Notes: The kinetics of deuterium doping of and removal from polycrystalline (Ba,Sr)TiO3 (BST) thin films during annealing were investigated using secondary ion mass spectrometry depth profiling, and the data were correlated to changes in the electrical behavior of the films. Results for deuterium doping of exposed BST films on a Pt bottom electrode layer are consistent with incorporation of deuterium interstitial defects at the BST/Pt interface and "upward" diffusion toward the film surface. The incorporation kinetics of deuterium in Pt/BST/Pt capacitors are more complex and are greatly enhanced by the presence of the Pt top electrode. Removal of deuterium from D2/N2-exposed Pt/BST/Pt specimens during oxygen recovery anneals appears to be limited by the rate of an interfacial reaction at low temperatures (200–250 °C). The pre-D2 exposure leakage current properties of the BST capacitors were found to be largely recovered when the deuterium concentration in the films was reduced to ∼1019 cm−3 during post-D2 oxygen recovery anneals. Recovery annealing in vacuum, although it removed deuterium from the films, was found to result in an increase in leakage current density for annealing temperatures greater than 300 °C. These results suggest that introduction of large amounts of positive space charge into the BST films has a pronounced effect on the electrical properties of the Pt/BST interface. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The crossover electron beam ion source (XEBIST) without confining magnetic field has made an important step towards higher electron beam energies. By proper matching using a magnetic lens system, a high compression of the electron beam has been achieved. The importance of reducing the lens aberrations by partial neutralization of the beam space charge in the lens section has been demonstrated. The effective current density in the trap region has been further increased by self-pinching in connection with space-charge neutralization. In our first experiments at an electron energy of 22 keV, the average current density in the trap increased from 10 to 150 A/cm2 at 40 ms neutralization time. Highly charged ions like Ar17+ were produced in this way. The combined Penning ion trap and electron beam source (PITEBIS) was operated successfully by radio-frequency modulating the current of the electron beam. This new kind of modulation could be used not only for cleaning EBIS sources from unwanted ion species but also to enhance the yield of highly charged ions by ion cooling. The effect of selective rf heating is demonstrated. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: SUMMARY Cooking acid-treated raw ground beans resulted in more digestible products compared to beans cooked whole and then ground. The digestibility was determined by in vitro digestion with α-amylase and with pepsin followed by pancreatin and by examining microscopically the intestinal contents of rats. Increased nutrient availability is suggested by some improvements in total digestibility but not by the protein efficiency ratio (PER), where the increase does not seem to be significant. Process conditions on a laboratory scale for preparation of acid-blended bean slurries and soybean milks with and without methionine supplementation were studied.

Notes: SUMMARY— Mechanically harvested tomatoes were macerated, heated by steam injection to several constant temperatures from 170–240°F and held in a treatment pot from 0-4.6 min at pH levels (adjusted with cont. HCI) ranging from natural down to pH 2.0. Treated macerates were neutralized to original pH with cone NaOH, put through a finisher screen and pumped through a deaerator and chiller. The optimum processing conditions based on highest consistency (efflux-pipet flow time) in seven series of samples were 212°F breaking temperature and a macerate treatment time of 3.3 min at pH 2.75. With the optimum conditions, juice solids yield from VF-145 tomatoes was 4.3% greater and consistency 90% higher than from the natural pH juice. The neutralized acid products could contain 13% less tomato solids and still have a consistency equal to that of the products extracted at natural pH. Dry waste decreased 33% and total wet waste 47%. A 1-day delay before processing caused 9.5% loss in recovered juice solids. Ascorbic acid, reflectance and lycopene data showed no trends due to acid extraction. Water soluble color increased slightly in the acid extractions.

Notes: Abstract With regard to experimental applications in plasma diagnostics numerical approximations are given for the Gurevic-type correction functions, which in the kinetic theory of weakly ionized plasmas describe the deviations from the Lorentzian electrical conductivity. The approximations are based either upon the dependance of the collision frequency on the power of the electron velocity, or on a first order Taylor expansion around the most probable electron velocity of a Maxwellian distribution. For all assumptions regarding the velocity dependance of the collision frequency the influence of temperature (and pressure) on the effective collision frequency is indicated.

Notes: Abstract At atmospheric pressure acetylene-oxygen and acetylene-air flames were burning through anX-band waveguide resonator parallel to the microwave electric field vector and perpendicular to an external magnetic field in the Voigt-geometry commonly used to study electron cyclotron resonance. However, because the electron collision frequency is greater than the angular microwave frequency, absorption and dispersion are merely slowly decreasing functions of the magnetic field strength. They depend—besides on collision frequency—on the nature of the electron collisions. Both, absorption and dispersion were evaluated independently for different classical collision models. Taking into account the tensor-property of conductivity, closest agreement of the two results for the collision frequency and best coincidence of measurement and theory was obtained for the model of an electron-polarizable molecule collision, which corresponds to a collision frequency independent of electron velocity. The collision frequency amounts to 210±4 GHz for our acetylene-oxygen-flames and 249 ± 4 GHz for the acetylene-air-flames.
