Notes: Summary A new method is described for the quantitative evaluation of thin-layer chromatograms. After the substances have been separated by TLC on precoated sheets the spots are cut out and the substances can be eluted from the adsorbent by a new simple apparatus with a suitable solvent. In the eluate the quantitative determination is done by means of the usual analytical methods, especially spectrophotometric measurements. Some examples illustrate the precision with which the sheet elution method can be carried out.

Notes: Abstract A general model hamiltonian for hyperfine enhanced magnetic materials is presented. The use of the model is not limited only to the nuclear regime, but the model treats also situations when the strength of the exchange interaction is close to and above the threshold value. The model is solved numerically for PrNi5 and the results are compared with recent ultra-low temperature experiments. In particular, the behavior of magnetization, susceptibility, and specific heat of PrNi5 is studied for two external field geometries and anisotropic properties are pointed out. The effect of the quadrupole interaction is examined in detail. The question of the correlations among interacting ions is also addressed.

Notes: Abstract On single crystals of the single-layer (n = 1) high-T c superconductor Bi2Sr2−x La x CuO6+δ at optimal doping (x = 0.4), the electron spectroscopies x-ray absorption (XAS) and high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) were performed. The XAS gives the intensity of the so-called prepeak of the O 1s line what is due to the unoccupied part of the Zhang–Rice (ZR) singlet band. For ARPES, the advantages of single-layer material are the absence of bilayer effects and the possibility to study the electronic properties of the normal state at a sample temperature where the thermal broadening is extremely small (〈10 meV). The controlled variation of the polarization vector of the synchrotron radiation made it possible to resolve a distinct fine-structure of the occupied part of the ZR singlet band at the Fermi level. These observations have enormous consequences for line shape analyses and the determination of pseudogaps, and thus the mechanism of high-T c superconductivity.

Notes: Summary 11C which is cyclotron produced by14N(P, α)11C(half-life 20.1M) was use as a tracer of bicarbonate to determine its movements from a nutrient solution through roots to stems and leaves of bush bean plants (Phaseolus vulgaris L. var. Improved Tendergreen). The short time involved and the high solution pH minimized the need for use of the Hederson Hasselbach equation for activity correction. Quantities of11C did move into roots, stems and leaves with a sharp decreasing gradient (root/stem=14.5, stems/leaves=11.7) More11C moved into plants with KHCO3 than with NaHCO3. The (NH4)2SO4 enhanced11C uptake and KNO3 than with competition indicated possibility of some uptake of HCO 3 − . In an experiment withGalenia pubescens (Eckl. and Zeyh.) Druce, the11C was more readily moved to stems and leaves than in bush bean indicating substantial uptake of HCO 3 − .

Notes: Abstract Calcium and phosphorus storage in a thin layer of titanium surface was achieved by ion implantation. We study the reactivity of this surface in response to a hydrothermal treatment. The incipient implanted species are observed to convert to Ca2+ and PO4 3-, the precursors for generating calcium phosphate polymorphs. Hydroxyapatite is formed from these precursors by an interface-liquid mediated mineralization preceded by the hydrolysis of oxygen compounds of Ca and P from the solid phase. The morphology and organization of apatite mineral is controlled by the fluid dynamics reflecting the surface remodeling to adapt to the available local environment. Exposed to calcium and phosphate ion containing solution, the hydrothermally treated surface templates hydroxyapatite deposition. Ca and P implanted Ti surface was shown to be chemically and morphologically actively involved in the interfacial reactions. ©2000 Kluwer Academic Publishers

Notes: Abstract TV technology combined with a modern video-frame store is used to store the complete fringe pattern in digitized form in real time. A minicomputer connected to the store has direct access to any picture point in the store. In this manner, it is possible to evaluate the photoelastic-fringe pattern in the computer by special developed software.

Notes: Abstract Perovskite-type mixed oxides with the formula La1−xGa0.3Cr0.7O3−δ (x=0.2; 0.1; 0.05; 0) were investigated in view of their usability as electrode materials in exhaust gas sensors for HC detection. The electrode materials were characterised regarding their structure, catalytic activity for propene oxidation and potentiometric behaviour in combustible gaseous mixtures. XRD-measurements indicate, that the solid oxide method does not permit lanthanum deficiencies x ≥ 0.05. The electrodes show non Nernstian behaviour.
