    Description: The report has examined the claim that grazing incidence telescopes having surfaces described by generalized equations have image characteristics superior to those of the paraboloid-hyperboloid and Wolter-Schwarzschild configurations. With emphasis on specific applications in solar and cosmic X-ray/EUV astronomy, raytracing has shown that in many cases there is no advantage in the polynomial design, and in those cases where advantages are theoretically to be expected, the advantages are outweighed by practical considerations.

    Description: Refinements in vacuum deposition technology have made it possible to produce structures in which two materials are arranged in alternating layers of uniform thickness and as thin as 5 A. Such structures act as Bragg diffractors or 'artificial crystals' for X-rays, as well as they may be regarded as multilayer interference coatings. A dynamical theory is used to show how the properties of layered synthetic microstructures are dependent on the layer materials and thicknesses and how these properties can be tailored to specific applications. Laboratory results at various X-ray wavelengths are presented. In particular, specific X-ray astronomy applications in spectroscopy, imaging, polarimetry and laboratory calibration are discussed.

    Description: The paper describes how a glass strip may be bent to match any curve of large radius of curvature, to a high degree of accuracy, so that it may be used as a glancing incidence X-ray or extreme ultraviolet optical element. The desired match is obtained by applying a suitable combination of end couples and adjusting the cross-sectional moment of inertia along the length of the strip by varying its breadth. Two applications are described; a parabolic reflector for use as a laboratory X-ray collimator for testing mechanical collimators to be used in space instruments, and an elliptical reflector for point-to-point focussing. The latter device has been used for testing gratings in the X-ray and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) regions and for concentrating radiation on the entrance slit of a spectrometer, with a resultant gain in speed and resolution. It is suggested that the technique may have other laboratory and space applications, which are briefly described.

    Description: This paper describes the S056 X-ray instrument which was carried aboard the Skylab Apollo Telescope Mount as part of the solar instrument cluster. The instrument, which was built at the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, consisted of a glancing incidence X-ray telescope to record solar images in the 6-40-A region, together with an X-ray event analyzer to monitor the total solar soft X-ray flux in several wavelength bands. The X-ray telescope used film as a recording medium and thin foil filters to isolate specific wavelength bands. The instrument subsystems are described in detail and typical results presented.

A particular case, that of a parabola for use as a laboratory X-ray collimator, is considered in detail. The analysis predicts that a collimation of one or two arc seconds should be obtainable in practice, with simple and inexpensive apparatus. A prototype collimator to be used for the testing of space payloads using geometric (McGrath) collimators is described and laboratory results presented.

    Description: The sensitometry and film calibration effort for the Skylab/ATM S-056 X-ray telescope is summarized. The apparatus and procedures used are described together with the two types of flight film used, Kodak SO-212 and SO-242. The sensitometry and processing of the flight film are discussed, and the results are presented in the form of the characteristic curves and related data. The use of copy films is also discussed.
