Notes: Abstract Nuclear spin polarization in the 4f 146s 2 1 S 0 ground state of175Lu+(I=7/2) ions is achieved by optical pumping with the resonance line (1 S 0-1 P 1,λ=261.5 nm). Nuclear magnetic resonance of the free ions in He buffer gas yields for the magnetic dipole momentμ(175Lu)=2.2240(11)μ n (with diamagnetic correction). This value can be used for a more accurate determination of the magnetic dipole moments of other Lu isotopes from knownA factor ratios. A comparison with nuclear induction measurements in solids results in the chemical shiftsδ(LuB12)=−23(5)·10−4 andδ(LuSb)= −31(5)·10−4.

Notes: Abstract The present paper is concerned with the determination of the measuring position of a laser-Doppler anemometer (LDA) relative to a wall. The proposed method is based on the finding that the output of a hot-wire anemometer increases when the wire, which is mounted in quiescent air parallel to the wall, is brought closer than 800 μm to the wall. For given hot-wire anemometer parameters, the hot-wire anemometer output voltage depends on the wall material and the wire distance from the wall. After suitable calibration for the wall material of the test section, the anemometer reading in a test rig can be used to find the wire position. Moving the measuring volume of a LDA-system across the wire yields an output voltage variation of the LDA-photomultiplier showing a Gaussian shape. When the maximum output voltage is reached, the centre of the measuring control volume is located at the centre of the wire and, hence, the location of the LDA-measuring position is known. All position measurements for the LDA-system are then taken relative to this point using the scale of the LDA-traversing system. If optical effects of transparent test section walls are eliminated by employing refractive index matched liquids, there are other ways to find the measuring position of a laser-Doppler anemometer relative to a wall. One such method and its application to the study of the turbulent near wall flow in a pipe is described in this paper.

Notes: Abstract  To analyze differences in flower longevity and ethylene sensitivity, we isolated Rosa hybrida gene fragments with sequence similarity to the Arabidopsis thaliana ethylene receptor gene-family. A rose gene (RhETR1) highly similar to AtERS1 had been previously sequenced. Here, we report the isolation of three additional partial rose genes (RhETR2–4) belonging to different sub-groups of ethylene receptor genes. RhETR2 clusters with AtETR1, RhETR4 with AtERS1 and RhETR1, whereas RhETR3 shows high sequence similarity to AtETR2 and AtERS2. Expression analysis of RhETR2 and RhETR3 revealed that they are differentially expressed. RhETR2 is expressed at a constitutive level throughout flower development whereas RhETR3 expression increases in senescing flowers of the cultivar Bronze which has a short floral life while it remains at low levels in the long-lasting flowers of the cultivar Vanilla. Expression of both genes was increased by ABA and ethylene treatment, but transcript abundance differed between rose cultivars with different postharvest performance. These results indicate that differences in flower life among rose cultivars could be due to differences in receptor levels.

Notes: Summary In a double-blind, randomised, cross-over trial clofibrate and a combination of polyenyl phosphatidyl choline (PPC) plus clofibrate were tested in 67 patients with hyperlipoproteinemia. Each treatment lasted for 4 weeks and was separated by a 4 week placebo period. The daily doses were clofibrate 1.2 g and PPC 1.8 g + clofibrate 1.2 g, respectively. The results revealed that polypenyl phosphatidyl choline prevented the elevation of LDL-cholesterol induced by clofibrate treatment, and that the lipid-lowering potency of the combination did not differ significantly from that of clofibrate. Since elevation of LDL-cholesterol is considered to increase the risk of coronary heart disease, the combination appears to offer a therapeutic advantage. Despite the significance of this clinical observation, a final decision may only be obtained from a prospective, long term investigation in patients with coronary heart disease and hyperlipoproteinemia.

Notes: Abstract Two fluorescent dyes were incorporated into sol-gel derived SiO2 matrices. The dye was added to SiO2 precursors of different degrees of pre-condensation and the spectroscopic properties of the immobilized dye were measured at various aging and drying stages of the resulting gels. The significant influence of the processing parameters on the spectroscopic properties is manifested in the relative intensity of a second red shifted emission band (550–560 nm), which was observed besides the typical coumarin emission band (495 nm). The appearance of this long wavelength emission might be attributed to dye aggregation or to other reactions with the ambient matrix forced by micro porosity phenomena.

Notes: Abstract. We discuss the problem of capturing media streams which occur during a live lecture in class or during a telepresentation. Instead of presenting yet another method or system for capturing the classroom experience, we introduce some informal guidelines and show their importance for such a system. We derive from these guidelines a formal framework for sets of data streams and an application model to handle these sets so that a real-time replay becomes possible. The Authoring on the Fly system is a possible realization of a framework which follows these guidelines. It allows the capture and real-time replay of data streams captured during a (tele)presentation, including audio, video, and whiteboard action streams. This article gives an overview of the different AoF system components for the various phases of the teaching and learning cycle. It comprises an integrated text and graphics editor for the preparation of pages to be loaded by the whiteboard during the presentation phase. The recording component of the system captures various data streams of the live presentation. They are postprocessed by the system so that they become instances of the class of media for whose replay the general application model was developed. From a global point of view, the Authoring on the Fly system allows one to merge three apparently distinct tasks – teaching in class, telepresentation, and multimedia authoring – into one single activity. The system has been used routinely for recording telepresentations over the MBone net and has already led to a large number of multimedia documents which have been integrated automatically into Web-based teaching and learning environments.

Notes: Abstract Magnetic ordering in the hyperfine enhanced nuclear ferromagnet PrNi5 was investigated in external magnetic fields up to 72 mT at temperatures from below the ordering temperature up to about 20 mK. An anisotropy of the magnetization and ac susceptibility was observed for two single crystalline samples having a or c crystallographic axis parallel to the external field. The results show that the nuclear magnetic moments of Pr are ordered in the basal plane of the hexagonal crystal structure of PrNi5.

Notes: The effects of flow on the NMR absorption in the A and B phases of 3He have been studied. While no flow-induced changes in the absorption were seen in the B phase, a variety of phenomena were observed in the A phase. The phenomena include the development of time-dependent satellite peaks, height reductions of the signal, and a splitting of the signal, with a fraction of the signal shifting to lower frequencies. These effects are described and discussed in light of the existing theoretical models. In addition, the NMR shift in the static B-phase liquid confined between 135-Μm-spaced parallel plates has been measured as a function of temperature and the angle between the magnetic field and the plates. These results are compared with previous measurements and are found to be in good agreement. Finally, two effects observed in the static liquid, the disappearance of the B-phase signal under certain conditions and the splitting of the A-phase signal, are described.

Notes: Abstract The effects of a magnetic field on nuclear spin ordering in solid3He have been observed through the influence of the field on the solid entropy. By making use of the Clausius-Clapeyron equation, the3He melting temperature as a function of pressure was determined in several magnetic fields from 0 to 1.2 T from measurements of the latent heat of solidification in a Pomeranchuk cell. The solid entropy as a function of temperature was then calculated from the melting curve slope in each field by again utilizing the Clausius-Clapeyron equation. The solid ordering manifested itself as a substantial reduction in entropy occurring over a narrow temperature interval. A portion of the magnetic phase diagram of solid3He was established by plotting the ordering temperature versus field. In low fields the reduction in entropy occurs over a very narrow temperature interval, and the ordering temperature is depressed by the field. Above about 0.41 T, however, the ordering region is broadened and moves to significantly higher temperatures with increasing fields. The behavior in low fields is tentatively interpreted as a magnetic phase transition from the paramagnetic to an ordered phase, while the effect in higher fields is believed to represent paramagnetic ordering of the nuclear spins by the applied field.
