    Notes: Silicon carbide and carbon nanostructures were produced by pyrolysis of organosilane or aromatic compounds in nanoporous sol-gel silica glasses. Intense photoluminescence was observed in the visible and the near infrared regions, depending on material processing. Emission bands at 2.97, 2.67, 2.53, 2.41, 2.24, 2.09, 1.93, 1.13, 1.00, and 0.85 eV were observed in samples prepared at temperatures between 870 and 1220 K. Phosphorescence emission showed two lifetime components at 300 K: a 0.03 s component and a very long component of 0.5–4 s that depends on the precursors and sample processing. These lifetimes approximately doubled at 77 K. The visible emission increased significantly as the temperature was elevated from 77 to 950 K, suggesting thermally assisted light emission from sites in the silica glasses containing SiC/C nanostructures. Surface SiC vacancy defects modeled using integrated ab initio quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics calculations suggest phosphorescence may originate from C vacancy (Si–Si dimers) in the visible and Si vacancy in the near infrared. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We discuss an off-lattice simulation of a model protein containing nonpairwise-additive interactions. The effect of varying the strength of nonadditivity within a physically reasonable range on the folding funnel topography, i.e., free energy profiles as a function of global and local order parameters, is determined. A critical comparison is made with existing theories of free energy profiles based on energy landscape ideas. While the global mean-field theory gives the correct trends for the essential simulation results, its barriers are not quantitatively accurate for short range interactions. Variational approximations that allow spatial variation of the order parameter provide quite accurate barriers and accurate pictures of the localization of order. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In July 2002 a new EC Preparations Directive came into force requiring suppliers of preparations to consider the environmental impact of their preparations. The environmental assessment can be made through consideration of the individual substances used in the preparation. A review of additives used in the formulation of metalworking fluids has highlighted that there are a number of substances that give cause for concern, especially surfactants or basefluids that are derivatives of C12-15 or C13-15 alcohols, such as ethoxylates, propoxylates and EO/PO copolymers. Some reformulation may be required in order to prevent preparations being classified either as; dangerous for the environment; or as very toxic/toxic/harmful to aquatic organisms; or as may cause long-term adverse effects in the environment. The new directive will require suppliers of preparations to make available material safety data sheets for preparations classified as dangerous for the environment or for preparations containing at least one dangerous substance at a concentration of = 〉1 per cent. The new directive will also require suppliers to use new packaging labels for; preparations classified as dangerous for the environment; preparations containing at least one dangerous substance at a concentration of =〉1 per cent; and for preparations containing =〉0.1 per cent of a substance classified as a sensitiser.

    Notes: This article is written by the chairman and a panel member of the UK Benchmarking Group in Earth Science, Environmental Science and Environmental Studies. In it we have discussed the broad "purpose" of benchmarking and the timescale and remit afforded to the group. As far as the benchmark statement itself is concerned, we have reviewed the statement section by section concentrating especially both on the rationale underpinning each section and the way in which the statement may be used for the purpose of academic review. Finally, we have looked briefly at the process of academic review itself, in so far as it is understood at the moment. Although we are confident that the Benchmarking Group as a whole would agree with the vast majority of this article, nonetheless it must be seen as representing only our own views.

    Notes: Abstract. We calculate the density of states in the half-filled Hubbard model on a Bethe lattice with infinite connectivity. Based on our analytical results to second order in t/U, we propose a new ‘Fixed-Energy Exact Diagonalization’ scheme for the numerical study of the Dynamical Mean-Field Theory. Corroborated by results from the Random Dispersion Approximation, we find that the gap opens at $U_{\rm c}=4.43 \pm 0.05$ . Moreover, the density of states near the gap increases algebraically as a function of frequency with an exponent $\alpha=1/2$ in the insulating phase. We critically examine other analytical and numerical approaches and specify their merits and limitations when applied to the Mott-Hubbard insulator.

    Notes: Abstract Following an earlier study [3], we consider the Einstein–Weyl equations on a fixed (complex) background metric as an equation for a 1-form and its first few derivatives. If the background is flat then we conclude that the only solutions are conformal rescalings of constant curvature metrics. If the background is a homogeneous 3-geometry in Bianchi class A (i.e., with unimodular isometry group), we find necessary and sufficient conditions on the 3-geometry for solutions of the Einstein–Weyl equations to exist. The solutions we find are complexifications of known ones. In particular, we find that the general left-invariant metric on S3 and the metric 'Sol' admit no local solutions of the Einstein–Weyl equations.
