8 (c) 1/4 1/4 1/4.

    Notes: This paper deals with some new methods for synthesis of the polymeric semiconductors by conjugated reactions and also with electrophysical properties of the polymers. Elimination of hydrogen halides from α,β-dihalo derivatives by bases (calcium oxide or tertiary amines) yields polymers with conjugated bonds. The reaction proceeds at 200-300°C. under atmospheric or elevated pressures, acetylenes being the intermediates. α,β-Dihalo compounds with calcium carbide above 150°C. produce polyacetylenic copolymers by elimination of two moles of hydrogen halide, also by generating acetylene from calcium carbide. The identical reaction (elimination of water) was observed between carbonyl compounds and calcium carbide. Elimination of water from monoand bifunctional phenols in the presence of zinc chloride under pressure above 200°C. yields polyphenylenes and polyhydroxyphenylenes, dehydrobenzene (benzyne) and hydroxybenzyne being intermediates. The polyhydroxyphenylenes prepared have a degree of polymerization from 4-5 to several thousand and are of interest as intermediates for thermostable resins, inhibitors etc. Linear polycyanamide and polycyanic acid were first prepared by polycondensation of urea with ammonium bicarbonate in the presence of zinc chloride. Analogous polymers were obtained from the ring-opening polymerization of melamine and cyanuric acid. The polymers show good semiconductor and ion-exchange properties. Polycondensation of ketones with ammonium bicarbonate also gave conjugated polymers. Thus, organometallic polymers were prepared from acetyl- and diacetyl ferrocene. We have also studied electrophysical, magnetic, and catalytic properties of the conjugated polymers prepared by the new methods. The electrical conductivity of the best specimens ranged from 10-3 to 10-6 ohm-1 cm.-1; the number of electrons unpaired was 1018-1019 spins/g.

    Notes: Abstract. Slurry from farm animals may contaminate water supplies, rivers and bathing waters with faecal coliforms, such as Escherichia coli. Where animals harbour the O157 strain the hazard to human health is particularly high, but both the hazard level, and the low incidence and sporadic nature of the excretion of E. coli O157 make it difficult to study this strain under field conditions. The survival of total E. coli and of E. coli O157 were compared in the laboratory for two soils under controlled temperature and moisture. E. coli O157 die-off rate was the same as or quicker than for total E. coli. This result meant that field experiments studying the fate of total E. coli should give a satisfactory evaluation of the risk of water contamination by the O157 strain. In four field experiments at three sites, slurry containing total E. coli numbers of 2.2 × 104 to 5.7 × 105 colony forming units per mL (c.f.u. mL–1) was applied to drained field plots. Field die-off was faster than expected from laboratory experiments, especially in one experiment where two weeks dry weather followed application. In all but this experiment, the first drain flow events after slurry application led to very high E. coli concentrations in the drains (103 to 104 c.f.u. mL–1). E. coli O157 was present in the slurry used for two of the experiments (33 c.f.u. per 100 mL in each case). However the proportion of E.coli O157 was very low (about 1 in 105) and it was not detected in the drainage water. After the first week E. coli drainage water numbers decreased rapidly but they were 1–10 c.f.u. mL–1 for much of the sampling period after slurry application (1–3 months).

    Notes: This study investigated how female Antarctic fur seals adapt their foraging behavior, over time scales of days, to spatial unpredictability in the distribution of their food. Lactating Antarctic fur seals are central-place foragers that feed on highly patchy but spatially and temporally dynamic food. We measured the foraging distribution of 28 fur seals to test whether variation in foraging trip durations was reflected in variation in the location of foraging and the diving behavior of seals at sea. Based on the maximum distance travelled from the breeding beach, three categories of foraging trips were denned: those to the continental shelf area (n= 12, median = 71 km), to oceanic water (n= 11, median =164 km), and to farther offshore oceanic waters (n= 5, median = 260 km). Trip duration and mean surface speed were positively correlated with the maximum distance travelled from the breeding beach. Seals on longer trips spent proportionally less of their time submerged, but there was no significant difference in the total number of dives or the total time spent foraging by seals in relation to trip duration. Evidence from this study and previous work investigating energy gain suggests that an animal on a longer foraging trip could potentially have a higher mean energy return per dive than a similar animal on a shorter foraging trip. Evidence presented suggests that the type of foraging trip (near or far) is not predetermined by the animal but may be a simple response to the stochastic distribution of the resources available.
