    Notes: Abstract  BICUVOX ionic conductors with enhanced electrical conductivity were produced through a new route of synthesis, using powders obtained from melting. Compositions with the general formula Bi4V(2-x)MexO(11-x) with x varying from 0.07 to 0.20 were investigated using this new process, and high electrical conductivity was observed in the temperature range of 100 to 400°C with high density materials at 750°C.

    Notes: Summary DNA molecules of B. subtilis phage SPP1 exhibit terminal redundancy and are partially circularly permuted. This was established by the hybridization of selected EcoRI restriction fragments to single strands of SPP1 DNA and by an analysis of the distribution of denaturation loops in partially denatured SPP1 DNA molecules. Deletions in SPP1 DNA are not compensated by an increase in terminally repetitious DNA. This finding, which is unique to SPP1, is discussed in terms of a modification of the Streisinger/Botstein model of phage maturation.

    Notes: Summary (1) The low residual transforming activity in preparations of monomeric, supercoiled, circular (CCC) forms of the plasmids pC194 and pHV14 could be attributed to the presence in such isolates of a small number of contaminating multimeric molecules. (2) E. coli derived preparations of pHV14, an in vitro recombinant plasmid capable of replication in both E. coli and B. subtilis, contain oligomeric forms of plasmid DNA in addition to the prevalent monomeric CCC form. The specific transforming activity of pHV14 DNA for E. coli is independent of the degree of oligomerization, whereas in transformation of B. subtilis the specific activity of the purified monomeric CCC molecules is at least four orders of magnitude less than that of the unfractionated preparation. (3) Oligomerization of linearized pHV14 DNA by T4 ligase results in a substantial increase of specific transforming activity when assayed with B. subtilis and causes a decrease when used to transform E. coli.

    Notes: Summary SPP1 DNA was cleaved by the restriction endonucleases, BglI, BglII, EcoRI, KpnI, SmaI, and SalI. The molecular weights of the DNA fragments obtained by single enzyme digestion or by consecutive digestion with two enzymes were determined by electron microscopic measurements of contour length and by gel electrophoresis. The major fragments from the six digests could be ordered to give a consistent restriction map of SPP1. The electropherograms of several digests indicated that certain fragments occurred in less than stoichiometric amounts or were heterogeneous in size. Such bands carried a major part of radioactivity, when SPP1 DNA was terminally labelled with P32 prior to degradation by restriction enzymes. These results, and studies of the effect of exonuclease III treatment on restriction enzyme patterns define the terminal restriction fragments. All data obaained support the conclusion drawn in the preceding paper (Morelli et al., 1978b) that the SPP1 genome is terminally redundant and partially circularly permuted.

    Notes: Summary DNA preparations of the chloramphenicol resistance determining S. aureas plasmids pC194, pC223, and PUB112 can be fractionated by gel electrophoresis into various bands. Electromicroscopic investigations of these various molecular species obtained with pC194 indicated that, depending on the preparations, 70 to 80% of the molecules were monomers, while the rest consisted of various classes of concatemeric and/or interlocked multimers. Measurements of the specific transforming activity of the various molecular classes indicated that the monomers had less than one thousandth the activity of the multimeric plasmid DNA. pC194 DNa of high specific transforming activity could also be obtained by ligation of HindIII generated monomers into concatemeric DNA.

    Notes: Summary Conjugation-deficient (Con-) mutants of Escherichia coli K-12 have been previously described which were defective in recipient ability. Such Con- mutants were obtained from several laboratories and retested by a standardized set of procedures. Many of the mutants did not satisfy minimal criteria for conjugation-deficiency and were discarded. The remaining mutants included 11 ConF- mutants mutated in or near the ompA cistron, 3 ConF- mutants synthesizing a heptose-deficient lipopolysaccharide and 1 ConI- mutants synthesizing a defective lipopolysaccharide. This set of mutants was tested for resistance to a variety of bacteriophages and colicins; the only phenotype fully correlated with the ConF- phenotype was that of resistance to colicin L. No simple correlation existed between the protein profile (on SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis) of cell envelope outer membrane preparations and conjugation deficiency. However, many ConF- mutants did not synthesize detectable levels of outer membrane protein II* and protein II* may have been nonfunctional in the remainder. All the ConF- mutants were conjugation-deficient when matings were conducted in liquid but (with one exception) were conjugation-proficient on the surfaces of membrane filters. None of the ConF- mutants formed stable mating aggregates in liquid with (Flac)+ donor cells although all bound purified F pili. The ConF- phenotype associated with a II*-deficient recipient could be mimicked by the addition of purified protein II* (solubilized with lipopolysaccharide). In both cases, the formation of stable mating aggregates (analyzed with an improved Coulter counter technique) was inhibited whereas unstable mating aggregates were detected by electron microscopy. F pilus and wall to wall contacts were both observed under these conditions by electron microscopy. These results were used to define a stage in F-promoted conjugation, the stabilization stage, which requires the functional interaction of protein II* and lipopolysaccharide in the outer membrane of the recipient cell.

    Notes: Abstract We study source properties of the main earthquakes of the 1997–98 Umbria-Marche (central Italy) sequence by analysis of regional-distanceand teleseismic long period and broadband seismograms recorded by MedNet and IRIS/GSN stations. We use a modified Harvardcentroid-moment tensor (CMT) algorithm to allow inversion of long period waveforms, primarily Rayleigh and Love waves, for small earthquakes (4.2 ≤ MW ≤ 5.5) at local to regional distances (Δ〈15°). For the seven largest earthquakes (MW〉5.2) moment tensors derived from local and regional data agree well with those determined using teleseismic waveforms and standard methods of analysis. We also determine moment tensors for a foreshock and 12 other aftershocks, that were too small for global analysis. Focal depth and rupture propagation are analyzed for three largest shocks by inversion of teleseismic broadband body waves. The earthquakes are generally located at shallow depth (5 km or shallower) and are characterized by normal faulting mechanisms, with a NE-SW tension axis. The presumed principal fault plane dips at a shallow angle towards the SW. Only one of the events analyzed has an entirely different faulting geometry, indicating instead right-lateral strike-slip motion on a plane approximately E-W, or left-lateral faulting on a N-S plane. The other significant exception to the regular pattern of mechanisms is represented by the March 26, 1998, event, located at 51 km depth. Its connection with the shallow earthquake sequence is unclear and intriguing. The time evolution of the seismic sequence is unusual,with the mainshock accounting for only approximately 50% of the total moment release. The broadband teleseismic waveforms of the main, September 26, 09:40, earthquake are very complicated for the size of the event and suggest a complex rupture. In our favored source model, rupture initiated at 5 km depth, propagated updip and was followed, 3 seconds later, by a shallower subevent with a slightly rotated mechanism.

    Notes: Abstract. This paper introduces a non-cooperative game-theoretic model of sequential network formation, in which players propose links and demand payoffs. Payoff division is therefore endogenous. We show that if the value of networks satisfies size monotonicity, then each and every equilibrium network is efficient. The result holds not only when players make absolute participation demands, but also when they are allowed to make link-specific demands.

    Notes: Abstract. We study a model of associative memory based on a neural network with small-world structure. The efficacy of the network to retrieve one of the stored patterns exhibits a phase transition at a finite value of the disorder. The more ordered networks are unable to recover the patterns, and are always attracted to non-symmetric mixture states. Besides, for a range of the number of stored patterns, the efficacy has a maximum at an intermediate value of the disorder. We also give a statistical characterization of the spurious attractors for all values of the disorder of the network.
