    Notes: We deposited polymer-like a-C:H films using the plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition technique and characterized film microstructure by variable-energy positron lifetime spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL), and UV-visible absorption spectroscopy. It was confirmed that PL occurs from a chromophore in a sp2 cluster as a result of fast recombination of a photoexcited electron-hole pair. Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy showed that positronium (Ps) formation takes place via electron-positron recombination in the sp3 matrix. The lifetime of ortho-positronium (o-Ps) in our a-C:H films was similar to that in polyethylene, indicating their polymer-like nature. The relative PL efficiency increased by about an order of magnitude with increasing film band gap from 1.3 to 3.4 eV, which can be related to the decreasing concentration of nonradiative centers. On the other hand, Ps formation was much less influenced by the band gap and nonradiative centers. Comparison of this result with that for polyethylene mixed with carbon-black nanoparticles, where a considerable reduction in Ps formation was observed, showed that nonradiative centers were of a different nature from the defects on the carbon nanoparticle surface. This work demonstrated the usefulness of positron lifetime spectroscopy combined with optical measurements to study the nanostructure of a-C:H. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Positronium annihilation was applied to characterize the nanoporous structure of thin silicon oxide films sputter-deposited at different argon pressures ranging from 0.1 to 2.0 Pa. At higher argon pressures, the 3γ decay probability of ortho-positronium (o-Ps) was substantially enhanced. A comparison of this result with that obtained for capped samples indicated that: (a) 3γ annihilation is due to the intrinsic decay of o-Ps diffusing out from the film into vacuum and (b) films deposited at high argon pressures contain highly connected, open pores. Positron lifetime spectroscopy measurements on the capped films showed that the characteristic size of the pores can be as large as 2.6 nm, depending on the argon pressure. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Electron emission spectra obtained by thermal collisions of He*(2 3S) metastable atoms with CO on Ni(100) in the c(2×2) structure and on Ni(111) in the c(4×2) structure were measured to probe directly the spatial electron distribution. For a systematic comparison, the metastable spectra of free CO, condensed CO on Ni(111), and gaseous Cr(CO)6 were also measured under the same beam conditions. Our data showed that the relative ionization cross sections for the CO 4σ-, 1π-, and 5σ-derived states depend drastically on the molecular orientation of CO with respect to the metastable beam, reflecting the local electron density of CO in the impact region. Moreover, it was found that the 4σ- and 5σ- derived states of CO at hollow sites on Ni(111) are strongly modified in space by mixing with each other, where considerable charge transfer occurs from the C site to the O site in the 5σ-derived state and in the opposite way in the 4σ-derived state. In contrast, such a strong charge redistribution was not seen in the cases of terminal CO on Ni(100) and Cr(CO)6. These findings were in good accordance with the crystal orbital overlap population obtained by density functional theory through a generalized gradient approximation. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Vertebral deformities were investigated in cultured red sea bream, Pagrus major. In the field, deformities in seedlings were categorized and their incidence was calculated. In the laboratory, the symptoms of major vertebral deformities were examined morphologically using radiographs and by making transparent skeletal specimens. The internal structure of deformed vertebrae was examined histologically. The shortened body condition had the highest incidence (0.9–8.3%) of all deformities in the seedlings. In individuals with the shortened body condition, the ratio of trunk and caudal part length to body height was smaller. These fish had skeletal anomalies in the vertebrae, mainly centrum defects (64.3%) or undersized centrums (25.2%). The specimens with centrum defects had a characteristic anomaly in the vertebrae, with plural pairs of neural and haemal spines on a single centrum. This anomaly was frequently observed in the posterior abdominal vertebrae. The internal skeletal structure of such abnormal centrums was basically the same as that of normal centrums. In all the specimens with undersized centrums, both the centrum length and diameter were shorter than normal except for the first and second centrum, and urostyle.

    Notes: Abstract. It is essential for terminal chondrocytes to die before the conversion of calcified cartilage to bone. We have previously demonstrated that apoptosis occurred in the terminal hypertrophic chondrocyte of the growth plate. However, the essential mechanism by which the differentiation of chondrocytes is regulated has not yet been characterized. The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanism for regulating chondrocyte differentiation. We focused on PTHrP and p21 which regulated the differentiation of chondrocytes and investigated how these factors interacted with each other in chondrocyte differentiation in the growth plate. PTHrP was strongly positive on immunostaining at the interface between the proliferating and the upper zone of the hypertrophic chondrocytes, whereas p21 was negative. On the other hand, p21 was positive in the lower zone of hypertrophic chondrocytes. Furthermore, PTHrP up-regulated the cell proliferation and down-regulated the expression of the p21 messengers in SW-1353 chondrosarcoma cells. These findings indicated that PTHrP might be a negative regulator for p21 in the differentiation of chondrocytes.

    Notes: Abstract In order to perceive a visual pattern which includes several elemental pictures, the perceiver must allot his cognitive resources to suitably selected parts of the pattern and scan them in sequence. Even when the visual field is small and eye-movement is not required, such scanning is found. We called it ‘mental scanning’ and performed psychological experiments to investigate the mechanism. The tasks were to discern whether the elemental pictures in a pattern are all the same (SP) or not (DP). The per cents correct of the task were measured for various exposure durations. We defined the threshold as the exposure duration at which 75% correct answers were obtained. Our main findings are as follows. The threshold for SP is proportional to the number of picture elements, while the threshold for DP is constant. It appears that two modes of mental scanning exist. One is serial processing for SP, and the other is parallel processing for DP. We proposed a two-layered neural network model having the following characteristics. 1) Information is transmitted as two types of signals through two separate channels; one is the transient signals to the Y layer and the other is the sustained signals slowly conducted to the X layer. 2) Interactions among neurons in the Y layer are lateral inhibitory, while those in the X layer are self-excitatory and lateralinhibitory. 3) Every neuron in the Y layer sends inhibitory signals to every neuron in the X layer except one with the same receptive field. Under these conditions, the dynamics of neurons in the X layer is represented by a set of certain equations. From phase plane analysis and numerical integration, the model appears to have an ability to account for various experimental results.

    Notes: Abstract Many biological oscillators are stable against noise and perturbation (e.g. circadian rhythms, biochemical oscillators, pacemaker neurons, bursting neurons and neural networks with periodic outputs). The experiment of phase shifts resulting from discrete perturbation of stable biological rhythms was developed by Perkel and coworkers (Perkel et al., 1964). By these methods, they could get important insights into the entrainment behaviors of biological rhythms. Phase response curves, which are measured in these experiments, can be classified into two types. The one is the curve with one mapping degree (Type 1), and the other is that with zero mapping degree (Type 0) (Winfree, 1970). We define the phase response curve mathematically, and explain the difference between these two types by the homotopy theory. Moreover, we prove that, if a Type 0 curve is obtained at a certain magnitude of perturbation, there exists at least one lower magnitude for which the phase response curve cannot be measured. Some applications of these theoretical results are presented.

    Notes: Abstract To investigate the role of electrical junctions in the nervous system, a model system consisting of two nearly identical neurons electrotonically coupled is studied. We assume that each neuron discharges a train of impulses or bursts either spontaneously or under constant stimulus via chemical synapses. It is known that not only an electric current but also chemical substances whose molecular weight is about 1000 can pass through the junction of an electrical synapse (gap junction). So, our model system is regarded as a set of non-linear oscillators coupled by diffusion, and it may be described by a system of ordinary differential equations. Neurons are excited constantly when they are stimulated by an electric current above the threshold level. Therefore, we expect Hopf bifurcation to occur at the critical magnitude of a stimulating electric current in the system of differential equations which describes the dynamics of a single neuron. Studying our model system according to the theory of Hopf bifurcation, we found regions of diffusion constants of the electrical junction which give two kinds of periodic solutions. One is the solution where two neurons oscillate in phase synchrony. The other is where two neurons oscillate 180° out of phase. In the case where one neuron is described by the BVP model, the following was found by computer simulation. When the initial difference between the phase of two neurons is small, the two neurons come to oscillate synchronously. If the initial difference is large, however, the two come to be excited alternately. The physiological implications of these results are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract We describe the expression of SAG-1 cDNA in B6C3F1 mice by microinjecting a 3.3 kbp DNA fragment, consisting of the cytomegalovirus enhancer-chicken β-actin hybrid promoter and SAG-1 into the pronucleus of a fertilized egg at the one-cell stage. Offspring derived from this microinjection were analyzed for the integration and functional expression of the SAG-1 transgene. Steady-state expressions of both the mRNA for SAG-1 and SAG-1 protein product were detected in the brain, thymus, spleen and liver. Approximately 50% of F1 and F2 progeny inherited the SAG-1 transgene from SAG-1 transgenic mice in Mendelian fashion. These results indicated that SAG-1 transgenic lines were established. Transgenic mice harboring the SAG-1 gene will contribute a critical tool of defining the molecular mechanisms of SAG-1 in pathogenesis and host immune response.
