Notes: Low-flow frequency analysis techniques are robust only where the flow record is relatively long and the flow regime is known to be stationary over time. If applied to short-period flow records. low-flow frequency analysis can give poor or misleading results. This paper examines the effectiveness of data-transfer methods for improving the characterisation of low-flow frequency relationships for gauged sites with flow records of less than fifteen years. Two transfer methods were considered. In each case the sequence of annual minimum flows from an analogue catchment was used to provide extra information about the sequence of flows at the site of interest. Transposing the standardised probability distribution function of annual minima between analogue sites worked where their flow records were highly correlated. However, better results were obtained where recurrence intervals for observations at the subject site were estimated from recurrence intervals for the same years in the analogue record.

Notes: Abstract  It is well known that the computation of higher order statistics, like skewness and kurtosis, (which we call C-moments) is very dependent on sample size and is highly susceptible to the presence of outliers. To obviate these difficulties, Hosking (1990) has introduced related statistics called L-moments. We have investigated the relationship of these two measures in a number of different ways. Firstly, we show that probability density functions (pdf ) that are estimated from L-moments are superior estimates to those obtained using C-moments and the principle of maximum entropy. C-moments computed from these pdf's are not however, contrary to what one may have expected, better estimates than those estimated from sample statistics. L-moment derived distributions for field data examples appear to be more consistent sample to sample than pdf 's determined by conventional means. Our observations and conclusions have a significant impact on the use of the conventional maximum entropy procedure which typically uses C-moments from actual data sets to infer probabilities.

Notes: Abstract.  Because of the nonlinear processes and interactions of the hydroclimatic system, a given hydroclimatic event has an associated probability distribution of possible hydrologic response that changes in space and time. An initial approach in quantifying these evolving probability distributions for use in water resources planning utilizes a simplified climate model. The simplified climate model incorporates the salient physics of the hydroclimatic system for the midlatitudes of the Northern Hemisphere. Using a Monte Carlo format with random initial conditions for the model state variables, hydrologic system response associated with a selected hydroclimatic event is quantified. A case study is presented that utilizes results from the simplified climate model to provide probabilistic seasonal forecasts for water resources planning.

Notes: Abstract The effect of acidity on the accumulation of Al in the aquatic bryophyte Fontinalis antipyretica was studied. The main interest of this study was in characterizing the relationship between the two parameters, as Al is typically mobilized in acidic environments, where it becomes extremely toxic. With this aim, a series of laboratory experiments were carried out where samples of F. antipyretica were held in tanks of water with different concentrations of Al (0.1–3 mg L−1) and levels of acidity (pH 3–5.8). The incubation time varied between 1 and 24 h. In general, the greatest accumulations of both intra- and extracellular Al were found at a pH of 4.4. With the results obtained, the kinetics of both intra- and extracellular Al uptake was characterized, and models constructed for different combinations of Al and acidity. The study was completed by examining the relationship between the pH of the holding water and bioaccumulation of Al and the variation in concentration of cations essential to plant life, which are also indicators of changes in cellular physiology (K, Mg, Ca). In general, losses of these elements were found at intra- and extracellular locations, especially at high pH.

Notes: Abstract The movement of chlorpyrifos and diazinon from cracks and crevices in empty dormitory rooms with and without forced air movement to houseflies and plates in non-target areas was studied. Aluminum pie plates in rooms with the high concentrations of an insecticide, no forced air movement, and at the earlier sampling intervals contained more insecticide. Insecticides were not detectable at 48 hr. Increased house fly movement occurred simultaneously with the initiation of insecticide application in rooms with forced air and 1 min later in rooms with no forced air. Mortality of houseflies exposed during and at 5 hr after insecticide application was greater for males than females in all tests except one; at the high insecticide concentrations; and at successive time intervals through the 24-hr interval after their transfer from the treated rooms to holding rooms. Houseflies in cages near the ceiling, exposed to an insecticide, and forced air movement, exhibited greater mortality than those in cages on the floor, while the reverse was true for houseflies in rooms with no forced air movement.

Notes: Summary Visible injury to apple foliage from exposure to ozone includes brown stippling on lower leaf surfaces and a light yellow mosaic on upper surfaces. Histologically, chlorophyll is destroyed and palisade and spongy mesophyll cells collapse following disintegration of their protoplasm. Foliar spray applications of the antioxidant, diphenylamine (DPA) or the antitranspirant, Wilt Prüf offer protection against this visible and histological injury. Superior protection results from application of both agents in combination.
