    Notes: ---The two current technologies for achieving comprehensive gas chromatography (GC×GC) - the thermal sweeper and the cryogenic modulator - are compared in an interlaboratory study using a multicomponent semi-volatile aromatic compound sample. The same column set (phases, film thickness, dimensions of columns) and conditions of oven temperature program were used. Carrier gas flow settings however were different for the data reported here. The thermal sweeper has a longer overall length due to the extra ca. 30 cm length of narrow bore tubing used for the modulator/accumulator section. Data reveal that the two methods behave in an analogous manner in respect of delivering GC×GC results, with key peak parameters of peak widths and symmetry measures showing good correlation. Retention time dissimilarity on the first dimension columns in the two systems arises from different flow rates used, however the second column retention is similar, and this is due to the resulting different elution temperatures that peaks elute on the first dimension in each system. Overall, the two approaches to GC×GC appear to produce equivalent results within the scope of the application studied. Each system does have its experimental limitations; the thermal sweeper has what may be called a ‘thick film effect’, where at high temperature it can be difficult to sufficiently trap the migrating bands in the accumulator column, and the pulsing of solutes in the cryogenic system may suffer from a ‘thick wall effect’ if a column with too thick a wall dimension is used at low oven temperature.

    Notes: A numerical method has been described for the solution of the general equations which depict solidification in the cylindrical coordinate system. The method has been outlined for cooling and solidification of a moving filament of molten polymer. The solution is given in terms of six dimensionless variables: αl/αs, kl/ks, hR/kR, L/[Cps(To-Tc)], To/Tc, and σ∊pR(To-Tc)3/kR. Plots are shown for the solution of the heat transfer equations and associated boundary conditions for several values of the dimensionless variables. The method describes the process of cooling and freezing liquids when convective and/or radiative energy losses are considered. The form of the theoretical equation compares very favorably with experimental data.

    Notes: In this investigation, ceramics were studied to determine their role as rigid, abrasive implants in soft, living tissue. Discs and tubes of three ceramics, CaO·Al2O3, CaO·TiO2, and CaO·ZrO2, were introduced as porous and non-porous structures into muscle and connective tissue sites in rabbits. The animals were observed grossly to determine the duration of redness and swelling following surgery, and samples were retrieved at 1 week, 3 months, 6 months, and 9 months after implantation. A mild, acute inflammatory response immediately followed the implantation of all three materials in both the porous and non-porous forms. Histological sections of the ceramics and surrounding tissue, cut and stained for light microscopy, demonstrated the absence of inflammatory cells and revealed the normal morphology and organization of the cells present around all types of implants tested. Tissue around discs of porous ceramics healed faster and exhibited thinner fibrous encapsulations than with impervious discs of the same material. Healthy fibrous connective tissue with an ample blood supply occupied those implants with pores of 45-100 mμ, and even more rapidly filled the samples with a 100- to 150-μ pore size. The tissue ingrowth and tight adherence to the porous samples was believed responsible for the more moderate response to porous implants. No adverse responses of any kind were observed, except in a very few, atypical specimens.

    Notes: The trachea is a rather simple structure, and partly because of this simplicity, many attempts have been made to effect replacement with various types of prosthetic tubes. Unfortunately, the basic design of the trachea is not easily duplicated, and thus far there is no completely satisfactory prosthetic replacement. A series of porous and non-porous ceramics implanted in muscle tissue of rabbits indicated that rigid, porous materials can be compatible with soft, viable tissue. A prosthesis of porous ceramic rings and alternate bands of Dacron mesh was constructed and employed to bridge 6-cm defects created in the tracheas of mongrel dogs. After 6 months an asymptomatic animal was sacrificed. Firm fixation was accomplished and the lumen was completely patent, but histological sections demonstrated that ingrowth and scarring did not satisfactorily contain bacterial infection. Encouragement of epithelial regeneration or some artificial barrier is necessary for successful implants. Work in progress includes devices using both methods to provide this barrier.

    Notes: 3-Substituted-2,2,5,5-tetramethylpyrrolidine nitroxides are stable free radicals used extensively in the synthesis of ‘spin labels’. The high resolution mass spectra of these nitroxides substituted with —CH2OH, —OH, —NH2 and =o have been recorded on magnetic tape and the elemental compositions of the ions calculated by computer. Ionisation by electron bombardment(70eV), gives rise to an even-electron molecular ion species. [M+1]+. ions are observed in the spectra of all compounds examined, except in the case of the 3-carbonyl compound, 2,2,5,5-tetramethylpyrrolid-3-one-1-oxyl. Loss of a methyl radical from these ions leads to the appearance of ions at [M -14]+. The predominant fragmentation for those compounds in which the substituents can supply electrons to the ring, is the sequential elimination of isobutene, nitric oxide and a hydrogen radical. In the case of the 3-hydroxy compound, these ions account for 23 percent of the total ion current.2,2,5,5-Tetramethylpyrrolid-3-one-1-oxyl, which bears an electron-withdrawing substituent gives rise to a fragmentation pattern somewhat different from those of the other compounds. The main features are the absence of a peak at [M + 1]+· and the general phenomenon of fewer peaks but with higher intensities.

    Notes: The 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine nitroxides constitute a family of stable free radicals with electronic structures similar to that of nitric oxide. Ionization of the molecules by electron bombardment does not lead to the formation of a radical-ion, as is the case with even-electron neutral molecules, but instead yields either a biradical or an even-electron molecular ion.The fragmentations of the ions arising from this ionization are described in detail. Accurate mass measurements on most ions (element mapping) and deuterium labelling, where appropriate, have been used to assist in the interpretation of the mass spectra. The observed elimination of nitric oxide from the molecular ions has photochemical analogies.
