Notes: A 1 cm2 area in phosphorus-implanted silicon samples is annealed by irradiation of a much smaller 0.002 cm2 area with a single laser pulse. Resistivity of the annealed region is uniform and similar to that measured after thermal annealing. Electrically activated donors did not diffuse into the sample and only slightly towards the sample surface. The process is 100% reproducible. We present evidence that the annealing is not caused by heat. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: [Auszug] Wheat and barley were grown during 1974-75 at the Centre de Investigaciones Agricolas del Noroeste (CIANO) near Ciudad Obregon in north-west Mexico. There was no rain and crops were either flood irrigated frequently (I) or only until 27th January, about 40 d before anthesis, creating a drought (D) ...

Notes: Abstract We have observed spontaneous parametric four-photon scattering in electrolytic solutions (alkali halides and alkaline earth halides in water). The spectral, temporal, and spatial intensity distributions of the scattered light have been measured. Using a Q-switched ruby laser as a pump, and a CuSO4-solution as a filter we observed signal wavelengths in the range from 350–550 nm with a maximum intensity at 480 nm for all of the investigated solutions. This radiation is emitted into a cone with a half-angle of roughly 60 mrad. In comparison to pure water the scattered radiation in electrolytes has a much higher intensity. Most of the experimental results confirm predictions of the theory of spontaneous four-photon scattering.

Notes: Abstract  Self-diffusion coefficients were studied for the highly polar liquid N-methylformamide at pressures up to 200 MPa between the melting pressure curves and 420 K by the spin-echo method. N-Methylformamide exists as a mixture of two conformers in the neat liquid. These conformers have large differences at lower temperatures in their dynamic and structural properties. The self-diffusion coefficient of the cis-conformer being 17% lower than that of the trans-conformer at the same T and p. This is the first observation of such an effect. The experimental study is supported by Monte Carlo (MC) calculations which show that the first neighbors around a cis conformer are arranged differently than in an all trans liquid. The difference leads in the simulations to a much lower dielectric constant for the trans-cis mixture and might also explain the retardation of diffusion for the cis conformer.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Theoretical models for the low-quartz and for the low-cristobalite structure type are derived in which the AB4-tetrahedra have symmetry $$\bar 4$$ 3m and have variable angles of rotation μ. Special values of μ result in structures with higher symmetry than those of the low-quartz structure type (P3221-D 2 6 ) and of the low-cristobalite structure type (P41212-D 4 4 ) respectively. The computation of interatomic distances shows that the considerable rotations of the AB4-tetrahedra as compared with the structures of higher symmetry (which correspond to the atomic arrangements in high-quartz and to the one originally attributed to high-cristobalite, resp.) cannot be explained by steric hindrance. Furthermore, the computation of Madelung constants as a

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The crystal structure of schafarzikite, FeSb2O4,a 0=8.59;c 0=5.91 Å, space groupP 4mbc-D 4h 13 ,Z=4, has been refined. The atomic arrangement agrees essentially with that determined byZemann. The refined structure, using Weissenberg diffractometer data, yielded a finalR value of 0.056. The Fe atoms are surrounded octahedrally by six oxygen atoms, the Sb atoms form with three oxygen atoms a flat trigonal pyramid.
